Obama to sign Child Nutrition Bill today

You are eating too few calories I think.... Lets say you are what 6' 200lbs? You should be eating 2439 calories a day to maintain your current weight... 1439 calories to lose 2lbs a week.....

Now that's if you do nothing. You need to add the calories burned for your running to the calorie total. Lets say you burn 1000 calories running, you would need to eat 3439 to maintain current weigth, and you would need to eat 2439 calories to lose 2 lbs per week.

Maximum is 3lbs.... 923 per day. that would be 1923 if you are running a 1000 calorie run..... So you are right at the cusp, if you go under that 923 calorie threshold, or 1923 threshold with your running, you are putting your body in starvation mode and you will struggle to lose weight...

And if you want to really change body comp:

The Whole30, Version 3.0 | Whole9

Cut out grains, dairy, sugar, and all processed foods.

I'm 5'9 and just under 200. My dietician wants me at 170. She says I should eat 1900 calories a day, but upped it due to my activity level. I have one glass of milk a day. Avoid sugars (some natural sugars are ok, but limit even natural sugars). My medical doctor and weight doctor say dieting screwed up my metabolism, and that I have a huge metabolic hurddle to climb. The trainer says he has nothing for me as i already do more than he'd give me. I just know I work hard, and did lose a ton of weight, but it appears my active life early on hurts as much as it helps.

My parents took away Soda from the house when I was 13, best decision I think they ever made... I hate soda now. Makes me feel sick.

From what I gather, soda, even diet soda, really effects weight in a negative way.

build muscle as well. maintaining muscle requires calories burning... even when on the couch eating ring dings. ;)

You can reset your metabolism anytime by switching up what you eat. check out that whole 30. It really works... (I go on and off it as needed, I love me some bread, beer, etc...)

You can't reset your age metabolism, it naturally slows, but you most definatley can reset any habits your body learned about storing calories.

I'd say some government programs work quite well, war is a great government program, you're pretty efficient at that :2razz:

Keeping us safe is about all the Gov. should be responsible for. They should do that well.
It's not their responsibilty to tell people what to eat.
Well at least not until they became responsible for health care.
The more the government "gives" us, the less freedoms we have.

Who's forcing anyone to eat anything? It's giving kids the choice... I thought choice was a good thing...

My habits have changed. Though I always ate good food, just a lot of it (a couple of pounds of grapes a day back when, for example). Not sure what you mean by the whole 30 thing.

Or exhibit self control and leave 1/2 of it on your plate. :prof

That's wasteful. Don't be bashful...ask for a take-out container and make another meal out of it.
Dontcha know kids are starving in America!

Click the whole9 life link. It's a paleo diet 30 day challenge. it's something to check out.

basically:

The Whole30 Program, As Outlined

Eat real food – meat, fish, eggs, tons of vegetables, some fruit, and plenty of good fats. Eat foods with very few ingredients, all pronounceable ingredients, or better yet, no ingredients listed at all because they’re natural and unprocessed.

More importantly, here’s what NOT to eat during the duration of your Whole30 program. Omitting all of these foods and beverages will help you regain your healthy metabolism, reduce systemic inflammation, and help you discover how these foods are truly impacting your health, fitness and quality of life.

Do not consume added sugar of any kind, real or artificial. No maple syrup, honey, agave nectar, Splenda, Equal, Nutrasweet, xylitol, stevia, etc. Read your labels, because companies sneak sugar into products in all kinds of ways.
Do not eat processed foods. This includes protein shakes, pre-packaged snacks/meals, protein bars, milk substitutes, etc.
Do not drink alcohol, in any form.
Do not eat grains. This includes (but is not limited to) wheat, rye, barley, millet, oats, corn, rice, sprouted grains and all of those gluten-free pseudo-grains like quinoa. (Yes, we said corn!) This also includes all the ways we add wheat, corn and rice into our foods in the form of bran, germ, starch and so on. Again, read your labels.
Do not eat legumes. This includes beans (black, kidney, lima, etc.), peas, lentils, and peanuts or peanut butter. This also includes all forms of soy – soy sauce, miso, tofu, tempeh, edamame, and all the ways we sneak soy into foods (like lecithin).
Do not eat dairy. This includes all cow, goat or sheep’s milk, cream, butter, cheese, yogurt, whey, ice cream, etc.
Do not eat white potatoes. It’s arbitrary, but they are carbohydrate-dense and nutrient poor, and also a nightshade.
Most importantly… do not try to shove your old, unhealthy diet into a shiny new Whole30 mold. This means no “Paleo-fying” less-than-healthy recipes – no “Paleo” pancakes, “Paleo” pizza, “Paleo” fudge or “Paleo” ice cream. Don’t mimic poor food choices during your Whole30 program!
One last and final rule. You are not allowed to step on the scale for the duration of your Whole30 program. This is about so much more than just weight loss, and to focus only on your body composition means you’ll miss out on the most dramatic (and lifelong) benefits this plan has to offer. Give yourself a well-deserved, long overdue break from fixating on that number on the scale! Absolutely NO weighing yourself or taking comparative measurements during your Whole30.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Legislation to feed more lunches and dinners to hungry children at school is about to become law.
President Barack Obama will be accompanied by his wife, Michelle, as he signs the bill. The ceremony is scheduled to take place Monday at a District of Columbia elementary school.
The $4.5 billion bill would expand free school meals for the low-income students and give the government the power to make them healthier. The government will decide what kinds of foods may be sold in vending machines, lunch lines and fundraisers during school hours.
Supporters say the law is needed to stem rising health care costs because of growing childhood obesity and also to feed more hungry children in tough economic times. Some Republicans contend the measure is too expensive and an example of government overreach.

I guess the Republicans failed to stop it.
No more fundraising from bake sales. Is big government going to also pay for things that the bakesales usually pay for? Or should they switch to apple and spinach sales?

I still don't understand why they're using the school-meal system to feed kids AFTER SCHOOL. .. this si my understanding, anyway - that the *school cafeterias* will provide all 3 meals - and snacks.
In some areas they already just GIVE kids food at school to take home to their families.

That's what food-stamps, wic and other programs are for - what's wrong with just fixing and improving THOSE systems that ARE in place.

That's what stuns me about our government - no matter WHO is in charge - instead of just using what's in place already for a particular purpose they'll create an all new thing to serve the same purpose or commandeer something else to satisfy the same purpose.

before and after, and food stamps.

Pithy comment tho it is, anyone with any experience with the military system will tell you that while the warfighter kicks ass, there is TREMENDOUS waste in the military both from the military and civilian expenditures. So...no...government programs dont necessarily 'work quite well'

And short of making our country less secure or putting servicemen into the unemployment line, in the past I've detailed out many areas of military waste and inefficiency - but you will NEVER see them making a dip in all those many ways, ever.

I agree...because BOTH parties have their sacred cows. Which is why the taxpayer always ends up paying an ever growing federal budget, monthly deficits, and a massive debt.

No doubt....As a trucker, I ballooned up to about 280lbs. Which isn't real bad considering I am 6'4" tall, but as I get older, I knew I wanted to drop the lbs. and get a little healthier, so I started packing my own food, and avoid the fast junk as much as possible.

j-mac

Wow! How'd you figure that out all by yourself without the government's help. :)

Yep, it also centers around the fact that the government would have to actually analyze and determine where things are ineffective - and make it happen. .. sure, a lot of changes to regulations and so on. Heck - they could just stick TO the rules and save us money that way.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to steal my brownies.

Recipe? what is your secret ingredient? wouldn't be something from your "herb garden", would it?

I think it's also going to be year round. I didn't hear about the sending food home. Maybe the leftovers the kids wouldn't eat?
It's really all about getting more and more people dependent on government for all their needs.

What would you like? I was with "it sounds like a dumb law." And you notice your clip ends before she finishes her answer. So what do you want, exactly, from this clip?

Elena Kagan on fruits and vegetables | Opinion L.A. | Los Angeles Times

Read this. It seems to agree that the clip stopped short of her answer.
I disagree. I watched the whole thing live when it happened. She refused to say that making people eat fruits and vegetables each day was unconstitutional. That was the point of me posting the clip, not saying they would, but in my opinion is because they would have no way of enforcing it.:popcorn2:

Sounds like the govt is subsidizing food producers...

Nothing always works, be it the government or the private sector. But often things do improve, or manage.

Nothing always works, especially what government does and everybody is aware of this.

This is just another progressive entitlement program. :coffeepap

Well the reason I have this concern is because Jamie Oliver (the naked chef from the UK) came over and did a school lunch program that didn't really go over well.

Don't worry my friend... if the kids don't eat the food, then it can be given to the homeless. The government doesn't believe in wasting anything.
