WikiLeaks among nominees for Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO - Anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks has been nominated for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian politician behind the proposal said on Wednesday, a day after the deadline for nominations expired.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee accepts nominations for what many consider as the world's top accolade until February 1, although the five panel members have until the end of the month to make their own proposals.

Norwegian parliamentarian Snorre Valen said WikiLeaks was "one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency" in the 21st century.

After watching the 60 Minutes piece on Sun., I'm still on the fence. They claim to do their own vetting of potentially dangerous information that would put people in harms way. No legitimate claims of harm by a leak have come forward, yet.

A natural and obvious follow up to Prez Bam Bam's hard fought win.

A delusional concept.

It was clear when Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize that the nominating group had lost their collective (expletive deleted) minds and this just confirms it.

The Nobel Prize has become a laughing stock over the years anyway, at least the one they give political types. It's now just a popularity contest.

Noble peace prize is now important as a gold wrap chocolate coin.

No surprise, here. The NPP has more to do with politics than peace.

Idi Amin could have won a prize in today's environment.

Hell, Yasser Arafat won the friggin' thing. :rofl

That was the joke of the century.

Wikileaks released the emails from the fraudulent scientists working at East Anglia University and Penn State University that destroyed the Global Warming movement. This was instrumental in discrediting global warming policies.

For this yeoman's work Julian Assange and Wikileaks are heros who deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. Good on you Julian.

Perhaps you guys are too brainwashed with Fox News nonsense to realize this, but promoting transparancy is actually a peaceful thing to do. It's funny, you guys are the same people who go with the whole "if you have nothing to hide then the Patriot Act won't affect you" attitude, yet you are offended by government document leaks?

I am not a fan of Julian Assange, but Wikileaks serves a noble purpose, especially since journalism in this country has become so spineless.

What the hell has Wikileaks done for peace?

I take it you missed the 60 minutes piece. It was very informative, makes you think twice about what they do.

State secrets are only 'secret' because the people running the state want it that way, it's more about power and control than it is about public safety.

Had there been a wikileaks back in 2002-2003, would we have gone to war in Iraq?

I don't watch Fox, I don't support the Patriot Act, but Wikileaks has done nothing to deserve a peace prize, if anything, it should be awarded to the people that leaked the info.

But does anyone know the criteria for a peace prize as set out by Mr. Nobel?

It's someone who "...shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

Wikileaks has done none of that, if anything, they've strained relationships between countries.

That's what I would have thought, before I really understood how wikileaks operates and what their philosophy is.

It's really all about the 1st amendment and transparency--taking back the power by being informed about what our government is up to.

Think of tricky Dick Cheney's walk in-safe. Does that make you feel safe?

Conservatives complain about the Nobel Peace Price because Reagan never won it. Good luck Wikileaks!

"Funding terrorism" was not likely the culprit. Ideological and political convenience was. It is about as worthy as an award in Hollywood. The only difference is that people seem to give more of a damn about it at the moment.
