8.9 earthquake strikes near Tokyo - Tsunami alert issued

If anyone's up and wants to discuss real time right now, you can get on IRC. If you want to but don't know how, PM me.

Oh crap. Hawaii may be getting a tsunami warning.

Many countries on the Pacific Rim now have a tsunami warning, including countries as far away as Chile and Peru.

Tsunami expected to hit Hawaii in 6.5 hours, New Zealand in 12 hours.

I can't tell you how happy I am to be at 2,300 plus feet above sea level here. They are saying the Tsunami that hit was 13 feet wich means it would go higher with the force of the water.

The pictures of the damage show it to be devastating on a major scale. The fires and people who are stranded in the upper floors of houses and other buildings hoping to be rescued is frightening, and it is going to take hourds if not days to get to them.

Hawaii is expected to be hit about 3:59 AM Hawaii time by the Tsunami. With all the fires they can't get to the devastation will only get worse.

Any one living on the Coast of the Pacific Ocean need to be called to warn them of what may be coming so they can move inland to save their lives. This is no joke they may be at risk.

If you know people who live in these areas you need to call them and warn them because this is a real threat to them. Don't rely on email because it's near midnight and they are likely in bed, so call them now and alert them now.

Better be safe than sorry. They ma give you a bad time for wakng them but if the Tdunami hits they will thank you later.

There are several waves coming becaue ot the aftershocks that top 7.0 so this is a serious threat.

Japan is no stranger to earthquakes. I have colleagues there who are already in contact and they say that people had a very disciplined response. The level of damage remains to be seen though.

I don't appreciate the way the media is sensationalising the dangers of the oncoming tsunamis with fear mongering and dramatic interpretation. The danger is real but the best thing we can do is stay calm and let the preparedness plans kick in to get people to safety zones.

I swear, people are loving this drama way too much.

I just spoke to my friend on FB who is in the Airforce in japan. She said there are aftershocks going off cont. and houses are underwater.

Fortunately both of the people I know who are currently in the Tokyo area have said they're OK. :)

I disagree, this isn't a random shark attack or an outrageous Charlie Sheen quote, it's an imminent disaster for many countries all across the Pacific Rim. The more sensationalizing, the better.

That's not what I mean. People flocking here to say "ZOMMGGGG STUFF UNDERWATER!" and "HAWAII IS IN IMMINENT DANGER OMG!" is not helping anything. Let the authorities do their jobs and wait for the official statements. The sensationalism about it is stupid and disrespectful.

The sky isn't falling. **** happens. Let's wait for more info. I realize Americans enjoy dramatic destruction because it gives them something to watch on t.v. but let's give it a rest.

Its making others aware of whats happening. My cousin is in Japan right now and I called to let my aunt know whats happening over there. If i didnt tell her, she would have never known until 7am. Us talking about it and being aware of the situation has nothing to do with the authorities and their job. Being aware and alert is far from being disrespectful.

Thoughts and Prayers to anyone who has friends or loved ones in Japan**

You know what... I have four friends in Japan, two of whom are in the epicentre and have not made contact with me yet. This situation is very close to me. So kindly go **** yourself. You to come to this thread posting "sendai airport is now underwater!!!!" because this is ENTERTAINMENT and drama for you. But for me, this is LIFE and people I care about could be dead.

SO **** YOU.

What I need right now is for people to be calm and collected. This JUST happened. I am still in the midst of the deafening silence, wondering where people are. So while you are hopping around news channels and living up all the sensationalism bull****, I am still here waiting quietly for a phone to ring.

So again I say **** YOU.

Tsunami warning up for the Philippines - expected to hit in about an hour. Indonesia has about two hours.

I just don't like the sensationalism. I value the direct info, but not the "OMG" factor like Giant Noodle is going on about. People like that love the drama, but don't give two ****s who is involved.

I hope your cousin is safe.

FYI you can view the status of the tsunamis here:

Most distant places like Hawaii have been downgraded to low-moderate severity. No need to panic.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning: “A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii,” the agency said. “Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property.”
Not panicking.... preparing...

No, there isn't. It's going to be there in 6 hours. People will get out and to higher ground, unlike in Japan.

Are you suggesting we should be panicking? How would that help this situation whatsoever?
Relax, no one wants there to be panic. They're just concerned.

One of my friends got a message through via the Canadian embassy. He is safe, but shaken. Apparently the school he teaches at is now under water. He said that following the quake there was almost no time to get to higher ground but that he was already in a tall building. No word on our other friend.

I'm dreading the casualty count.
