Its crap like this why people are starting to despise unions. The only thing an employer owes an employee is wages for the work they do and compensation for any on the job injury or job related injury.

Connecticut Town Ordered to Pay for Union Workers

A Connecticut town must provide their union workers free coffee and milk, according to a ruling from the State Board of Labor Relations.

The board also ordered town leaders to reinstate “Dress Down Fridays” for the union clerical and custodial workers.

The dispute involved the town of Orange and the local chapter of the United Public Service Employees Union.

The board determined the town retaliated against the union members for comments they made at a finance meeting in 2009.

The day after that meeting, First Selectman James Zeloi eliminated the free coffee and milk and the following day ended “Dress Down Friday.” Zeoli told The New Haven Register that he pulled the plug on the coffee to save money and stopped casual Fridays because some employees were abusing the privilege.

“It shows you how crazy state government has become,” Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Chris Healy told Fox News Radio. “You’d almost laugh at it, if it wasn’t so serious in tone.

This is just another black eye on state government.”

I've got some bad news for you. People outside of rabid Hannity and Beck fans aren't starting to hate unions. According to recent polls, a clear majority (60 - 70% depending on the poll) of Americans stand behind unions.

And as far as this story goes, it's a non-issue. You act like the town was ordered to suddenly start giving free coffee to employees. According to your own source the board gave the priviliges back to the union after the board determined that the privilige was unjustly taken away by the town as retaliation for union members making unfavorable comments at a finance meeting.

I'm not a rabid Hannity of Beck fan and I'm not really all that fond of Unions. I think they once served a very valid purpose, but they've grown bloated and corrupt, and the purpose they once served is now served by a lot of other factors. In short, I see them as archaic and no longer necessary.

You know, one could make he argument that from the political, to the economic, to the unions, pretty much every major institution in America is bloated and corrupt.

Wall street, congress, the presidency.

I would say the trouble with some of these unions, speaks to a much larger problem.

The polls are bull**** and polls aren't news.

I don't like polls, and i don't use them as evidence in any argument.

But i do get a good chuckle when people love to for example continually quote Obama polls when they're going down, poll after poll about how Americans are against this or that, and then when a poll comes out that goes against something they like, it's dismissed completely and doesn't matter... :coffeepap

I stand behind the rights of Unions to exist also. Doesn't mean I want them around.

Edit Note: Oh, FYI...I don't even have TV so sorry...not a hannity/beck fan.

Two issues here. Firstly, I think it is ridiculous that the town should have to pay for the unions workers coffee.

Secondly, Fox News was INCREDIBLY dishonest with their reporting. The title of the article gives the impression that something occurred that then made the town be FORCED to pay for this. That is untrue. What happened was that the union said something negative at a financial meeting. The town then acted infantile and retaliated to these comments by taking something away. The story here is more about why the town is paying for this in the first place and why they would be so childish to remove it because of comments.

This is dumb partisan stuff and not what as it appears.

Another great reason to dump Unions, just add this ridiculous ruling to the list, that includes helping to put most States and the Federal Government in the economic dumpster.

As I see it State and Federal Wage and Hour laws, Minimum Wage Laws and OSHA cover all the real important issues.

If you don't like your job, work hard and get promoted or look for one you can live with.

Unions as I see it use Coercion to gain compliance with often unreasonable demands then defend lazy useless workers as we see in most DMV offices.

Name the head of any Union in the United States that is not a MARXIST....just ONE.

The polls are bull**** and polls aren't news.

And if they agreed with your own views you would be touting them as gospel. But they don't so you attack them instead.

As Gomer Pyle used to say "surprise, surprise".

Exactly. This is how both sides work.

Define Marxism. BE SPECIFIC.

Sure. About some FACTS? Even though many union members are conservatives or conservative democrats their leadership always support Marxism without any say from the membership in direct violation of the members 1st Amendment rights. Correct me is I am wrong but the US Constitution and common law holds authority over any Union Constitution or bylaw.

You did not answer my question. I asked you to specifically define Marxism, NOT rant about how much you dislike unions.

Try again. Define Marxism. BE SPECIFIC.

You refused to answer the question. If I say "what's 2+2" and you say, "airplane", YOU are refusing to address the issue... which is YOUR problem. Perhaps it means that you know that if you did, your position would be shown to be stupid. Both dishonest and cowardly on your part.

Unions appeal to the selfish and greedy. YOU get "better pay and benefits" and you don't give a **** what it costs to get it. Gov't going broke? Who cares?? Company run into the ground? Who cares?

Management operates the same way. Give as few benefits and as little pay as possible to maximize profits. Workers don't give a **** about the company? Who cares? Turnover? So what... easier to reduce salaries. Greed and selfishness defines both sides of the issue.

Indeed. Big Business has deep pockets that can crush individual workers. Unions level the playing field.

Anyone who trusts Big Business or Government to always do the right thing is a fool.

Employers owe employees whatever they contract to owe them.

There are very few places I have worked where coffee wasn't provided. I am not sure why this is supposed to be getting my dander up.

And even fewer where the coffee was actually any good, I will bet
