Republicans block child nutrition bill

Just starting to look it over, but this is in the GOP executive summary:

S. 3307 would increase federal spending by $4.6 billion on school meal programs, expand the size of government by creating or expanding 17 programs, place onerous unfunded mandates on local school districts and state governments, increase prices for paying families, and allow federal bureaucrats to determine what foods children can and cannot be served at school.

Holy crap!

So, exactly how do you read this?

More and more and more and more and more government.

Of course, the Dems will just exclaim "Republicans want poor kids to starve to death!"

yep...establishing grant programs...creating new organizations (expanding government), placing all foster students on the free meal program (even tho foster parents are already provided money to support and sustain the kids), providing for the meals not only during the school year but also during the summer, etc etc etc...

Nah...this isnt bad legislation at ALL... lets just rush out and offer blanket support because some article says evil republicans are hurting the children. no worries...I doubt any of the senators actually read the legislation before THEY supported it either...

Not to mention there isn't a spare nickel in the couch cushions to pay for this.

So, we shold not assure children get healthy food. Snacks ansd soda sell, so be it?

pshaw...well just slip it onto the end of the 14 trillion dollar debt (because it isnt like they had to agree on a budget in 2010) and then tax the evil wealthy because they can pay for it. then we will throw in some class warfare rhetoric about how the evil republicans are trying to 'take away' rights from the children...hell...Im seeing a ton of campaign material developing here...

Do parents plan school meals?

pop?

Coke?

Soft drink?

Which do you prefer? :coffeepap

Take a look at the bill. Read until you find the words, soda pop, or soft

drink . This bill isn't about junk food of starving children. It's about growing government.

Meh, they're already touching our balls, why not take away pop? :2razz:

So, schools should stop providing lunch altogether?

Maybe they should stop providing free lunches.
I don't really know, but way back when I was in school, I don't remember anyone getting them free. But then they cost like 40 cents :)
Some kids packed in brown bags and some kids walked home for lunch.
No one went hungry and I don't recall kids eating only junk.
It's time parents were given back the responsibility of feeding their kids.

I did. In the 60's. It really was a help. But I don't see why I should oppose feeding children who could use the food, or why I should oppose making sure the selection is healthy.

So, if the government isn't going to mandate healthy food, what exactly do you think they will mandate? I guess I don't see what you fear.
