Tucson Shooting: Jared Loughner Stopped for Traffic Violation Hours Before Shooting

It seems Loughner was stopped for running a red light just a few hours before he opened fire at the shopping center.

Loughner was stopped at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Saturday by an Arizona Game and Fish Department officer, according to a statement released by the department. He was given a "verbal warning" and released.

Another interesting tidbit is this quote from Sheriff Dupnik:

On Saturday, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said, "There have been law enforcement contacts with individuals where he made threats...to kill."

Dupnik could have gotten a court order that Loughner was a danger to himself or others, preventing him from legally buying a gun. He didn't.

and a friend of Loughner claims that he had no interest in news or politics, and in fact never watched any television or listened to political radio. Guess that will be the final nail in the coffin to that absurd claim by many on the left, at least the honest ones.

A high school friend of the 22-year-old Loughner remembers a man starkly different from the unstable man who appears to have a sinister smile in his mug shot.

According to Zach Osler, Loughner wasn't even politically-minded.

"He did not watch TV, he disliked the news," Osler said. "He didn't listen to political radio, he didn't take sides, he wasn't on the left, he wasn't on the right."

So he didn't watch the news when he was in high school, and he mouthed off to cops when he got busted for grafitti? Nothing in the linked article indicates either that this was apolitical or that law enforcement could reasonably have prevented this from happening.

Don't know where you got that from. His friend said he didn't watch tv or listen to political radio while he knew him. While it's theoretically possible that he suddenly began in the last two years, I find that doubtful.

If you think "mouthing off" equals threats to kill someone as Dupnik claimed, then I don't know what to tell you. If he threatened to kill someone, then further action by the Sheriff's office should have been taken.

"Friend from high school" could mean that he was 14-15 when he knew him, and most people change quite a bit during that period of time. I, for example, was entirely apolitical going into highschool. Not true at 22.

You ever watch Cops? Any drunk nutbag who yells "I'll ***ing kill you" as he's getting busted would qualify for the above quote. Nothing in the article indicates that he made a credible threat, or did anything that would indicate he was any more dangerous than your average troublemaker

"He did say, however, 'There have been law enforcement contacts with individuals where he made threats...to kill.'"

You ever watch Cops? Any drunk nutbag who yells "I'll ***ing kill you" as he's getting busted would qualify for the above quote. Nothing in the article indicates that he made a credible threat, or did anything that would indicate he was any more dangerous than your average troublemaker

The story said they were friends until two years ago.

Everything about this nutbag indicated he was a dangerous person. He's had several run-ins with the police, including several arrests, he threatened to kill people, and law enforcement came to his house to kick him out of college.

You don't know if the situation around his threat was as you described at all.

This is absolutely true, and this guys words shouldn't be taken as the end all be all.

However, his words...along with other accounts from people who knew him...along with his youtube channel...all are painting a picture of someone that, contrary to what the stereotypical discussion has been since 2 hours into this, would be as likely to go after Sarah Palin as he was to go after this Congresswomen with regards to his potential "politics" and someone who would not be motivated by an "atmosphere" of "hate" created by the "right wing".

Essentially, we're not going to know the factors for sure until we actually start getting facts from him and his belongings. However, there is FAR more circumstantial evidence actually related to this case...and not just speculation such as "He may've possibly been influenced by a map that we have no reason to believe he ever saw"...to suggest that this man was someone who didn't identify clearly with either of the political parties in this country and would not have been greatly affected by the "rhetoric" being put out by them.

Good post. I think we'll know a lot more about him after his computer has been dissected. I read today that he was active in several gamer web sites since he was 15, and quit going there only recently. Just like everywhere else, he posted strange questions for the forum community. It seems he was deeply disturbed that he couldn't keep a job (I wonder why ???) or get and keep a girlfriend (I wonder why ???). If I remember right, he posted that he had applied at 65 different businesses, all for mininum wage type jobs, and no one would hire him. He was angry that they held his inability to keep previous jobs against him and also hinted that his arrests were keeping him from getting jobs.

Very, very disturbed young man.
