Storm threatens 100 million in US with snow, ice, cold

No, a nickel for every time a national news agency 1) Makes an ass of themselves with regard to storms 2) Over dramatizes storms. I have no idea why you would take this to a political level, considering I make a conscious decision to remove myself from the crap that is CNN and MSNBC.

They over dramatized swine flu... OMG. I thought the plague was coming until local doctors got on the local radio and actually told everybody here wtf swine flu really is

In Mansfield, La., this morning it was 65. 15 minutes later it was 45 and it's supposed to be in the high teens/low 20's tonight.

I'll be glad when that ****ing global warming kicks in.

It was in the 60's here over the weekend, didn't even break zero today. I think we will be looking at about -18 tonight, so hopefully my truck starts at 5AM. Crazy.

:(man it sucks. I just shoveled over two feet of snow. And I still have the rest of the driveway and its falling hard. There was two feet because of the wind. It blew the snow into certain areas and there the snow just accumulated.

Shorty Pants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's stuck in a tree down the block about 200 feet from the house -- 20" of snow and 3-4 foot drifts. Tom's going to have a freakin' heart attack clearing a path for him back to the house.

I let him out this morning because he's a wild scaredy cat who doesn't use the litter box -- so no choice. He got under Tom's truck and Tom tried to get him back in the house; but Shorty took that as, "OMFG!OMFG!OMFG! somebody's trying to kill me!!!!" So he jumped through the 2-foot snow with Tom trying to catch him. Lesson: Cats can maneuver faster in two-foot snow than skinny white boys. Just shoot me.

It's noon here in Houston, and the temperature is 28 degrees. That's mild for the north, but here in Houston, it's causing lots of mayhem. 3 power plants have bit the dust, and there are rolling blackouts over the whole area. We lost power for about half an hour 3 times today. But the best is yet to come. A blizzard is going to hit here Thursday night, and it will last until Saturday. I have been in Houston 35 years, and have never seen a blizzard here. By Monday, though, all the snow will be gone, as the temperature will be back in the 60's.

You know, I thought Michigan weather was a little weird sometimes, when I lived there, but Texas takes the cake. LOL.

Here in Houston, it was 70 yesterday. Right now, it is about 39. Quite a drop. We will be having some snow on Friday. Haven't seen that in years. I will try to take a picture of it before it melts, which should take about 10 minutes. LOL.

Anybody here have any stories about the ongoing storm they would like to share?

Article is here.

PS - I decided to make my link one to a political site, just in case anybody would like to blame the storm on either Obama or Bush.

We already know you blame Bush, so now we need someone to blame Obama. Any takers?

*crickets*

....okay I'll blame Obama.

Did he come down yet?

My cats are content to stay in. They are sissies.:)

My well has been froze up since Monday. Looks like it will be that way for a while. Luckily I keep big jugs of water filled for emergencies, so have plenty for animals and my coffee.
I've been sick for over a week now and hopefully won't have to try to go anywhere in this weather. Thank goodness I still have electricity and plenty of propane. It could be worse....I could still live in Ohio. :)

Just think of this. My community's ancestors braved much harsher stuff than this (-50 or worse at times) while in holes in the ground-damn near isolated from anyone else, while the North Easterners had homes.

So you want us to feel sorry for people that settled in an area where there was no lumber to build houses and there is nothing between them and the north pole but barbed wore fence? ;)

Were they forced to settle out there like the Indians that were marched to other lands? :boohoo:

Shorty's Back!!!!

It's supposed to be below zero here tonight, so after seven hours of meoooooowing in the tree, Tom got a trimmer pole and put a skylight pole on the end of it with duct tape. Then we went out and harrassed Shorty until he finally came down. OMG!!! Then, he balanced on fences trying to get home.

Shorrrrty!!!!! Meooooow!!!!! Shorrrrrty Paaants!!!!! Meooooooooow!!!! For 45 minutes until he balanced his way home. Walked out of Tom's boots, ended up barefoot...can anyone spell newmonia?? ;-) ;-) I'm sooooo happy!!!

Barb, I hope you feel better soon. This weather, though, was a good excuse to stay in. So you certainly know you didn't miss much.

Shorty is grounded. USE THE LITTER BOX!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is Lakeshore Drive in Chicago:

Hundreds of people have been trapped inside their cars, as the snow has attempted to bury them alive. Thanks to rescue operations, there have been no deaths yet, but there are still hundreds of abandoned cars littering the street, and there is going to be no traffic at all in Chicago for the foreseeable future.

Before this storm is over, there will be plenty of deaths, from Chicago, all the way South to Georgia. This is going to be one for the history books.

Here in Houston, we are bracing for a blizzard tomorrow, with a record snowfall of up to 5 inches, not including a lot of freezing rain and sleet, which will hit first. Both Bush and Hobby Airports are closing tomorrow, and rolling blackouts are going to continue over all of Texas. I will not be out on the road at all, as people here have no idea of how to drive in the snow, or on ice. There will be plenty of accidents here, but we will be in nowhere near as bad of shape as those who live north of here. Dallas is going to get it's ass kicked.

Turned out to be a myth. There was no evidence of canabalism.

We have our own favorite cannibal here in Colorado, Alfred Packer.

alfred packer the san juan cannibal

Among the lore surrounding him is something this board might find a tad grotesque to amusing:

"....Popular legend, albeit untrue (at least according to the official trial record), claims that District Court Judge Melville Gerry sentenced Packer by saying, 'Stand up, Alferd Packer, you voracious, man-eating, son-of-a-bitch. There were seven Democrats in Hinsdale County, and you ate five of them......"

We'll have to bring technology to bear on this problem.

I'd be heading for the motor home in the picture.

People that get stranded on roads with plenty of warning with no good reason to be out there are deserving of the Darwin Award. It's too bad others have to risk their lives to safe them.

Granted some or many of these people may have been coming home from work but they should have known Lake Shore Drive was not a good route that open to the wind (on the lake) and furthermore I had heard Lake Shore drive was being inundated by Lake Michigan water that was freezing to the roadway.

I found this amusing. Perry has to resort to foreign aid for Texas. . .from Mexico no less. . .LOL. . .

Because the Fed keeps blocking Texas from buidling more power plants.

Ding, ding. We have us a winner for the biggest piece of political hackery at DP today.

Erod - For your information (don't know why you need it, since you also live in Texas, but I will provide it anyways), Texas doesn't need the electricity from Mexico because the Feds don't let them build power plants. They need the electricity because plants that were already built had their intake water pipes freeze up.
