Trying to strike a personal note, Gaddafi prefaced his letter saying, "To our son, his excellency, Mr Barack Hussein Obama. I have said to you before, that even if Libya and the United States of America enter into a war, god forbid, you will always remain a son. Your picture will not be changed."
Defending his decision to attack rebel cities, Gaddafi told Obama, "Al-Qaida is an armed organisation, passing through Algeria, Mauritania and Mali. What would you do if you found them controlling American cities with the power of weapons? What would you do, so I can follow your example."

We live in very bizarre times. It is impossible to imagine where this situation is Libya will end. A few airstrikes won't bring Gaddafi down, he has said he will not go, he will hide behind women and children, he will do anything. Will the UN alliance do anything.

We'll either look like fools as we put our weapons to bed and leave Gaddafi to do what he does, or we will be fools and go in to take him down. This is a mess.

Yes, it is. But I don't know how the world could have stood by and done nothing. He has mustard gas. Will he use it? I don't think he's too worried about the world's approval anymore. Could be he'll do a behind-the-scenes compromise..."I won't use mustard gas, if....."

We may soon have proof that he's a madman.

It might have been better to stay out. If only because I think getting into someone else's Civil War is not a position we want to be in. Didn't go so well in Somalia, as I recall.

hopefully one of his personal guards turn on him and take him out.

Very very tough call. I think he's already proven he's a mad man, Maggie, although he did choose the straighten up, on the world stage anyway, when members of his family were killed and he saw what happened to Saddam.

This is an interesting article about Gaddafi's miltary strength or lack of.
"We know very little, but we know one thing: His military machinery is not so big," says analyst Alessandro Politi.

Yes, but his word means as much as Saddam Hussein's word meant. His cease fire was mighty temporary the other day. That's what Hussein did leading up to the invasion. Their deals aren't worth spit.

I'm not sure that I would call him a madman simply because from what I've seen in interviews with him and what seems to be the case with many leaders like this is that he/they are surrounded by "yes men" who present them an entirely different view of the world than actually exists. It doesn't seem to be that he actually perceives the world in a crazy way because of something in his own mind, but that he has allowed his world view to be provided by people who will tell him what he wants to hear (either because they're afraid or they're just along for the ride until he falls).

Maybe that's why he feels he has so much in common with Obama. :lamo

As CiC, what would you do, Marsha?

Re: Breaking News: 'To my Dear Obama, our son', says Gaddafi, defending attack on reb

As CiC, what would you do, Marsha?

I would have encouraged France to arm the rebels and helped with supplies and ordnance if necessary. This isn't a fight we are going to win.

I would either go in, whole hog, or not at all.

"Go hard, or go home".

You mean we haven't had that proof already, and for many years? Damn, you sure as hell fooled me. LOL.

If he uses mustard gas in the war against his own people it will be one of the last decisions he ever makes. The full force of the US Military will come down on him. I actually wouldn't be surprised if small tactical nuclear weapons weren't used on areas that he has full control over should he decide to make this war go into the next level by using mustard gas. If they aren't used, then I can promise carpet bombing of anything representing his government will commence immediately.

Everything in life is our business.
It time for change, and yes your right we mind everyone else's backyard while we let our own backyard go to the dogs. We have enough of our own problems that need our immediate attention.

Like what? Please specify what needs to be done in "our own backyard" that can't wait until we stop this guy from slaughtering his own citizens?

I've thought about it and I was on the fence at first, but now, I stand with coalition. This man must be stopped.

Why not Europe it's in their region, we need not interfere we are already stretched to thin not to mention constitutional issues that can be brought forth. Interfering in another countries civil war is a very dangerous thing and I believe we have a very good understanding of this. Those who are engaged in the civil war in Libya wish the slaughter to stop then may I suggest that the losing side surrender, this is how wars are won for better or worse.

It would be better if we weren't involved and I do believe we could have done something different from joining a military coalition in this case. Must we be in every coalition? Europe uses Libyan oil, France is variously invested in Libya. Isn't it about time the U.S. stopped being the world's policeman? We could have given support in terms of supplies and ordnance and had nothing to do with the military aspect. I'm sure we would have eventually been dragged in anyway but it would have been good to set a different precedent.

Libya is in Africa, not Europe.

Re: Breaking News: 'To my Dear Obama, our son', says Gaddafi, defending attack on reb

A few airstrikes won't bring Gaddafi down, he has said he will not go, he will hide behind women and children, he will do anything.

Revolutionary leaders are among the most difficult to dislodge from power. They typically have unwavering commitment to their revolution. They see themselves as indispensable to the success and continuation of the revolution.

President Mubarak was not a revolutionary leader. Even as he was an authoritarian ruler, he was an incrementalist. In contrast, the clerical regime in Iran is one example of a revolutionary regime. Col. Gadhafi's is another. Not surprisingly, both regimes have resorted to often massive violence to suppress the legitimate demands of their people. As far as they are concerned, the revolution comes first. If necessary, the people are wholly expendable. That, unfortunately, is the ugly reality of revolutionary leaders and their regimes.
