Govt asked to explain failure to stop fatwa

The High Court yesterday ordered district officials in Shariatpur to explain why they failed to protect 14-year-old rape victim Hena from being whipped to death as per a fatwa on Monday.

The deputy commissioner, the superintendent of police of Shariatpur and the thana nirbahi officer of Naria upazila -- where the incident took place--will have to report to the HC in 15 days how it happened although the court (HC) had eight months ago declared fatwa illegal and a punishable offence.

The reports said Hena was raped by her 40-year-old relative Mahbub on Sunday. Next day, a fatwa was announced at a village arbitration that she must be given 100 lashes. She fell unconscious after nearly 80 lashes.

Fatally injured Hena was rushed to Naria health complex where she succumbed to her injuries.

I simply do not understand how this can happen. Im TRYING to find a "unique spin" for the sake of dialogue. Im struggling.

For the sake of argument, we recently saw a 6 month old infant with multiple instances of abuse. Evil bastards are every where. But this goes beyond the rape. Help.

That about sums it up. It's hard to imagine there are still societies that would place the blame for being raped on the rape victim, let alone punish her by whipping her to death.

I bet the actual perp gets off scott-free too...And the freaks who ordered and carried out the fatwa.

WTF. Mahbub, and the people who issues and carried out this insanity should be whipped with 100 lashes as well for their ignorant stupidity.

I heard a stat today, that explained that only 2% of criminal perps in Islamic courts are convicted.

For the record...Its not like I dont realize that in America and every country we have scumbags that harm children. The 40 year old man should go straight to hell just like all child molesters and rapists. But...the decision of a court...that the 14 year old child should be whipped 100 times...because...why. Thats the part I just cant get my brain around. And Im not being rhetorical. Im truly trying to comprehend the justification in their minds. I dont want anyone to excuse it. I dont want anyone to own it. I wont flame anyone that can explain it. I dont want to see anyone else flame them and I am asking nicely for others to not (RoP...this means you too).

Does it really matter? I mean, any society that would place blame on the victim rather than the perp in instances like this has some real evil problems.

She didn't fight hard enough, obviously if she DIDN'T want the sex, she would have stopped him.

It has to do with a traditional honor system. Her punishment has more to do with the perceived loss of honor than justice being served against the actual aggressor. Definitely hard for a Wersterner to wrap one's head around -- I really don't get it either, but similar cases are known.

Pregnant as a result of rape, she was killed by her family - World - smh.com.au

Maybe it's because, all things aside, they just gotta punish the woman, because they hold the twisted perception that she brought it on herself. :shrug:
 
I find it VERY strange that not a single liberal has said ANYTHING against this type of behavior. Normally, the replies on these threads is pretty even, but damn, everyone who has replied up to now is either "conservative" or "very conservative." Not even an independent around these parts thinks this is bad?

3.5 hours this thread has been up on this board and not a single liberal has spoken out against this behavior? I promise if this had been an Obama bashing thread, 3 pages of liberal replies would have filled it already.

Why should they say anything? What is there to say? Is there something controversial about this, that you desperately need to know where liberals stand on it?

These are subhumans. They come from a subhuman culture. They deserve to be burned off the face of the planet.

For all of our supposed "moral outrage", we're not going to do anything about it. You're not going to do anything about it, our government's not going to do anything about it, and nobody is going to demand that our government do something about it. If nobody is going to do anything about it and we're all comfortable with the fact, then what is the point of saying anything about it?

My point was rather obvious. This is not something that can be extrapolated out to Islam as a whole. I guess I should've expected that to go over your head.

You're "point" about Islam as a whole is a Strawman. No one is claiming this happens in all of Islam.

It's because there are still cultures in the world that consider females as property... disposable property at that. She basically "allowed" herself to be raped by a married man, so in that culture she deserves death on two fronts: First, because she was no longer pure and therefore a dishonor to her family; second, because the fact that the man who raped her was married meant that she committed adultry.

The brutality of the human species never fails to astound and devastate me.
