PHILADELPHIA – Michael Vick is barred from owning a dog for a year and a half, but the star quarterback's comment that he'd like to bring one into his house generated renewed outrage — and support.

The convicted dogfighting ring operator told the news site TheGrio.com that he genuinely cares about animals and would like to have one for a pet again.

You know, I understand the outrage, but I believe that, if Vick wants a dog after he finishes probation, he should get one. After all, he will have served his sentence by then, and will have paid the price demanded of him.

So, answer the poll. BTW, it's multiple choice.

vick should get a dog
once the terms of his parole have been satisfied

he is stupid to raise this matter now instead of simply waiting til june 2012 and getting whatever dog he wants

Yeah, and Colonel Sanders wants to keep pet chickens.

Get a dog when you finish your sentence. No need to bring it up now while he is still serving :doh

He probably shouldn't have said anything now...or ever. Once his parole is up, I don't see any issue with him getting a dog. Nor do I see it as anyone's business. He should just wait till he is off parole and then go and buy a dog. Don't say anything, don't make a press conference about it, nothing of the sort. Just go to the shelter, buy a dog.

And if he did (well, he's dead now so he can't)? How would it be any of your business?

Cruelty to animals is everyone's business. Cruelty to children is everybody's business. Sexual predators are regulated even after they have paid their debts to society. Vick shouldn't be allowed around animals.

After he has paid his dues to society, you have no say whatsoever in what he is allowed to have or not have.

Animals are property. It's why we can eat them. And I'm not sure that our overbearing sexual predator laws make a good basis for other aggressive government tactics. Once Vick has completed his punishment, he should be free once again to own a dog. You can't punish him for things he may do in the future; only for that which he has already done.

why not?

convicted felons are not allowed to have guns

convicted child molestors are not allowed to live within a certain distance from schools

we already put many restrictions on criminals after they have paid their dues. how is this any different?

Because a court did not impose it on him. Neither does the law. In the other cases, either a court has imposed it, or it is mandated by statute.

Part of me agrees with you. But I do see dogs as more than property. They live. And I would be opposed to him treating a cow the way he did those dogs. One measure of a people is how they treat animals,IMHO, and what he did was inhumane, if not down right evil.

Now, he pauid his debt (which had more to do with gambling than punishment for the dogs he abused and killed), but I'm not sure I would like to see him as a dog onwner again. It just seems like a bad idea, whether we have the right to stop him or not.

because that's the way the system currently is doesn't answer the question of how denying Vick dog ownership is any different, fundamentally, than denying a convicted felon gun ownership.

personally I don't give a rat's ass. If Vick wants a dog let him get a dog.

Absolutely stupid on his part. I can't believe he is whining now. He got a second chance with his football career. Is playing great. Getting the big paychecks.

And now he has the audacity to cry about wanting a puppy now instead of doing his time. I was wrong about him. Initially I supported this guy and thought he might back up his words of feeling remorse. But now it is revealed he is like every con who finds god in prison.

To hell with him. I hope the Eagles get dumped on their butts this weekend.
The Eagles play the Giants this weekend. Go Giants and sack the quarterback.

Legally, once the restriction from his probation is lifted, he can have a dog. Personally, I would prefer he never got within 50 feet of any one's pet, let alone actually own one.

I think they should let him get the dog. fit his ass with a shock collar and have someone follow him around. any time he even thinks about abusing the dog, the shock the piss out of his ass.

Well some of those restrictions are questionable at best. In the end though his crime was not against another human, but another animal. Actually, it was illegal gambling and such the government was pissed about because they didn't get a cut. But since there was no human involved, there's probably less validity to infinite punishment as there are in cases of violent or sexual crime.
