Texas Group Will Offer Scholarships To White Men Only

No, fair doesn't exist but if you're a White male you have no one else to blame for any lack of success. It's just you.

You have no one to blame, no matter what your race, creed, color, or national origin is.

I can't wait until China bombs the **** out of Chinese Taipei. That way we won't have to hear Chinese Taipei's little scrawny bitches complaining about how evil China is. See? I can act like a ***** and make ad homs without mentioning names too.

:2bigcry: funny how you knew exactly who they were talking about. i guess the shoe does fit.

You'd have to ask Aunt S, I don't know the details of the study. But when it comes to criminal profiling you're correct that whites constitute the vast majority of those.

So I'm thinking that the results of those studies might not be as depressing as she thought. Maybe they picked blacks for certain crimes because they are the ones most often associated with those crimes. Not racist, just logical thinking maybe?

There is something to be said for there being issues both culturally that are keeping some minorities down, as well as treatment in mainstream news (Missing White Woman syndrome, anybody?).

However when the laws on the books are truly looked at, it kind of does suck to be a white, middle-class male, as the number of laws, policies, procedures etc. which discriminate against you are staggering. Applying for a job? Better hope no one applying is not a white man, otherwise you're screwed. Often times because of how easy it is to sue for perceived discrimination these days.

Going to college? Not unless you scored perfectly on the SATs, have the coveted "My family is rich" scholarship, or are an ethnic minority.

I think the issue she was talking about was that portrayals of crime and race in the media end up distorting our perception of reality.

Some people are easily predictable. You, ludahai and apdst are juts some of those who are too weak, even on the internet, to come out and give names. As my old friend Cherokee would say: If you're a ***** on the internet, you're not hard to find.

I went there this past summer. What makes you think I haven't been there? I was agreeing with you about the cultural thing and suggesting that parenting is a significant factor when it comes to academic success and how hard a child tries in school.

Parenting isn't much of a factor here... parenting is pretty lousy on the whole... kids spend all of their time in school or in cram schools nowadays... it is cultural, but not so much parenting... especially once kids have reached middle school...

Also, as they makeup less than 20% of the population in most areas, they are almost never most often actually associated with those crimes. However, the news media does love a nice story of black people with guns.

Plus inherent racial prejudices still exist in many parts of the country.

Ah but look at 3rd and 4th generation immigrants of almost any origin. Chances are their work ethic is a lot lower than those that moved here. Even among whites there is a lot of entitlement mentality.

I think there is some truth in this statement...

Well personally I think it's parents that teach and infuse their kids with work ethic. When I was in elementary school, my parents were always standing over my shoulder making sure I was getting my work done. By middle school I was handling my own stuff pretty well. And then I went off to college and got a little crazy living on campus and my grades were ****ty, and my parents made me move back home. I'm kind of ashamed to say I still have a lot of growing up to do even at 20, but I know if my parents weren't there to push me at the very beginning I'd be in a very different place right now.

Don't mind his ignorance. Taipei is only the FOURTH largest city in Taiwan, for goodness sake...

What's Hatuey's deal? He'd rather support an autocratic government with a terrible human rights record than a democratic country and an ally?

applying for med school? if you are a white male, you better be at least 20 MCAT points smarter than any black or female applicants.

bolded part-I hate that too. Not just that they're white but they are usually beautiful too. No beautiful black women or ugly white women that I can think of who make the news for more than a day.

We are like that with our kids, but today, most kids spend more time in cram schools than at home... :(

He has a very mistaken view of what China is really like. I have lived there, and we (I presume you speak and read Chinese) know more about the culture than he does...

That hasn't been my experience, but if it's true with yours then man I feel sorry for all those kids. I hate how our public school culture nowadays is so standardized-test-oriented. Teachers end up teaching the test instead of teaching kids the real stuff, and in addition standardized tests aren't a great measure of intelligence, which is too complex and multifaceted to measure accurately using multiple choice.

My mom practices Falun Gong and most of her close friends have either suffered persecution at the hands of the CCP or have relatives that have been victims. The ChiComs are first-rate when it comes to political and religious repression. I speak Mandarin at home but my reading/writing isn't all that hot, it's getting better though because I chat online with my cousins and Taiwanese friends in Chinese so I'm working on that. Do you speak Taiwanese at all? Taiwanese is like the language my parents use when they're saying **** about me behind my back but they're in the same room.

That is exactly what it has become today. There were efforts at reform under the previous administration, but the legislature controlled by the KMT blocked nearly everything that the executive tried to do. And I completely agree with your assessment of the system. I hate the stuff the duck mentality. If there is one meritorious thing to say about the system that does tie in with this thread is that it is completely color/ethnic blind. Your ethnicity does not determine your success on the tests (though admittedtly, your family wealth can affect the quality of your preparation)

I speak a little Taiwanese with my mother-in-law, but my Taiwanese is horrible. I am much better with Mandarin and I speak a little bit of Hakka and even a few words of Atayal as well...

Haha, I actually was referring more to our public schools in the US under No Child Left Behind, is Taiwanese education really on the same path? I now understand why you thought I hadn't been to Taiwan recently, I had thought you were referring to the American public education system. I was actually born here so I'm Grade-A first generation American with a capital A.

I reside in Taiwan. Taiwan is far further down that road than the U.S. is. Many younger educators are trying to get Taiwan off that path, and I am making my own contribution to diversifying the educational experience for my students, but the older teachers and political hacks control the system. It isn't going to change any time soon... :( I hope the U.S. is not going down the same road... In a sense, it DOES reward hard work and is open to all groups, but it discourages creativity and even leaves out the instruction of morals and values... "stuff the duck" is what we call it here...

Bureaucracy and tradition are definitely barriers for educators who want to improve the educational experience, I hope you do your best.
