Supporters of legislation to reduce public employee union bargaining power and benefits in Wisconsin were far outnumbered by opponents on Saturday, as the two sides shouted competing slogans under clear skies. …

One thing you have to say is that the people of Wisconsin and their guests are a peaceful, orderly lot.

I don't see why being outnumbered one way or the other should matter. Not arguing who's right or wrong, but certainly crowd size isn't a factor in who's right or wrong. Seems kind of pointless to have pointed it out. No pun intended.

Having a state police enforced neutral zone between them is a big help.

I dont see the point in the outnumbered movement here. You have to remember most people have to work on saturdays. I understand teachers and their unions can take the time off whenever and are even OFF on saturdays but in most instances, the general public MUST work in order to feed their families and pay their bills...we dont get "free days"

Anyone who knows anything about economics knows that no Government like no individual can spend wildly and have expenditures exceed spending without maaking some drastic cuts at some point.

These cuts will hurt and they need to be spread through out the budgets State and Federal.

I heard a teacher on the news claim this was for the children becuase without Unions we will no longer have weekends off, BAH, BLAH, BLAH, Bovine Scatology.

All the cuts will do is put Liberal wasteful spending under control and it's up to the Majority of Americans to make sure it happens in order to save us from more Obama style waste like the whole stimulus BS that had lillte and or no real effect.

They could have given every man woman and child enough money to spend rather than bail outs and the resulting spending would have been a great recovery.

This forum has a history of proclaiming that bigger rallies mean longer streams in a pissing contest. (example, threads comparing the beck rally vs the colbert/stewart rally). Ultimately however, such a comparison is really meaningless.

Actually they can't miss work to protest, however many were getting "doctors" excuses at the rally. Don't know if they were real doctors but they were giving excuses with only a name a birthday for the days missed.

Lots of people can get time off whenever. Its called vacation.

So, all those Egyptians in Tahrir square didn't mean ****?

Most people, who have real jobs, have to schedual their vacation.

They did, because they had the numbers to force change, but it does not affect the rightness or wrongness of their position.

Interesting. I have a real job and I can go "boss I want to take vacation tomorrow" and he will go "ok"

In fact, I have.

They took sick days...Most Americans cant afford to use their sick days for protest. We have to use them when we are actually sick or take care of our kids when they get sick. I am sure they are getting fake doctor excuses..hell I did when I was in high school.

Got a source for this?

I admire the protesters on both sides for maintaining an orderly event.

If this is true, than those doctors should be reprimanded and perhaps lose their licenses for fraud.

What do you believe the teachers should get since they are using the "fake notes?" Doctors should lose their job but the teachers should get away with it?

Please tell me where I posted stating that the teachers should get away with it.

There is nothing that will bring out the worthless more, than to try and take their freebies away.

Me too. In the private sector. Teachers aren't normally able to do this, however, due to the nature of teaching. But I support their doing it in this case.

I asked what should be done...I didn't state YOU would let them get away it. I was simply a question

Honestly I am divided on the issue. While on one hand, what they are doing is criminal, sometimes civil disobedience is required for justice. Come to think of it, this reasoning may apply to the doctors as well, so I may reverse my earlier statement. I need to think on it some more.

I am all for protest if you truly believe in the matter. But to lie or use fake excuses and get someone to forge one for you isnt very tactful. What is this showing the youth? Lie and you may be what you want?

The problem is that there are those who will try to unduly punish the teachers for ideological reasons over and above a normal day of not showing up, which means that they would be in the right to attempt to protect themselves.

Sure protect themselves..Take a vacation day. But do NOT lie about it. If you truly believe in your cause, stand up for it but honestly.

I was not under the impression that teachers get vacation days with summer and all.
