Military's 'sock puppet' software creates fake online identities to spread pro-American propaganda

The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda.

A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world.

My question is will the sock puppets be pro-Amerikan or pro-American??

Yep, couple threads on this. Kane had mentioned it. Bring them on I say. :rolls up sleeves:

Only one of the two exists in reality? The other is a far-right talking point fantasy popular with fans of Glenn Beck.

I have yet to meet the American, left, right, or center, who was not PRO-American. He may be disappointed and critical of government. He may be able to acknowledge the less-than-pround moments in our history. But in the end, he believes in and loves his country.

Yep, read this on Common Dreams last night. This is not good.

I'm not convinced sock puppets could overwhelm the pure passion that drives people to get the news and want tospread it and butt heads about it. I think people who've done this for awhile develop a good BS detector.

Because I researched Barack Obama and was seriously concerned about what he and his pals could do to this country I chose to spend a lot of time on the internet trying to share my concerns. Seems like tens of thousands of people had the same idea. I believe these efforts have resulted in Barack Obama being more transparent than he would have wished. Nobody had to pay me to do this. My husband shares my concerns and he's glad to see me online digging and ranting.

Do you understand that these kinds of activities would be utilized in OTHER COUNTRIES, not directed at U.S. citizens.

True, hzlnut, thanks to Americans who objected to the plan. Now will these stealth drones be shutting down Conservative opposition to Obama's fundamental transformation and supporting the growth of government control over the lives of individuals?

This administration seems more interested in their war at home.

These sockpuppets may turn out to be quite useful, actually.

Damn I been found out. lol

Of course they do this it's not unlike the FBI talking some fool into building a bomb then busting him or her.

I absolutely support this.

Its about time we see signs of our military actually adapting to the internet world we live in. Anything that has our military/defense agencies harnessing current technologies to better do its duties is a good thing in my eyes. The last thing we want to do is slag behind with regards to cyber warfare and this simply tells me we're attempting not to let that happen...or happen more than it already is.

I do actually agree with you. The internet is a powerful weapon, both to organize terror and to commit economic terrorism. I suppose the usual political correctness rules wouldn't apply to who and what these cyber drones pay attention to?

Wellll, in theory.

As far as I know, PR, persuasion, psyops would work as well on us as it would on other countries. So we would have to take their "word" that they wouldn't use it on us. It's even illegal. But I seem to recall a cute young private from the invasion phase in Iraq who was most assuredly NOT "rescued by brave commandos at great risk to life and limb. The least they could do for one of their own, who had fought til her last bullet."

Not even close.

And as the rescue video was taken by the military, and provided by them, it begs the question:
Was the Jessica Lynch fabrication a violation of the law prohibiting the use of psyops or public diplomacy that targets American citizens?

Just thought of this last night. Seemed relevant here.

AFAIK, history is devoid of examples of a power that could be abused not being abused evenually, even when the power was created by good people for good reasons. Nature of the beast, I guess.

(Please don't hurt me):2wave:

And you're so sure of this how? Because the government says so... right?

that's nothing. I'm a military member and i already have at least 5 persona's. one here, another forum, a blog, a magazine site, and my facebook account.

So much tinfoil in this thread that my TV started flickering.

LOLZ If you were to look deeper and closely at Obama's economic, foreign policy, and domestic initiatives (as well as who advises him), you'd see that Obama is center right rather than center left.

His foreign policy is just like GW Bush's foreign policy - which I'll remind you isn't center right, it's NEOCON. Same as these guys:

Not by choice, my friend, not by choice. Do you think Barack Obama whines about Fox News and the Tea Party movement and techy gadgets that allow what he calls "chatter" for nothing? Nope it's not for nothing. He is being forced to abandon his promises to the left.

His policy addresses REALITY. How terrible. It would be so much better to try harder to understand why killers kill and alleviate those conditions so that killers could be transformed into little angels.

Well, take heart, left. Any fool can plainly see he is doing it against his will. Well except the drone part. He seems okay with unmanned drones.

He's also okay with adding more troops to Afghanistan, he's also OK with authorizing another no-fly zone over another Muslim country and taking part in bombing them. You don't seem to recall - but in the early 2001-2003 another President did this same thing and the result was hyperbolic rhetoric from the left - worldwide condemnation, protests in theU.S. Europe and Asia constantly about Bush=Hitler, Bush=Fascist, Bush=Blood for Oil, Bush=Baby Killer... etc.

Now almost the exact same thing happens --- we throw in with the UN, we authorize bombing of a Muslim country who's greatest export is... anyone? OIL.

Not a ****ing peep ... out of the media, with world wide protests, with anything. But you see this is all to save the people of Libya - that's the narrative context cover story. If it was bull**** when G.W. Bush did it, it's bull**** when Obama does it. Anything else from our left of center political friends is the biggest steeming pile of hypocrisy ever seen and should be called out as such. Right now, the only sound is crickets.
