Michelle Obama has new warning on obesity

Having a refund doesn't mean you didn't pay taxes. It means you gave the government an interest free loan for a year, ie you overpaid.

Do you qualify for the earned income credit?

drinking to excess can destroy families, can cause the death or injury to innocent people, death, illness to the drinker, lead to poverty, crime
gambling addiction can lead to poverty, destruction of families, crime
smoking can lead to health issues, financial strain
adultery can destroy families
pre-marital sex can lead to low self-esteem later, STDs, unwanted children, abortions
gay sex can cause STDs
adult porn addiction can destroy families, lives
Rap music I just don't like it
Rock and Roll I do like it, but didn't want to look biased against Rap
violent video games Think they bad for impressionable young children and might lead to acting out.
single parents many live on government subsidies, disadvantage to the children
abortion morally bad for society and not healthy for the unborn
laying on sofa, watching TV causes obesity
not working, by choice not harmful I guess, just not helpful
bars can lead to arrests from fights or DUI
accepting subsidies just because you qualify drag on tax payers
Having Dish network while on welfare just not right if you can't afford food and rent on your own.
wasting food just wrong and well, wasteful.
finding loop holes to avoid taxes, legal but a simpler tax system would be more fair to those who can't find or use them.
letting your pets reproduce just wrong in every way unless you are a reputable breeder. fill up shelters, strain on animal control
wasting all day on DP
could lead to mental breakdowns and can cause obesity.

but the childhood obesity problem deserves 17 more gov. programs billions of dollars, tons of regulations, because it's costly to our healthcare.
Oh, and it's a danger to our national security.
It's breeding a cradle to grave mentality.
Government needs to get the hell out of the way and let people live their lives, and raise their own kids.

Stright sex can cause (or spread) STDs.

But, no, there is no breeding of the cradle to the grave mentality in working together to solve problems. We may question how many we need, how effective the are or aren't, or if something else might work better, but let's not paint it as something it isn't.

Here's another indictment of the bill and a very telling commentary.

"We can’t just leave it up to the parents." --Michele Obama

IOW, the government has to step in and do it for us. Just more nanny-statism.

That's where I take issue: why should it costs billions to stop serving pizza and start serving healthier foods?

Not sure it does, but pizza (and other cheap food) is cheaper than healthy food. So, i suspect it will cost more.

You had a tax debt for '09?

I'm not sure what you mean by a tax debt. Did I owe money at the end of the year? I might not specialize in taxes, but I am an accountant. It's not that hard to break even.

So, you didn't have to write a check to Uncle Sam this spring? ok, got it.

So, you didn't have to write a check to Uncle Sam this spring? ok, got it.

don't you think it's possible that she had enough withheld? after all, the goal is to break even. and having to write a check for 9k could easily put you in a penalty position.

It's not that hard to owe money. All it takes is someone claiming too many exemptions.

People that have a tax debt every year aren't real concerned about how tax money is wasted on bull****. My tax bill for '09 was 9 g's and the Libbos want to make me pay more. What was your tax debt for '09? Did you even have one, or did you get a refund?

First off, let's get one thing straight...

My tax situation whether I owe the government or received a refund is none of your concern.

Second, the EIC has nothing to do with this debate.

Third, if you truly have a problem with the government taking on the responsibility to care for the needy in this country, I would highly recommend that you and others who take such a strong anti-compassionate stance to go down to a soup kitchen, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, your local AMVETS society or any other local charity and either donate your time, your money or a portion of your material wealth. I'm willing to bet you're no different than most anyone else in that your only contribution to those in need has either been:

a) pay via taxation.

b) write a check or stuff a box or metal bucket with a few coins or a couple of dollars (if that).

c) walk on by and say it's someone else problem; I've done my part - I work and pay my taxes!

Yet, you carry so much resentment towards those who haven't achieved what you've achieved and lump them all in this big group that says, "low wage earner = lazy ass!" So, I ask when was the last time you took someone you viewed as "under-privilaged", mentored him or her, taught them how to do for themselves in order to be responsible and provide for himself? You and others who share your point of view come across as someone who honestly believes that the only contribution the wealthy have to those who aren't within their income bracket is to give them a job and pay them a wage. But is it a living wage? Can the average person today make a living - that is pay rent/mortgage, afford even a 2nd-hand car, pay their utility bill, buy groceries - and move themselves forward thereby improving their station in life? The answer is no.

Everyone needs a helping hand. Even the wealthiest among us will tell you they didn't get there alone. The "work" they put in to amass their wealth includes seeking the aid of others which is many cases involved (wait for it...) obtaining a small business loan from the government perhaps? = putting some of YOUR tax dollars to work so that others can take that gamble to either succeed or fail depending on the decisions they make to market their idea be it a product or service. Or how about borrowing that money from a bank - an entity that clearly has more wealth than the next guy and is in business to loan money in order to (wait for it...) make money. Or what about venture capitalist or borrowing money from friends and family, or doing things the old fashioned way (which I'm surprised still works for some) and saving and saving and saving until you've set aside all the initial financing you need to open doors for yourself. That's how it use to be done and I'm sure many people still do it that way, but not everyone does. Why? Because it's hard! But it's far more "convenient" to take out a loan and run the risk with OPM - Other People's Money.

My advice to yourself, sir, and others who truly harbor such ill-will towards others who are less fortunate than yourselves: stop, become a mentor, teach others your ways so that they can ascend to the level of success you apparently have attained instead of being so damned bitter. But most of all "Seek first to understand and then be understood." Not every homeless person is homeless of their own choosing. Not every person who is poor is poor because they are lazy. Some just don't know how to move themselves from one station to the next. If you want to end poverty, the best thing we all can do is help lift up our fellow man. So, if you want government to stop misusing your tax dollars, become part of the solution! Put your time, knowledge and skills where your mouth is. Teach the next one your ways if you believe them to be so noble.

Oh...btw, for those who are interested...

Since the thread topic is about nutrition and healthy eating, I found this website that allows you to select say a family farm or organic diner, for example, in your area. I know...that's what the Yellow Pages are for, but I thought it was a decent website and wanted to share. I won't give the name because it would be promoting (I hope I haven't violated a forum rule, but if so, mods feel free to remove this post), but if you're interested just click on the link above.

I think you've got the wrong leak. Unless you meant to go to a Fox news story.

I was overweight when I joined the Army. So, I've done plenty of research. Can grossly obese join the military? Probably not. But, yes, fat kids can join the military.

Carry on, I'll be in the area all day.

In point of fact the military has restructured their training programs with the EXPECTATION that a good percentage of todays recruits will be coming in more pear shaped (fat) than carrot shaped. The goal is to bring them into a healthy fitness and physique without causing physical harm and washing them out.

Ah I see what you were going for. Except I do pay tax dollars and I'm thrilled with the green agenda. In fact, I'd support higher taxes to encourage it.

 Hey, I'm a liberal.

hey 'liberal'...if you guys just invest your own dollars in the green industry we wont have to worry about the tax dollars! ;)

Oh, no! We can't let that happen. That would mean that the market would set the pace and so far, the market has said, "uh, noooooo!", to all this green bull****.

But it's so much more effective if we tax everyone!

I wish someone would tell the people at Whole Foods that. Maybe then I could go grocery shopping without fighting over the last of the organic arugula!

Ya think so? Cuz...while it may be spreading the pain...I dont really see it as being very effective. Solar panels (and especially storage batteries) have been in the process of being developed since the 60's. Hybrids are looking more and more like a flash in the pan than the next big thing...and I know its just me...but I simply dont have a whole lot of confidence in ANYTHING the fed gets its paws into.

BTW...I was tweakin at ya, not picking a fight...Im mellowing in my old age!

You'd think if there was that large a demand their marketing people would do a better job of purchasing. If its anything like our local grown market, they have the occasional run on a given product but they end up throwing out more 'organics' than they sell.

I know. And I was mostly....tweakin at ya too. I do thank you for your tax dollars though! ;)

I do think sometimes the government needs to protect us from the market. My biggest worry right now is our dependence on oil. It's not going to last forever. And I don't trust the market to provide a solution quickly enough. If the government can plan ahead and come up with some feasible alternatives through subsidies or what have you, I'm down with that.

I've been in grocery stores like that. I currently live in a fairly liberal area though with a lot of disposable income. Whole Foods does well.

I am going to invest in most of that stuff... my next car will be a fuel efficient hybrid. I have more research to do (model, cost, etc).. but some areas where I live, that stuff is really popular so it might depend on your location.

My friend lives in Portland, and that is the way it is there... They are really big into green energy too
