Chinese Pianist Plays Propaganda Tune at White House

Lang Lang, who lives in both the United States and China, issued a statement saying that "I selected this song because it has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. It was selected for no other reason but for the beauty of its melody."

He said his goal was to "bridge cultures together through the beauty and inspiration of music … America and China are my two homes. I am most grateful to the United States for providing me with such wonderful opportunities, both in my musical studies and for furthering my career."

rotten commie bastard (sarcasm)

Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Some people will go to such great lengths to be offended by anything.

Ultimately, who really cares?

If they were trying to play little games in order to send a cute message to the faithful back home then they will not be teated seriously as a people.

They were cheap suits anyway.

bottom line---hu wipes his florsheim's on our presidential doormat

currency, climate, korea, taiwan, tibet, human rights, sanctions vs iran...

the council on foreign relations---"amateur hour at the white house"

do you KNOW leslie gelb?

the natl journal---"obama's RODNEY DANGERFIELD moment"

are you FAMILIAR with mr schroth?

der spiegel---"obama's nice guy act gets him nowhere"

the gray lady (nyt)---"obama REJECTED on world stage"

what counterargument can you put up vs this consensus of elite analysis?

ie, what has over-his-head obama accomplished on the world stage?

and, specifically, with the chinese?

on currency, climate, korea, sanctions...

when is he gonna change america's image abroad?

y'know, for the better?

this piano recital by the propagandist pianist is but a symptom of the problem

obama has made the united states an international whipping post

are you aware of what hu did to the doormat at copenhagen?

Low targets, goals dropped: Copenhagen ends in failure | Environment | guardian.co.uk

all our president could do was get pissy

it's the tiffany network (paley's cbs) that called out this happy little hymn as the "widely known anti american propaganda song" about the "people's volunteer (LOL!) army defeating united states military jackals"

a "leading piece of anti american propaganda by the ccp for decades"

the worst human rights abusers on the planet

and obama sits by, humming

he shows far greater animus vs the BRITS and ISRAELIS than he does vs the regime that currently jails his fellow NOBEL peace prize winner

pathetic

O NO. Lang Lang played a song I don't like! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!!!!

Seriously, its a song, get over it.

The pro-chinese are coming out of the woodwork now......watch out Rev....get out your can of Raid.

Yeah, nice excuse AFTER the fact. Take his visa immediately and deport him to Gitmo.

Very clever of the pianist. Slip the knives in when we aren't looking. Make us look the fools.

But what was President Obama supposed to do about it? What did you expect? There's no reason to expect the President to be familiar with Chinese propaganda; if he was, that'd just be another reason for you to call him a Socialist. And even if he'd recognized the piece, there would have been no graceful way to stop the pianist; any reaction at all would have been graceless and classless and would have shown our country in an even poorer light.

Sometimes you have to let the little people take their shots and satisfy yourself with being the better man.

You could get up and quitely walk out of the room. That makes a pretty big statement and is reinforced if others follow. We and other countries do this at the UN when Ahdinminjad starts into his holocaust denial rants.

Would you like to know how many times I have heard Chinese/Taiwanese/Japanese/Koreans make INSINCERE apologies... it is part of the culture... apologize to preserve face, but in reality, there is no apology meant...

Hate to break it to ya' buddy but insincere apologies are pretty much standardfare in any culture. Instead of just presuming he is a liar how about you consider that his intention was not to hate on the Yanks?

I agree with DOL here. I have a fair bit of experience with East Asian cultures and I understand what you mean about saving face, but it is absurd to argue that insincere apologies occur with any more frequency in Asian cultures than in Western. If anything I think it's the other way around, but it's probably about the same. People are people.

You know, I have just been browsing a couple of Chinese discussion boards... they all know the meaning and context of this song... and they are LOVING it... Pathetic...

As for the apologies, I know what you men Demon and Guy, but it is much more prevalant in cultures here, but to be sure, it is also a phenomon in Western cultures (especially in public life and politics)

The Chinese don't really take america seriously.

Why should they take us seriously... look at our "leaders" of government. If I were them, I wouldn't take America seriously either.

That you think browsing Chinese discussion boards will provide you with some sort of legitimate understanding concerning how the Chinese people feel pretty much proves how seriously anyone should take your opinion of China.

I don't care because that is just your excuse. When someone provides something that makes China look better you turn around and say it is a lie or trick and you did it again here. That is not understanding the culture, that is a pattern. Cases such as this prove it has nothing to do with your feelings about the Chinese government, but instead represents your general attitude towards China and the Chinese people.

The fact that he is Taiwanese and lives in Taiwan makes him a little more in-tune with the Chinese perhaps?

He is not Taiwanese. From what I can tell he is a white guy from New Hampshire. He just lives in Taiwan.
