This is good news. The scum in Canada wanted to kill him.

Baby Joseph Flown to U.S. Hospital - Health Care - Fox Nation
The baby who was hours from being pulled off life support at his Canadian hospital has been rescued by the national director of Priests for Life and taken to the U.S. for treatment.

Thirteen-month-old Joseph Maraachli, who is currently kept alive by a respirator and was recently denied a transfer to a Michigan hospital to undergo a tracheotomy, arrived in the U.S. early Monday morning with Fr. Frank Pavone and other Priests for Life staff.

"Priests for Life staff toiled through the night for many nights, working in concert with dozens of people to make this possible," Father Pavone said in a statement. "Now that we have won the battle against the medical bureaucracy in Canada, the real work of saving Baby Joseph can begin."

It will be interesting to see the fallout on Obamacare if this little baby lives.

I find myself truly astonished that the supporters of single payer(Obamacare) ins. actually think this kind of thing is not the inevitable result of government control. Rationing exists in every "industrialized nation" but ours. Fancy that.

Joseph's parents had him discharged from the Canadian hospital where doctors said he had been treated for a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease. The Maraachlis wanted the baby to receive a tracheostomy, a hole cut into his throat in order to install a breathing machine. The Canadian hospital said the invasive procedure was not appropriate in Joseph's case because his disease is fatal.

Now I'm confused about something...

is he having something done that is likely to actually save his life for a considerable amount of time?

Or is he having a painful surgical procedure simply so he can die at home in a few weeks instead of dieing in the hospital now?

The answer to that greatly affects my views on this, and it seems to be having misinformation put out

It's the second one. The baby is already in a vegetative state.

From your own article:
"The boy suffers from a rare, progressive neurological disease which, Canadian doctors say, has left him in a vegetative state beyond recovery. He has been at the Children’s Hospital in London, Ontario, since the fall."

Yeah, the "scum in Canada wanted to kill him" by, umm, not keeping him attached to a machine forever. They pretty much sound like Darfur warlords to me.

I would also like to know this, it is vastly important.

It exists here too, it's just done by a free market instead of a government. For example, the people who are shrieking the loudest about this kid being taken off life support are typically the same people who don't give a **** if poor people in the United States can't afford medical care.

I'd certainly rather have medical care rationed by the effectiveness of the procedure rather than the financial wealth of the patient. Although not perfect, that would be a huge improvement in our health care system.

it appears there is no saving him. he's dying, no matter what.

The latter. Moreover, he is being used as a political pawn to make Canada's (and every other advanced nation except the US) healthcare system look bad.

It's the second one. The baby is already in a vegetative state.

He will live longer and possibly make his death less painful. At least for Mom & Dad, and that's good enough got me.

This does point out what would happen if Obama's I don't care health plan were to go into effect here.

I take offense to you calling the Canadian people scum while you don't even know or care to know the whole ****ing story.

The kid is a vegetable and the doctors were trying to prevent unnecessary suffering. The parents are clinging to nothing.

So have fun trying to score political points over a kid that is already dead, you "scum".

What a hack.

He won't live longer.

Here are the facts, which people like you and jamesrage seem to want to conveniently overlook while you bash universal health care:

1) The kid is a vegetable.
2) Once life support is removed, the kid will be dead soon after.
3) In order for the kid to die at home, he has to have the breathing tube removed, and then they need to give him a tracheotomy because his upper wind pipe has completely collapsed.
4) Tracheotomies cost money, are painful, messy, and often lead to infection, especially in babies who have no immune system.

To summarize: more suffering, waste of medical resources, and a bunch of political hoopla because the parents just want their kid to die at home. No private U.S. hospital would take him because transferring the baby would cost money, and the baby is going to be dead soon. It doesn't matter how much money the parents have. Medical staff are not going to deal with it.

I find it so incredibly ironic that people who are against UHC because it wastes their money and gives hip replacements to terminal cancer patients will succumb to the emotional hysteria of letting a baby that is already a vegetable die instead of spending more money to please the (understandably) emotional parents.

Total hypocrisy. It's people like you who make the health care debate so impossible to navigate with any shred of sanity left afterwards.

He will live longer

By what amount?

and possibly make his death less painful.

Less painful for him? Or for the Parents? Will surgery actually be MORE painful for him than not having it?

That's my issue...it seems the parents are pushing to have painful and wasteful surgery done on their child for nothing but purely selfish reasons of wanting him to die at their home instead. This has nothing to do with the child, who they're pushing to have cut open and made into further discomfort so that he can be taken to a place tha the likely has little recognition of at this stage of development, and everything to do with their own emotions.

Now I respect those emotions and can understand that desire, but the people trying to paint this as doing it for the kid is ridiculous and you can't deny the selfish nature of the action. People are free to act selfish, and sometimes its good to act selfish, but that doesn't change what it is.

I also have no problem if a doctor wishes to do the surgery, nor do I begrudge ones that feels it violates their oath and refuses to do it. Doctors aren't slaves.

This does point out what would happen if Obama's I don't care health plan were to go into effect here.

The same thing could've happened here. No doctor in this country HAS to perform surgery or accept a patient to my knowledge simply because they demand it. You can't walk into a hospital and demand they cut off your arm and the doctor is obligated to do it.

That's so misguided. Truth be told, we treat our beloved pets with more compassion than we treat our loved ones. Possibly less painful? Drug him into unconsciousness and let the poor little baby go in peace. If he's brain dead as they say, he doesn't even need drugs. The parents should hold him their loving arms and send him to the angels. Very sad.

Most of you are forgetting/ignoring the most important part of this issue...

It is not MY decision to make.
It is not YOUR decision to make.
It is not the doctors decision to make.
It is not the insurance companys decision to make.
It is not the governments decision to make.

It is THE PARENTS decision to make.

They should let the child go in peace but that should be decided by the parents and not the government.

If the kid is a vegetable, how could he be suffering? :doh

In this country, that's correct. In Canada, that's incorrect. What's your point?

Probably that Canadian Government should not have that kind of power. There fore that our Government shouldn't have with Obama Care.

They did the same thing with their baby daughter Zina eight years ago - she had a similar condition and died six months after the family took her home.

Poor kid is not the first in the family with this disease and there's no chance of long term survival.

"Baby Joseph" is being used as a political football.

Its the Parents decision that they want the action done.

A Doctor is not a slave. They do not have to perform whatever medical procedure you wish. They can't do stuff to the baby the parents don't want, but they absolutely can refuse to do something they feel is ethically unsound.

If a pregnant woman walked into a doctors office of a devout catholic, has him check the health of the her baby, and then once she's being seen by him demands that he give her an abortion is it not the Doctor's choice to say no?

Look, they found a doctor that would do it and more power to them. And I do agree, I like the fact that we have the choice in this country where a hospital can choose to do this if they wish and the parents can choose to do it if they can afford it or if the hospital will do it for free. That said, I have absolutely no qualms with a hospital saying no or even an insurance company saying no as its an unncessary surgery that is of no overall benefit physically or mentally to the child and is nothing but an action to make the parents feel better. A Doctor is not a slave and an insurance companies purpose is not to assure that a parents feelings aren't hurt.

Yep. I believe personally the decision should be kept with for profit HMO's that have my best interests at heart...

Why?

Yeah...I'm gonna need something more than your assessment of what the government "should" have the power to do, without any explanation or reasoning.

In any case, nothing in the health care reform law gives government the right to deny anyone's medical care, as it is still essentially a private system. If you can find a doctor willing to do it (as long as it's not a procedure that will get the doctor in trouble with the AMA), and you can pay out of pocket (or have insurance that covers it), go for it.
