WASHINGTON — In the first detailed report on the events leading up to the Nov. 5, 2009, shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Thursday blamed both the Pentagon and the FBI for failing to recognize that Army Maj. Nidal Hasan had links to a key al Qaida operative and had become an Islamic extremist before he allegedly opened fire on fellow soldiers, killing 13 and wounding dozens of others.

It was the second report this week that condemned the U.S. Army for failing to recognize clear warnings signs of a troubled soldier that resulted in a major security breach. An internal Army report completed this week found that Army commanders, despite warnings not to, sent Pfc. Bradley Manning to Iraq, where he allegedly downloaded hundreds of thousands of Army reports and diplomatic cables that found their way to the WikiLeaks website. McClatchy first reported on the details of that report last Thursday.

...

In a statement, the FBI said it would study the report and implement changes "as appropriate." It said another study of FBI actions was expected soon from former FBI director William Webster on whether the "corrective actions" the FBI has undertaken are "sufficient."

The Army said it, too, would study the report.

"Our institution is a learning organization and we will continue to make adjustments to improve it," the Army said in a statement.

...
Hasan's military supervisors allowed him to continue in the Army, and to be promoted just six months before the Fort Hood shootings, even though his fellow doctors at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington felt he was a "ticking time bomb." His extreme views were clear to his colleagues at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where he held a fellowship, and were so outraged by one of Hasan's assigned classroom presentations that the instructor halted it after just two minutes, the report said.

With 13 dead and 35 wounded, someone in the Army should be held accountable. The FBI knew this guy so well that one of the agents called another agent and said, "Do you know who that is? That's our boy", when the shooting occurred. Why isn't the FBI and Army holding individuals responsible and accountable is what I want to know.

The new and improved Dr Feelgood approach to all things Muslim is really swell. Better 13 die and we sleep well, then we erroneously ask a lunatic, sensitive questions that may result in his feeling bad about Allah.

I am not sorry to say that this is the result of years of allowing Political Correctness and Tolerance to runamuck as we have allowed a minority of Liberals make too many decisions because we were afraid to call the wackos what they are.

They have just about destroyed this country and I would blame them exclusively but we let it happen.

It's high time we kicked their collective asses out of power at every level they have almost completely destroyed California with the help of RINOS, and many other States are almost as bad off today.

Hell Obama and his minions won't face the facts about Cult of Islam and the Army if forced to go along with it, and it's not all Obama's fault this Radical shooter was in the Army long before the Amateur to charge, so there is plenty of blame to go around.

It's called liberalism.

As General Casey said nothing can be allowed to threaten our diversity. Diversity is more important than self-preservation.

It still remains dumbfounding that a soldier can't carry a weapon on a base.

A SOLDIER? If that's not gun control run amuck, then what is. DC and NYC have the strictest gun laws in the country, and the most shootings. Here's another example of what letting people carry could have prevented.

It's not so much Muslim hate - it's just that the defense appears at times to excuse it. Often people say, "It's not about Islam just like child molestation in the Catholic Church isn't about Christianity" and I get that.

Appears? I suggest it is often a misreading on the part of those who think it appears. :coffeepap

Yep, I excuse the murder of all at Fort Hood...

It wasn't directed at you personally - just regarding the discussion points in general.

The American military and FBI are now so politically correct they are incapable of weeding out an officer who openly proclaims himself to be a jihadi. Nidal Hasan even openly delivered lectures to groups of other officers in which he contended that jihad was the way. And nothing happened.

Heads should roll. But nothing happens even now. Such societies do not have the will to continue existing.

The FBI even knew that Nidal Hasan was in direct contact with the terrorist Anwar al Awlaki. Breathtaking.

Change your name to ALBERT FISH or JOHN WAYNE GACY and we can form a new club.

this fellow asked to be able to leave the service
he was a moslem first and an American second ... not unlike many who are Christian first and American second - God then country
this incident should cause our military to reconsider its approach in dealing with those soldiers who seek CO status to avoid combat
here is an excellent read: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/06/us/06suspect.html

I really don't understand why soldiers can't carry their weapons on base. It's a stupid rule that shows that the military can be just as incompetent as politicians. I would think they should be required to carry their weapons with them.

sort of like the gun haters on the threads blaming the NRA, the Second Amendment, or the demise of the Clinton Gun Ban for the murders in Arizona?

It's illegal, in the military, for a soldier to be a member of the Nazi Party. It should be equally illegal for a soldier to announce his Islamist sympathies.
