Federal agents arrested a Saudi student in Texas and charged him with attempting to construct improvised explosives and compiling a list of possible targets, including the home of former President George W. Bush.

Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari is shown in this undated photo
made available by the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office on
Thursday.

Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, 20 years old, is charged in a federal criminal complaint with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Mr. Aldawsari is in the U.S. on a 2008 student visa and is enrolled at South Plains College, near Lubbock, Texas.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have scrambled in recent weeks to determine whether Mr. Aldawsari has links to international terror groups and have found none, according to U.S. officials.

The FBI alleges that electronic surveillance and searches of Mr. Aldawsari's apartment turned up Internet blog postings and a personal journal that expressed his desire for jihad and martyrdom.

He was trying to buy Tri-Nitro-Phenol, and sulfuric acid and according to other news story's, emailed himself notes on how to create the bombs, possible targets like damns, water treatment plants, nuclear plants.

Here's the sealed affidavit which outlines pretty much everything.

Werent some of the 9-11 terrorists here on student visa's as well? ......and we still are letting Jihadis in?

I say its time to pull the plug on student visas from some of these muslim countries or at the very least cut them way back with very
rigorous background checks.

Apparently the powers that be will wait until theres another mass killing before they act, but considering this president maybe not even then.

Guy's kindof a joke, like he was trying to get caught... emailing himself lists of targets? Calling chemical supply companies and likely attempting to order with his own information.

I never understand that... they do such obvious things... send emails to themselves, write down their plots in journals. I mean, WTF?? Not that I'm complaining... it's just they have a rash of really stupid mofo's. I guess all the smart one's martyred themselves already and they're down to the bottom of the barrel.

I guess, man. Either that or he wants to go to Guantanamo and be a martyr. Giving your info to a company that only produces chemicals for large businesses etc. Seriously, he just needed to pile up some cash, order from a corrupt company overseas with everything he needed, get a crate delivered in a shipping container, Hell, I make a better terrorist than this guy...

You act like Oswald was some kind of rocket scientist. He was purdy successful.

Charles Whitman was a screwball and he scored numerous hits, in Austin.

So, why is there is propensity for some people--mostly Libbos--to blow these clowns off?

Wait... wait...

So its easy to be a terrorist... because idiots have done it in the past.
Meaning these 'moron' terrorists are just as serious.
Or is it that enforcement and investigation sucks?

The implications of what you say fire in many different conflicting directions and as far as I've known you you seem to self refute in many ways.

Why do you give a crap if I blow a clown off for getting caught?

And did they have the patriot act back then?

Reactionary leftists and some libertarians do, but which liberals have done so?

I'm not willing to speculate about this right now. The feds thought he was the real deal, so they charged him. Let's wait until we see evidence presented at trial before we either string him up or presume he must be innocent based upon his country of origin. Sometimes we just can't automatically react to the party platform without, you know, rational thought. :)

Ok, we'll hold a trial, then we'll string him up....;)

A North Carolina chemical supply company reported Mr. Aldawsari to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Feb. 1, citing a suspicious order, the complaint said. Officials said that set off a fast-moving investigation involving hundreds of agents, prosecutors and analysts.

Many thank yous to that company in Carolina!

So, he got caught pretty much on purpose then? Did he just want his name in the papers?

What I want to know is how the FBI obtained the emails he sent to himself.

Is any web mail accessible to the FBI? Does anyone know?

They get a warrant once theyve made a case and collect it as evidence afterwards. Unless the NSA presents something they need material/bureaucratic/or professional assistance with most likely. If the next 9/11 were being planned by email they would be likely to catch on.

'Something doesn't add up' about most of the clown terrorists they find. Early on it was a black club with palestinian sympathies and anti-zionist rhetoric ordering immediately threatening things like steel toed boots, etc. Generally the FBI seems to dupe people into fake terror connections to only arrest them at a legally opportune moment. I don't know much about it. Terrorists need to go, but it smells of entrapment to me at times.

What constitutes a weapon of mass destruction these days? It didn't seem like he was constructing chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons. And what he could "make" (yeah right, this guy would have just blown himself up trying it seems) couldn't do a relatively large amount of damage. Certainly not taking out any dams. They'd probably call those little two-liter pressure bombs you used to make as a kid (2-liter bottle, some Drano and some Al foil) "weapons of mass destruction" these days.

Not sure probably some newfangled technicality to make terror convictions more 'punishful'. A WMD? I don't know if he was making something that could kill 1000-2000 people with some sort of chemical he released... ostensibly, yes, a WMD. Mebbeh the FBI knoez sumpting we downtz?

I heard on CNN today that the initial tip on this guy came from a delivery company that had a very unusual amount of a very unique chemical to deliver to his home. They called authorities, and the investigation got under way.

Just re reading through the thread, and I can't help but wonder, some won't be happy until another attack on this country happens, and innocent civilians die.

Shouldn't we be questioning why it is that Ali bin [anything] is allowed at this time to obtain a visa to this country out of SA in the first place? And why is it that it takes a tip to "start an investigation" shouldn't this guy have already been under scrutiny?

How the **** did you come to that conclusion?

Are you really so partisan that you think people who disagree with you politically actively want Americans to be hurt or killed?

Essentially, you promote mass profiling. Is that legal?

Please, do tell what has been said to make you jkump to such a serious accusation. The baiting seems blatant enough.
