Fear, shock in Christchurch after quake | The Australian

THOUSANDS of shocked people are wandering rubble-strewn Christchurch today, many searching for loved ones and trying to reach trapped people, after a major earthquake threw the city into chaos.

Screams rang out across the southern New Zealand city's main square as parts of Christchurch Cathedral toppled to the ground, while TV footage showed onlookers clinging to each other and others bleeding and limping.

This is awful, 65 people are confirmed dead, and the city is in tatters, hundreds of people are trapped in collapsed buildings. This quake was a 6.3 and struck only 5km's below the surface, toppling buildings that were already weakened by a 7.0 quake that struck in September. If you're the praying type, spare a few for the people of Christchurch and surrounds, and if you're not give it a go anyway.

I just read about this. OMG, what a horrible disaster. My thoughts are with the people who have been affected by this terrible, distructive aftershock. Absolutely gut-wrenching.

I know the fear that comes in an earthquake having been through hundreds growing up in California and having lived for three years just over five miles from the San Andreas fault.

I thought I was doing myself a favor by moving to a new location that is 15 miles from it but it turns out I am now just 2 miles from the San Jacinto Fault and in the last year have been shaken pretty good a couple of times.

I was getting out of bed to get ready for work when the he 1971 San Fernando earthquake hit. I was in El Cajon CA. at the time and it sat me back down on the bed and scared the hell out of me. It was a 6.6 as I recall.

I pray for those in Christchurch.

I can't wait to hear the nuts claim they brought it on themselves somehow because of some political thing or they'll blame it on the Country being friendly to president Bush.

That is terrible. I was in Christchurch a few year ago and stayed with a family there. I am going to email them and see if they are okay.

I know a guy who lives in Christchurch. I pray that the city would have a speedy recovery. My sympathies to the families who have lost loved ones.

My company has offices in Christchurch. They've been shut down until further notice. So far, no word on company casualties.

My cousin is on exchange program at the university of canterbury there...
Luckily, she isn't hurt, but university operations have been cut off and power isn't available :(

The video from Christchurch is horrific. Multi-story office buildings collapsed, their gorgeous cathedral in ruins... so many dead and missing. A catastrophe. :(

The death toll has risen to 75, and there are over 300 people still missing. :(

This quake was so bad it broke a few million tons of ice off of a glacier 150 km's away.

Seriously? That many?? I did not know that. :( The glacier thing is a shock as well. I can't believe a 6.3 quake could cause such horrific damage.

It was only 5km's below the surface, so that actual force of the quake was much higher on the surface than the 7.0 one they had last year.
