BERLIN — Berlin's beloved polar bear Knut, who rose to stardom when he was hand-raised by zoo keepers after being rejected by his mother rejected at birth, died on Saturday, a zoo official said.
The world-famous bear died alone in his compound, bear keeper Heiner Kloes told The Associated Press.
"He was by himself in his compound, he was in the water, and then he was dead," said Kloes. "He was not sick, we don't know why he died."

Considering the level of hype at the "knutmania"... the mods cna move it elsewhere if they see fit. It was "breaking news" on the web for a bit.

It is odd to see a story like this given the other stories in the news... but I am sure his caretakers will miss him.

Well at least I know... :roll:

I added the picture, because a picture says a thousand words, I couldn't think of anything more appropriate. But I guess a picture "isn't your own input" and the triangle was too tempting.

That video is great too... It shows his personality.
 
btw... Knut was a major attraction. It would be like the real Shamu dying, but every park names their killer whale Shamu. Lots of kids little German and European kids are probably crying right now..
 
On a side note the Zoo Keeper was commented on having such a nice fur coat.
 
As odd as this may sound, Knut's death hits home pretty hard. I recall learning about him in German class a while back and for some reason this makes it feel like much longer ago than it really was.
