(Reuters) - Gun-control advocates on Thursday called a new Wyoming law that allows residents to carry concealed weapons without a permit a "troublesome trend" in Western states.

Wyoming's Republican Governor Matt Mead on Wednesday signed the permit-free gun bill into law. Beginning July 1, residents who want to pack handguns will no longer have to undergo a criminal background check or show proficiency with a firearm.

I am pleased to see progress on this issue. Bearing arms is a fundamental human right and today the State of Wyoming has taken a major step to recognizing that right and abolishing intrusive measures that would limit it.

I think this is fine for Wyoming. Wyoming is the least populous state, and so doesn't suffer from social issues that more urbanized states, such as California, facee. I also doubt that Wyoming is a major hub for organized crime, which is one reason why some states pass laws on prohibiting ex-cons from purchasing or owning a firearm.

It's Wyoming. I'm not sure why this is even making headlines.

It's the tenth largest and least populated state in the U.S.

Gun control doesn't really seem like much of an issue, considering that aside from the occasional range war, there just isn't much going on there.

We realize it's "fly over" country to many of you lefties.

Gotta wonder how many people looked up Wyoming on wikipedia before posting here. lol (I admit that I did just to see if they were accurate in stating it was the least populated)

South Carolina has a similar measure currently in the legistlative process.

Wha?

I was just stating facts. When you have more Senators than Representatives, you're officially not a huge influence on the rest of the country. With a small population lacking much cultural diversity, it's much easier to get things done. Like passing what would normally be a very controversial bill.

I'm not bashing small populations though. Just look at places like Sweden and Denmark, you can practically eat off the streets there.

you live in NY...just move a little east till you hit New Hampshire.

I've carried concealed for decades, all over the US of A. I'd feel funny being legal.

Well you have the right to keep and bear arms. Thus I believe that both open and concealed carry should be assumed standard. There is no reason to ask the government's permission in order to exercise your rights. That's what it means to have a right.

It's "fly over" country to pretty much everyone but the people who live there. Have you actually been there? It's absurd how bland and desolate that state is.

The idea that you need permission form the government to exercise a constitutional right that explicitly says shall not infringe is abhorrent. Its kind of sad that they need additional laws uphold the constitution. Although I thought Wyoming was on the states was one of the majority of states that did not require a permit/license to own a firearm.

Careful. You're opening yourself up for a conservative to do a pointless partisan snipe at you that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

I've been there. I loved it. There is a stark beauty to the wind-worn hills and plains, let alone the rugged mountains. People may not be abundant, but there's plenty of deer, moose, bear and buffalo. There's room to breathe.

Jackson Hole is beautiful in the springtime. There's a valley near Jackson that is so beautiful it will take your breath away. Seeing a bull-moose with an 8' spread of antlers go up a steep hillside like it was flat ground is something to see with your own eyes.

Not everyone wants to live in a concrete jungle with their fellow man stacked 50 high on top of them, you know.

Perhaps I'm a little biased because I'm from Montana, but Wyoming pales in comparison in my opinion. If you want rugged beauty, come to Montana.

Been there too, it's nice.

A year from now I expect the crime rate to drop. This is a good thing all around.

I only wish California had some Patriotic legislators instead of a bunch of limp wrist, weak kneed Liberals.

Yes, and there are some really pretty areas. Not a lot, but definitely a few. Plus it is really nice. My mother plans to buy a house there in a year or two. She loved it when she lived there.

We have the same law going through our State Congress now. I hope it passes!

Mayor Snorkum understands that a similar law is on the books for the entire United States, but the Mayor also understands that the United States government has refused to obey it's own laws for nearly a century now, and so many people accept this as normal that it's become the rule, not the exception.

You're talking about Wyoming, the state with that gigantic national park in the northwest corner? Not to mention the Grand Tetons National Forest?

Wyoming is one of the cooler states, and it's remained that way because it is so thinly populated.

If you wish desolation, check out Oakland, California, or South Central LA, with it's massive and totally ineffective gun prohibitions.
