SCRANTON, Pa. – A former juvenile court judge who sent thousands of children to detention centers was convicted Friday of racketeering for taking a $1 million kickback from the builder of the for-profit lockups, in what prosecutors said was a "kids for cash" scheme that ranks among the biggest courtroom frauds in U.S. history.

Former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella, 61, left the bench in disgrace two years ago after he and a second judge, Michael Conahan, were accused of using juvenile delinquents as pawns in a plot to get rich. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has dismissed 4,000 juvenile convictions issued by Ciavarella, saying he sentenced young offenders without regard for their constitutional rights.

Federal prosecutors accused Ciavarella and Conahan of taking more than $2 million in bribes from the builder of the PA Child Care and Western PA Child Care detention centers and extorting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the facilities' co-owner.

A federal jury in Scranton convicted Ciavarella of 12 counts, including racketeering, money laundering and conspiracy, but acquitted him of 27 counts, including extortion. He is likely to get a prison sentence of more than 12 years, according to prosecutors — who revealed after the verdicts that a reputed mob boss turned informant helped them make their case. ...

Conservative or liberal judge do you suppose?

This was a plot on an episode of Law and Order a while back. Is it life imitating art, or the other way around.

( hope they throw all the books at this scum bag.

Brilliant episode of SVU that was. I remember it well.

I've been following this case because I can't imagine the undeserved trauma these kids went through because of this greedy, corrupt prick. I hope he spends decades behind bars, and that the sting of a thousand civil lawsuits eats every last penny of his ill-gotten gains.

Seriously? We couldn't even make it past one post without getting partisan? How about greedy, asshole judge for starters? If you were to describe this guy, his politcal lean is far from the top of my concerns.

How many of thos brats were really guilty?

Good point...Guilty until proven innocent. If ONE was innocent it was an abhorration.

Just like the not-for-profit justice system, it happens sometimes.

Malfeasance is the worst crime possible, second only to outright treason. Anyone convicted of abusing the trust of the people deserves to be put to death in the most painful ways imaginable. A small fine and a few paltry years spent in a comfortable jail cell is far too good for anyone that abuses their authority and greases the slide from mischievous child to fully fledged criminal.

Put him in jail with the people who put in jail.

Fraud, money laundering, tax evasion . . . holy crap - what a scum. Seems like this 'cash for kids' issue is just one small thing in his overall scummy layer.

I like that ;).... if implemented, it would also be a nice form of term limit, as every two years we would be looking for another 435 men/women to run congress another new 100 senators to appoint.

If those Juveniles did someone to warrant incarceration then they should be incarcerated. So I do not know if those kids were needlessly jailed. The money he got may have just influenced whether or not he may have shown leniency, not whether or not the kids were guilty of the crimes they were accused of. Whether or not this money influenced him to not show mercy or to frame kids for crimes he should be severely punished. Criminals should be punished because they deserve it not because the judge is getting extra money to punish them.

But only after being found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by an independent and impartial judge.

Hey, give the guy a break. We needed someone in here to balance out the Prof.

They should be broken on the rack. Their political affiliation won't matter while they're howling in agony.
