If this man is indeed a consular official, he does have diplomatic immunity and the most the Pakistani government can legally do is declare him persona non grata (which is what I am sure the end result of this case will be). Remanding him to prison for two weeks is a violation of international law.
But then again, as the U.S. violates international law when it comes to allowing consular officials to have contact with their nationals in detainment, I suppose the U.S. really does not have that much right to squak about this... Thanks Texas for that....
LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) – Pakistan on Friday sent a US official to jail on judicial remand, pending further murder investigations and a legal tussle over diplomatic immunity in a case that has inflamed ties with Washington.
