(CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.
"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).
The temblor, which struck Friday afternoon near the east coast of Japan, killed hundreds of people, caused the formation of 30-foot walls of water that swept across rice fields, engulfed entire towns, dragged houses onto highways, and tossed cars and boats like toys. Some waves reached six miles (10 kilometers) inland in Miyagi Prefecture on Japan's east coast.

Amazing.

In fact, the Pacific "ring of fire" is in the process of absorbing its ocean floor into the earth. The pressure of the continental plates cause thousands of earthquakes every day.

Another interesting stat I heard: the energy produced by this earthquake was equivalent to the energy the entire United States uses in one month.

I saw that on TV once, the US and Asia are moving closer together while the US and Europe are separating.

I wasn't looking for one, either. Obviously this has nothing to do with Obama.

But, you can bet your sweet ass it won't be long before Obama is hailed as a hero for his swift, decisive action in this crisis, compared to Bush's performance after Hurricame Katrina.

Well it doesn't seem like anyone else is discussing the topic, we've got Bush, Obama, Global Warming, hurricane Katrina.

As ridiculous as all of the partisan bickering is here, there are actually people out there on Facebook as well as Twitter who have been posting that Japan somehow deserved this because of Pearl Harbor. I wish I was kidding.

Not a stretch, when you consider that Japan hasn't yet apologized for her war crimes during WW2, nor even admitted that they did anything wrong. They still think they were doing the right thing. If the U.S. had done as much and an event such as this happened here, I doubt there would be very many people appalled by the notion.
 
What's that big dam in China... Yangtze? (SP) river, scientist also predicted it would have a detrimental effect on that region..started with Indonesia...yep I am being nutty.

What we may call what are war crimes was considered standard war like prodecures in that region of the world long before the white man became civilized, not saying..just sayin.
