That isn't how international law works. Ogaden is a part of Ethopia. This has been confirmed by treaty. There isn't even a functioning Somali state right now. Granted, abuses by the government in Addis Ababa should be condemned, however, that does not give Somalia a right to invade and begin a war as it did nor does it confer on the people a right to referendum. It violates one of the founding premises of the OAU (the predecessor of the AU) as well as modern international law.
Oh please, Ethiopia condemned for abusing those in Ogaden will never happen. I have said it once and I'll say it again. The only reason Ethiopia has Ogaden is because of deal with the British when they begged for it. Nothing more than occupiers. I am beginning to get disgusted at Somaliland's co operation with Ethiopia. I'm embarrassed of my country
I find it highly amusing (and I know you are not Ethiopian to answer this) that Ethiopians whine and whine about being landlocked and how Eritrea belongs to them against international law (which it doesn’t anymore, perhaps they shouldn’t have oppressed the Muslim population and they would have voted to remain with Ethiopia) and how the Port should be returned and they scramble to claim the Afar people and call on Eritrea to give them a referendum so they can split and return to Ethiopia as it would causing it to no longer be landlocked
And yet they refuse the same right to Somalis against their OWN constitution!
ONLF won regional parliamentary elections in 1993, 85% of the Somali regional parliament was ONLF
In 1995 when the new Ethiopian constitution was installed, the ONLF legally asked for a referendum for self determination, as was their constitutional right under the new constitution where a region can vote to remain/leave Ethiopia. They followed every single legal procedures but the Ethiopian government dissolved parliament and arrested all ONLF leaders. Which caused Somalis to pick up arms and fight for their land. Rightfully so.
Ethiopia loves to paint ONFL as a terrorist group and complain every time they are attacked. No Somali wishes to remain with Ethiopia and a majority want to secede and become their own state. They do not want be Ethiopian yet it is forced on them.
Somalia has every right to protect and fight when their ethnics are being oppressed elsewhere and Ethiopia
knows it is not safe as long as Ogaden does not get its referendum. Which is why it take such pleasure in the burning of Somalia
The second Somalia has peace, we will rebuild and recoup and then we will gain back our lost land. I'd much rather see a united HOA Muslim ban on Ethiopia using our ports. They'd have to go elsewhere
Edit: And please don't bring up the "diversity" line that always comes up. Ethiopians and Somalis cannot live together and honestly, I don't want them on Somali land. That is akin to asking Palestinians and Israelis to share under one flag and become one country. Ethiopia loves to pretend it is a diverse country which welcomes all when it is just talk to cover up Hasbesa domination where Amharic is the official language when more people speak Affan Oromo and then claim to be a secular state which respects other faiths - mainly Islam when Church has a huge influence and power on politics and it deliberately tries to shut down Islam as it oppressed it in Eritrea
