Outspoken Tucson sheriff faces recall bid

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik has never lost an election, but that was before his remarks assigning blame for the deadly Tucson, Ariz., shooting to political "vitriol" and calling Arizona "a mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

Now it's Sheriff Dupnik who finds himself on the public-opinion hot seat. A group opposed to illegal immigration has begun an effort to recall the sheriff in a special election. Meanwhile, a Pima County tea party group is planning on holding a "Dump Dupnik" rally next week outside his office.

maybe the people enjoy the so called vitriol.

As I have already pointed out - the greatest crime anyone can commit against the right wing True Believers is to brand them as such and expose them for what they really are and what their tactics are. So now Sheriff Dupnik has their gun sights focused upon him despite his long and fine record of service to the people. He who dares to raise his voice against what they truly are must be targeted and eliminated as job one.

You sure know how to twist things.

The sheriff should loose his job.

You just don't get it, don't you? He made statements in his role as a public official representing the people of his county that absolutely was unsupportable. His statement was offensive, inaccurate, and reprehensible. If the law in Arizona allows for a recall and the people of the county so desire it, they should go ahead. He and his statement are disgraceful...

Why is the Tea Party getting involved?

Interesting. Sher'f Dumb**** claimed, before the dead bodies had assumed room temperature, that political discussion, protected by the 1st Amendment was responsible for the shootings and deaths. We know his statements were false, and he knew they were false, yet Sher'f Dumb**** carried on with his inflammatory remarks after everyone with half a brain knew the shooter wasn't politically motivated in the manner Sher'f Dumb**** claimed.

He doesn't like the fact people challenge this president. We don't like the fact Obama lied, deceived and had the journOlists cover for him. So we are fighting back. That is what you do in a democracy. You don't have to lay there and take it if you don't like it... and the last election illustrated many didn't like being duped.

Where was Sher'f Dumb**** when Bush was President? When we had a General Betrayus?

There is one thing about the left... they are consistently inconsistent, and laughably so.

So now Sheriff Dupnik has their gun sights focused upon him despite his long and fine record of service to the people.
ROTFLOL... may I suggest you attend a couple weeks sensitivity training! LOL...

Ugh... Haymarket... the people have the right to recall Sher'f Dumb****. It's in the laws of the state, and it is used to remove idiots when they identify themselves and piss off the electorate.

He who dares to raise his voice against what they truly are must be targeted and eliminated as job one.
I would like you to define what we really are. A few points would be nice. You are also assuming only Republicans want Sher'f Dumb**** recalled. There could be Progressives, Moderates, Libs, Communists, Reagan Democrats, RINO's (up to now all forms of Democrats), Libertarians, and Conservatives.

The guy was a disgusting dolt, too bad he didn't reveal what a Dumb**** he was years ago. Now that he has, people are looking to kick his sorry ass out of office.

That's how things work in free societies. There are laws allowing idiots to get the hook.

Public officials are not allowed to voice their opinions? I did not know that.

Who should decide what he says in public?

Not in the middle of an investigation. Well in this case it was before the wounded were even out of surgery.
He immediately started speculating about the motives of the mass murderer when he should have been giving facts.
He doesn't deserve to be Sheriff.

Law enforcement officers aren't allowed to give an opinion that could directly effect the outcome of an ongoing case.

Doopnik's comments could be used in Loughner's defense and win him a far lighter sentence than he deserves.

Doopnik should be proffessional and experienced enough to know that.

I suppose we should also remove Jan Brewer as Governor while we are at it for incorrectly stating there were beheadings at the border and refusing to correct herself? Or is that somehow different?

Why is it, Haymarket, that I almost always disagree with you? I'm a pretty level-headed gal, actually. I often take more liberal positions. Just curious. How do you know that Sheriff Dupnik has a long and fine record of service? I would hardly want a public servant who thought his base was vitriolic and a mecca for bigotry and prejudce.

And what is wrong with an attempt to recall? That's democracy. He should have kept his big mouth shut.

This may be a reason there is a gag order.

LexisNexis News - Latest News from over 4,000 sources, including newspapers, tv transcripts, wire services, magazines, journals.
What these attorneys explained to me is that the county attorney, under Arizona law, the county attorney is effectively the legal advisor for the sheriff and really all county department heads. And as such, his actions can reflect on her actions. And these attorneys that we talked with said that there have been some instances -- none here in Pima County - - where investigators have done things that cause problems with the investigation and prosecutors ended up sanctioned as a result.

Do you have a link for that rule?
Law enforcement officers talk to the media all the time. Much of what they say is just their opinion about a case or suspect.
How could the sheriffs comments be used in JL's defense? It is totally irrelevant and has nothing to do with the crime. You are really reaching.

Law enforcement officers speculate all the time after a crime. This is nothing new and they don't lose their jobs over it..
Tucson voters will decide if he deserves to be their sheriff.

Agree with your last sentence.

Re the first, most law enforcement departments (and certainly larger ones) have media liaisons and department policies that dictate what any of their people can say to the media about any investigation. I'm betting he broke his own rules. And certainly insulted his political base.

This is a nice opinion article. I couldn't agree with it more.

Sheriff Dupnik Must Resign « Thoughts Of A Conservative Christian

Dupnik should apologize and resign for his incendiary and biased comments.
Given the spotlight, he could not bring himself to behave like a professional
law enforcement officer and stick with the facts. He used his fifteen minutes
of fame to lash out at political opponents by calling them bigots, racists, and
inciters of violence, lumping in the entire state of Arizona. He failed to
acknowledge that the only violence at a Tea Party event was perpetrated by
Democrat Teamster thugs against a black Tea Party activist. As a black
American, I think those who throw around the labels of “bigot,” “racist,” and
“hater” are guilty of the very thing of which they accuse others, and they do
our country a great disservice.

Why is the Tea Party getting involved?

Because an elected official (one that it turns out had more intimate knowledge of the shooters activities than anyone and failed to act) used a tragedy to further his own politics and agenda, lied about the causes of the shooting, and then when it turned out his rhetoric WAS bull**** and lies simply ignored that reality and CONTINUED to lie. And of course he CAN...because he plays to mindless morons that SHARE his political rhetoric and thus endorse the bull**** and lies and are now really shocked that people are speaking out against him.

What about when it is learned that said law enforcement official already KNEW about the shooter and KNEW he wasnt politically inspired by the people he was accusing? What if it is learned that said law enforcement official was using the slaughter of innocents to promote a personal political agenda knowing full well what he was saying was a lie?

Did the sheriff even know who Loughner was before the shootings? He had a few minor brushes with the law, nothing that serious. Some claimed he made death threats but no one has come forward to verify that and no one seems to know who recieved the death threats..

Did the sheriff know Loughner? Tucson is a big city and Loughner only had a few minor brushes with the law. Did the sheriff know what he was saying was a lie or was he just saying what he believed? It was an emotional time for him.

The sheriff was covering his ass because he blew the opportunities he had to stop the shooter. Now he faces a world of hurt. I'm happy to see a full court press against the Pima County joke.

The shooter had a few very minor brushes with the law. We still don't know what motivated him or if the shootings weren't politically inspired. We know very little about Loughner and nothing as to why he did it.

That's ridiculous. Do you know what crimes Loughner committed before the shootings?

According to court records, Loughner had two previous offenses.[14] In October 2007, Loughner was cited in Pima County for possession of drug paraphernalia from September 10, 2007, which was dismissed after he completed a diversion program, according to online records. On October 13, 2008 he was charged after defacing a street sign in Marana, near Tucson. That charge was also dismissed following the completion of a diversion program in March 2009

Let me be clear, I only blame loughner.
However, my gut tells me Dupnik came out blaming the right
before fingers were pointed at him and his department.

Jared Loughner is a product of Sheriff Dupnik’s office « The Cholla Jumps
There is no doubt the sheriff should have kept his mouth shut. His emotional attachment to the horrific situation got the best of him. It happens.
If he had been a republican and blamed left wing rhetoric would everyone still be calling for his head?
