Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- House Republicans demanded that Senate Democrats accept their plan to cut $4 billion in federal spending while keeping the government open until mid-March or bear responsibility for “actively engineering” a shutdown.

How can the GOP reasonably place the blame for the shutdown on the democrats, when they're the only ones promoting and threatening a shutdown?

This is such a BS defense if they do shut it down...

At least they're not running to Canada. Yet

It's always someone else fault. It's called personal responsibility. :coffeepap

Is there an article somewhere you can link us to? That'd be nice.

Exactly... no accountability from either side, but I have always hated the "you made me do it" defense. Come the f*** on! The GOP are not victims in this situation. They can actively fight for their budget and goals in more ways than just this one... All they are doing is holding the American people at state gunpoint. Everybody did not elect them, so they should work with the elected officials the people also elected. The government shouldn't even have the power to say, we'll govern and do want we want or we do nothing for the American people..

I agree. Completely.

Here's one: Republicans Urge Democrats to Accept $4 Billion Budget Cut - Businessweek

The problem is that the Republican bill calls for an end to earmarks. (Obama has said he will veto any such bill.) Budget cut of $4 billion? That's truly pocket change.

Did Obama not propose 1 trillion in cuts over a decade that was shot down by conservatives? What was wrong with that budget? Conservatives have shown again and again that they aren't able to come forth with a budget any more streamlined than Obama's.

The chances of a shutdown are minimal. But all the attention to the topic is a good thing. The continued growth in spending/deficit/debt is now being widely recognized/accepted as being unsustainable.

Nothing partisan here. Both parties spend a high percentage of their time trying to claim any/all good credit and paint the opposition as evil at any opportunity. Meanwhile diddly squat gets accomplished.

This issue needs to stay in the headlines...

So it's a bluff in your opinion... What happens when the republicans don't get what they want, and don't shut the government down?

Seems like they'll appear they didn't really try anything... being bipartisan, negotiate, offer a bill that could have actually passed... and that they are just full of threats and no action

Obamas budject had tax increases and also contained spending that would raise the deficit at our current rate over the next 10 years.

Sort of depends on how the press decides to spin it. This isn't a "one sided stand-off". The proposed threat by the GOP to not raise the debt ceiling is balanced by the Democrats refusal to cut specific spending.

Both sides have skin in the game. And both sides are playing it for all they can. Regardless how badly some may wish to portray it, the Democrats are not the designated angels in this matchup.....

What's wrong with a tax increase to cancel out the Bush tax cuts? That would be a net of 0.

Obama is the one who extended the Bush Tax cuts also. Also why are we only cutting a trillion dollars after 10 yrs when he is going to spend more then that in this year alone. How does this make sense at all?

Again, he had to extend them because republicans said they would block any legislation until he did. He got strongarmed. Well, I don't think he had to, I would have told the republicans to shove it, but that's just me.

And, while many share your concern, the GOP has not proposed any other plan. In fact, the GOPs only plan so far has been the exact same amount of money over the exact same amount of time. So... looks like we're stuck?

I just don't get this mentality of "Give us tax cuts! Why is there a deficit?!?"

Bringing taxes back to their original levels would reduce the budget shortfall by $250 Billion in the short term. But god forbid the american people have to pay for what they voted for.

Didn't realize taxes had "original levels"....

Sorry, back to their pre-Bush Tax Cut levels. Especially if this were to be combined with eliminating loop-holes, the savings could be closer to $400 billion in the short term.

The only ones threatening or talking about s shut down are Democrats. They refuse to make serious meaningful cuts.

It is sort of silly when we (on either side of the aisle) suggest "if just change this variable, we will get this result". It gets even better when the claim is to know what the result will be in 10 years.

Our economy and money supply and saving/spending behaviors are all complex and interwoven. If tax rates get raised (or lowered) we can be pretty sure that "something" will happen. But trying to make linear projections, particularly those ones over a 10 year period, are a little dicey at best.....

Obama is the biggest spender of any country in the history of the world and the country is going bankrupt because of it.
On the other side we have the Republicans who were elected to cut spending & can only come up with a pathetic 60 billion dollars when we are trillions in debt.

Honestly in the last 2 years where has all this spending got us? High unemployment.......Inflation, strife between the parties and the country is slowly falling economically backward backward.

If you dont run your own fiscal situation like this than how can we allow our government too?

I hope you who support all this can live with yourselfs when someday your children & grandchildren are paying for all this stupidity when it appears to have accomplished nothing except make us broke, there lifestyle will certainly not be anywhere as good as yours was.

Great sources! If I wanted rhetoric I could turn on Glenn Beck. I mean seriously, is any of that fact? Is it all adjusted for inflation? Does it take into account the financial crisis that had conservative and liberal support for bailouts?
