House approves repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell'(edited)

They still serve though. They're just not open.

It's not a good idea to do so post-any surgery/gender alteration, since it is something that they ask about and consider lying about if they find it after the fact.

Although, I'd say that this might open the door to medical waivers (with service limitations).

Beats me why we can't waive a lot of physical limitations, especially those minor ones that keep volunteers out of the service.
A friend was denied enlisting during the Korean conflict for being nearsighted...he had already become a mechanic, with 2 years training at a civilian trade school, but the army wanted him to be perfect. Another person, college graduate, was denied an officer commision for being slightly color blind. They would take him as an enlisted person, tho. He declined.
I don't know if the military is still so fussy, but if they are, some gays might be denied the opportunity to serve on trivial issues.

It's a shame really.

I wonder what they do with intersex people?

Intersex people = People with ambiguous genitalia or people with actually both genitalia.

This was waived. The vote takes place in 10 minutes.

It has already been officially repealed by the senate. It will now await President Obama's signature!

DADT is NOW a DONE DEALl!!!

Unless he doesn't sign it...which seems unlikely, to say the least...

This seems like a Win-Win for the Dems.

They get to say "The repubs didn't vote for it in the senate" (which is true, the first time?), AND they get the repeal.

He has repeatedly promised that he would indeed sign it if it ever got to his desk. I hope he lives to sign it!

With all the crazy-a$$ hate mongers out there, I just can't believe that we've arrived at this point in my lifetime!

I swear to god, I love this country so much!!!

I'm getting confused. Weren't you opposed-ish?

Not in my heart of hearts!

I'm only opposed to the violence and railroading that I fear gays will have to face as a result of DADT being officially repealed. For gays to demonstrate openly gay behavior in public, like on an aircraft carrier, will spell pure trouble. I think! I hope that I'm wrong!

PS.

I don't want this measure to diffract the military in any way...

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

This stand alone repeal should pass, and it's great news.

Agreed! These men and women put their lives on the line. I dont give a rats ass if they are queer or not!

But of COURSE the A-hole Republicans are PROMISSING that they will repeal it
Conservatives really DO seem like the Arian Nation.

Yikes! Im getting to that age when my genitalia is taking a lot longer to make up its mind.

I hope that won't keep me out of the army.

You're too funny, dude!

more fyi, a bit of bad news, this time, sorry

but i know it won't bring you down

it looks like lindsey means it, he'll kill start

START struggling to get to finish line - Glenn Thrush and Shira Toeplitz - POLITICO.com

meaning---the PRICE for dadt may ultimately turn out to be start, obama's "top priority"

lindsey was the 67th, ie, the last vote to move start to debate

that is, if he bolts, all by himself, the treaty will die (for now)

politico surprisingly sees start as unlikely to be brought up after january

if so, it would amount to a monumental misplay, as the votes, should the pact proceed properly, are certainly there

lindsey on face the nation this morning showed his cards---his position is that reid's resort to all these political parleys has rather robbed the solons their opportunity to advise and consent on foreign affairs

it really does look like start is all graham's---he can pass it, he can kill it

recall his obama body blows as gop point man the last 2 years on immigration and energy

stay up, enjoy your little pride parade

All we need to do is get Navy Pride to say START is dead, and that will pretty much ensure that it passes. :)

But seriously, it has nothing to do with DADT. McCain has a personal animosity to Obama just as he had a personal animosity to Bush. If Reid had put START first, then chances are that neither DADT nor START would have passed.
