U.S. Military Repositions Forces in Preparation for Libya Response

Oil companies decide for themselves how much drilling they do.

They base that decision on their revenue stream. Drilling costs money. They can only go up to the limit of their purchasing power, just like any other business.

There are millions of acres with proven reserves where they could drill if they want.

Care to tell us where those areas are?

Government does not determine drilling, just where it can't be done.

That's not true. The government has to issue a drilling permit, before drilling can commence. Ever hear of the drilling moratoriums?

Some of you seem to think if every square inch was opened up to drilling that oil companies would drill with wreckless abandon and drive prices down so you only have to pay 50 cents a gallon. Oil companies set drilling to maximize profits.

Now, you're just being rediculous, because no one said that.

That's why drilling goes up when profits go up.

WASHINGTON — Nearly three-fourths of the 40 million acres of public land currently leased for oil and gas development in the continental United States outside Alaska isn’t producing any oil or gas, federal records show, even as the Bush administration pushes to open more environmentally sensitive public lands for oil and gas development.

An Associated Press computer analysis of Bureau of Land Management records found that 80 percent of federal lands leased for oil and gas production in Wyoming are producing no oil or gas. Neither are 83 percent of the leased acres in Montana, 77 percent in Utah, 71 percent in Colorado, 36 percent in New Mexico and 99 percent in Nevada.

Thats just public land. There are millions more acres of private land that could be developed.

The Gulf moratorium has been lifted. After BP do you really think it should have been business as usual? There are many places they can drill if they wanted to or had the resources to do so. Pretty much all new rigs under construction are spoken for.

What about the innocent civillians that may be killed in such a strike? I mean you hold US troops responsible, why are you willing to send them to kill in this instance?

A surgical strike to kill him and his close supporters would not kill innocent civilians. It would save lives of innocent civilians.

I have to read up on my history? :lamo

Hers some history for you to read up on.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the likelihood that Ho Chi Minh would win a national election in Vietnam in 1955

Source: Dwight D. Eisenhower, Mandate for Change, 1953-56 (Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Compnay, Inc., 1963), p. 372

I am convinced that the French could not win the war because the internal political situation in Vietnam, weak and confused, badly weakened their military position. I have never talked or corresponded with a person knowledgeable in Indochinese affairs who did not agree that had elections been held as of the time of the fighting, possibly 80 per cent of the population would have voted for the Communist Ho Chi Minh as their leader rather than Chief of State Bao Dai. Indeed, the lack of leadership and drive on the part of Bao Dai was a factor in the feeling prevalent among Vietnamese that they had nothing to fight for. As one Frenchman said to me, "What Vietnam needs is another Syngman Rhee, regardless of all the difficulties the presence of such a personality would entail."

Really? :lamo

As one who once was involved in the "surgical strike" field, I can assure you there is little "Surgical" about a Jdam other than where it goes "Boom"..... Those around quadaffi would have a really bad day. :lamo

You're catching on. Can you understand the correlation between the two?

For one, New Mexico has a drilling moratorium in effect. Two, teh government has to issue drilling permits for that land to be drilled. There's also a minimum acerage per rig and it varies from region to region. Care to show us how many drilling permits have been issued and what the acerage requirements are in this areas?

Those around Quadafi would not be innocent civilians. The CIA are experts at assassination and could minimize colateral damage.

Now you are an expert on predator strikes? You are an expert on everything, aren't you?

A surgical airstrike you mean?

How do you propose we get the team in there?

Didn't we try that once and ended up hitting an aspirin factory?

The apsirin factory was the target

Idiotic US intelligence mistook the chemical residue of degrading glyphosate as chemicals used for producing chemical weapons.

Never ever trust US intelligence, it is full of government paid morons

The same Predator that has been wasting civilians in Pakistan? That Predator?

I have, I knew people on the OT&E of the thing....

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/30/world/asia/30drone.html

KABUL, Afghanistan — The American military on Saturday released a scathing report on the deaths of 23 Afghan civilians, saying that “inaccurate and unprofessional” reporting by Predator drone operators helped lead to an airstrike in February on a group of innocent men, women and children.

A predator is no more accurate than a pilot, it is less accurate than a romad and a compenent pilot, it's still bombs and missiles, they go boom, people have bad days.

Actually, a foriegn agent--a Canadian contact--had given CIA a soil sample that he said he got from the aspirin factory, that contained empta, a component of VX gas.

With GPS accuracy, how is a predator any different?

Predators and Civilians - WSJ.com

each of the strikes in 2009 that are described by the intelligence summary, the report says no women or children were killed. Moreover, we know of planned drone attacks that were aborted when Predator cameras spied their presence
It has a remote pilot that uses a camera to fly it..
Sounds like you want to keep Qhadaffi alive. Predator strike would the best option and leave the fewest casualties.

REMOTE

That's key here. When I was in, I've called off the JDAMS when I noticed civillians getting in my way. What's the difference? oh, don't see em on a 22" lcd.

the whole take quadaffi out with a predator nonsense is silly....
