:(

Sad news, hope the death toll is low.

I blame the continuing problems here and Iraq on the rules of engagement and politicians making decisions that should be left to the Military.

This is another case of political correctness run a muck.

We won WW II fighting around the world in every climate on earth under every condition with draftees who were rushed into battle with not much training, and they kissed ass.

The bid difference was our political leaders stayed the hell out of the battle plans and concentrated on making sure sure our troops got the supplies they needed.

First President Bush and now Obama think they know what to do and how to do it and neither one knows one damn thing about how to win.

The Military needs a reasonable objective what ever they need to win and then be left to achieve the final goals.

A piece of spaghetti or a military unit can only be led from the front end.

Politicians are at the dumb-ass back end.

I believe that started in Vietnam.

What's funny is that all of the wars we fought recently were lost only on capital hill. If we could just let our troops do what they are trained to do we would win much quicker and more cheaply.

It is not our job to nation build. If a nation threatens us, we flatten that nation. It's up to them to rebuild themselves. If you get into a fight and you kick the other guys ass, it's not your job to heal him up.

While I dont disagree.. in fact the opposite.. we must also accept that times have changed. During WW2 and Korea it took time to get back reports of troop deaths and the media was controlled by the military. Now days that is very much different and the people cant stomach the idea of having thousands of troop deaths a week in an all out assault against a country that most dont know where is.

I have no doubt that the US/NATO could win militarily in Afghanistan but the cost would be huge in human lives on both sides and would require near genocide. You would simply have to kill or brainwash every single radical there is in the country and that is a lot of people. On top of that you would have to get rid of any present political regime and replace it with a system you have written and approved (like Germany and Japan and in part Korea). Following the victory you would have to stay in place with a puppet government for a number of years and then hope democracy would take hold.. but there is one huge difference between Germany/Japan/Korea vs Afghanistan... education standards. People with no education are so much easier to manipulate.. that is why the radicals have gained a foothold in the first place.
