US agrees to tell Russia Britain's nuclear secrets

...On top of the fact that I don't put that much credence in any arms treaty we do sign with the Russians anyway. Well, at least the Russians in charge right now. Definitely not a good reason to sell out on the Brits...not that I can't think of any good reason to do such a thing in the first place.

Giving the Russians the serial numbers of the Trident SLBMs sold to Britain tells the Russians the exact size of the British nuclear force.

Potentially you are incorrect. Giving serial numbers allows the Russians to know what type of missile, but not how many. For example, I can give you the serial number of an apple at a Shoprite, does that tell you how many apples Shoprite has?

If I am the leader of Great Britain, I withdraw my embassy staff & suspend relations with the US until this Joke of a president is deposed in the next election. This is beyond idiotic........ Not only has Huessein Obama cast off Israel & Egypt as allies, he's now kicked the Brits to the curb as well. Honestly if this move (amoung many bad ones) doesnt convince you Liberals & drones who voted for him that this guy is in way over his head then almost nothing will.

To give away your best friends nuclear secrets without there permission is a big time backstabbing and its hard to believe even Obama would make such a move, but here it is, this guy just never seems to stop horrifying people to just how far he'll go.

Who cares if they know how many Britain has

the russians

A series of classified messages sent to Washington by US negotiators show how information on Britain’s nuclear capability was crucial to securing Russia’s support for the “New START” deal.

hello

When is the right going to stop looking at Russia as someone we need to defeat?

ask the brits

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.

I'll have to wait for the British reaction to weight the cost benefit analysis.

you have to wait?

LOL!

for the reaction of our most reliable ally?

to their being deceived and bargained away with no say?

go for it, take your time

The Cold War is over, why does anyone seriously think a Russian nuclear strike is a threat anymore?

different topic, same theme:

"What was our plan for transition for our friend? Did we ever talk to him about it, encourage him? That's my view; character and planning. I feel shame about this. I feel ashamed as an American, the way we're doing this. I know he has the change. I know we're for democracy, but the way we've handled it is not the way a friend handles the matter. We're not handling it the way Americans should handle matters like this. I don't feel right about it. And Barack Obama, as much I support him in many ways, there is a transactional quality to the guy that is chilling. I believe in relationships. I think we all do. Relationship politics is what we were brought up with in this country. You treat your friends a certain way. You're loyal to them. And When they're wrong, you try to be with them, you try to stick with them."

Nations maintain military secrets so that their enemies don't know them. Let me paraphrase Sun Tzu: "Know your enemy and know yourself and you need not fear the outcome of a hundred battles." That is the same reason the Chinese military is not transparent.

We did a lot worse to the British in '54 over the Suez crisis and it didn't get that ugly. It is possible that nobody will get terribly worked up over this incident. The emotional feeling of betrayal is certainly their, but there isn't any actual damage from the information. If the British say "those lousy American's are a bunch of lying weasels, the next time they start an idiotic war they can go it alone", that would end up being positive in the long run. That said, Obama was still an idiot for authorizing this. The sensible thing to do would be negotiate a fair exchange for the information, not stab your ally in the back and then get your bad behavior aired to the world.

I'm going to take the unusual step of siding with my conservative colleagues.

If this turns out to be true, **** Barack Obama.

Right or wrong our boys have died alongside yours in Iraq and Afghanistan, we committed to help you, and now Obama has turned around and screwed us.

I am half British, and I will not stand for this crap.

I thought we were allies man, this ain't cool. (this obviously not directed at you).

My response was to the idea that this will somehow get people killed or whatever bull**** he was spouting.

Because as the last 100 years have taught us, allies never go to war, and countries at peace stay at peace and we can predict the future!

Vicchio, the idea that the United Kingdom and the United States could go to war, is one of the most rediculous things I have ever heard.

Yeah I ain't happy about all this, but the UK ain't going to war with the US.

I have a hard time believing Obama or his staff would jeopardize a 70 year relationship with the U.K., without the U.K.'s knowing it.

Same here. I feel there's more to this story than just "the british had no idea about this".

Obama should not have authorized giving the Russians ANY information about missiles that do not belong to the US.

However, I'm not really sure what giving them serial numbers will do. So they have a better idea of how many Trident missiles the UK 'might' have. How does that help Russia?

Yeah, they'll know Britain has *at least* x missles. But they know they have more, just not how many more. Which kind of makes this knowledge not very useful.

They just helped damage our relationship with Britain. Yeah, they are swell I tell ya.

If there's one good thing they did, its that it helped give our diplomatic forces some spotlight. Most of these reports the diplomats put a lot of time into and most get barely a skim. It's nice they get appreciated for once.

I have said from early on that Obama was Anti-American and this proves it.

No one in their right mind would do this and expose out allies to this.

Obama has got to go, the sooner the better.

He did not give the Russians information on our nuclear arsenal. This at best could prove he is anti-British. Of course, it is really quite useless to give them serial numbers. If the Brits lob a few dozen nukes at Russia they are not going to be taking the time to check the serial numbers before they retaliate. Knowing exactly how many there are, we already have a rough idea, also won't do much good if they do not have any defense system capable of getting them all. Plus, who says we have to give them the exact number? If we give them bogus serial numbers or leave out a few dozen nukes the Russians will be none the wiser.

They just helped damage our relationship with Britain. Yeah, they are swell I tell ya.

If our relationship with the Brits is damaged by this don't you think it would be more the fault of the people who passed this information along without telling the British?

They know all they need to know: There's enough nukes around to end civilization as we know it.

No there are not.

Demon, if we really tried to kill civilization with nukes, we could do it now. If we focused the world's energy on building just nukes, in 30-40 years we'd have enough to knock the moon off its orbit and into earth.

astonishing

personally, i'd rather know the truth about what my Government is up to.

the US should be more ashamed than usual. this is the respect that they show their allies? at the end of the day all they have proven is they have no loyalty to anyone. they have no true allies in their minds, just countries that are usefull for a time.

If confirmed as true .... Someone remind me again why British soldiers are still fighting alongside American soldiers?
We British should take this as a final nail in the coffin of this bull**** one sided relationship and a lesson to never trust the US.
It's time for UK to become completely independent with its weapons and outside of US control. They can't be trusted

**** you Obama.
Edit: And for those who say it is no big deal, well. Why doesn't US publish it's nuclear arsenal online or email it to China and we'll call it evens? I didn't think so.
