(Reuters) - Japanese nuclear authorities said that there was a high possibility that nuclear fuel rods at a reactor at Tokyo Electric Power's Daiichi plant may be melting or have melted, Jiji news agency reported.

Experts have said that if the fuel rods have been damaged, it means that it could develop into a breach of the nuclear reactor vessel and the question then becomes one of how strong the containment structure around the vessel is and whether it has been undermined by the earthquake.

A real life "China Syndrome" in action.

Not good at all. Not good in the least.

Oh dear god. This is so frightening. This tragedy could turn into a catastrophe of a magnitude the world has not ever seen. I'm really getting frightened for Japan. This is horrible, simply horrible.

IF the rods are melting or have melted it's a matter of of the structure of the containment. If that is breeched... Chernobyl like leakage. Don't know the threat of an explosion, but with the amount of pressure they've been talking about... that stuff breaks through blows the containment housing apart, it will be a bad. Happen at more then one place and wel... Northern Japan will be uninhabitable for years.

The population density of Japan would make a full-on meltdown devastating. This is... really troubling news.

This puts the West Coast of the US at risk.

I know that there is one Carrier in the area ans another on the way and that they can generate massive amounts of electricity. Whey are they not being used?

It would seem that all that is needed is enough power to to pump water, and we have tons of generators that can do that.

No, actually. The west coast of the USA is perfectly fine, although there were dozens of boats destroyed in Santa Cruz and the entire harbor at Crescent City, CA, was wiped out.

AN explosion was heard and white smoke was reportedly seen at Japan's quake-hit Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant today, Jiji press agency said.

Several workers were reported to be injured in the explosion, and smoke was seen billowing out of the plant.

The Japan Nuclear Safety Agency later said however the explosion was not at the reactor.

Radioactivity at the plant was 20 times over the normal level, and Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission has said it may be experiencing meltdown.

Oh man, this is intense.

If a melt down happens we are in jeopardy for sure according to the sxperts. Keep im mind that in WW-II the Japanese releast balloons with bombs that came her on the prevailing winds which are still the same.

And you are right about the damade here. I have been glued to the news fo over 24 hours.

TEPCO #1 reactor ceiling has collapsed. This is very very bad.

Pray that's not a sign the containment shield is gone

Most news sources I'm reading say it's unrelated to the reactor. The maintenance technology for reactors is complex and in of itself can break down or explode.

Nope the roof collapsing is so very very bad. That outer structure would be the last hope of containment when the pressure breaches the rest of the containment housing. Note the use of WHEN and not IF. This will not end well. :(

The outer is just shell, it's the inner containment that's the important part... and it's cooking like a pressure cooker.

That's not.. a good sign at all.

Oh definitely. Like I was saying, it would be the last hope... now it's gone. Also thinking about what the collapse could have damaged internally, and what else could have been damaged in the explosion. Radiation levels that high outside of the structure is such bad news. This is so sad. :(

People, stay cool. From the Reuters blog:

Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, says "No Chernobyl is possible at a light water reactor. Loss of coolant means a temperature rise, but it also will stop the reaction”

The explosion is most likely to be the hydrogen that is used to cool the plant.

Of course Chernobyl cannot happen here, it's a different kind of plant, the Soviet design was bad from word one. What's more likely is a "China Syndrome" Which is the worst case scenario with this type of design. If the core slags and starts to burn... it melts through the containment shell. The type of explosion and fire would not be the same as Chernobyl, again, different design different scenario.
