Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, is planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official, according to a person familiar with the congressman's intentions.

King is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. The proposed law follows the Saturday shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and a federal judge that left six dead, including the judge, and 14 wounded.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the nation's most outspoken gun-control advocates, is backing King's measure and is expected to put the weight of his pro-gun-control organization behind it.

Take it for what you will thats up to you but I am not surprised. Typical Long Island scum

The fact that King is a Republican makes him an even bigger than normal dumbass for suggesting something this idiotic.

Yeah! No kidding!

True story: I was in the McDonalds, in Lafayette, La. I place my order and step out of the way and wait for my food to be ready. I look to my right and who do I see? David Vitter! I would automatically be in deep ****, on accident.

Well, it's good to see you'll bring racism and bigotry into any debate at the drop of a hat, at least.

Bloody Long Islanders.

Where's the racism and bigotry? :lamo

Eh, well, for lack of a better term (like area-ist), it's racist towards those from Long Island -- Long Islanders.

IOW, it's not racist? It's ok to admit it.

I don't care if the guy is purple and is from the planet Klingon that is a dumb completely unenforceable law.

Not referring to the specifics of this proposal; I don't think this spitefulness toward gun regulation reform is the appropriate reaction, even if you disagree with it.

History has shown whenever there is a tragety, statists always use it as an oppotunity to attack the rights of the people. This isnt the first time this has been tried.

If people believe the proposal is a bad political objective, they should organize a counter-argument and take their position on the other side of aisle. Being spiteful and hating public leaders from behind their computers isn't a good response.

This is a really stupid law. Like apdst I've run into my congressman unintentionally before, and I'm sure quite a few other people could share similar stories. Since it's legal to carry concealed, and you can't always control whether you'll be near a congressman, this law seems to be unenforceable.

I just thought of something else too. The article says it would be illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official. I wonder how broad that 'government official' label is?
