North Korea reportedly fires at South

and no way can he afford an actual war. .

He doesn't have to be able to afford a protracted war. If he's demented reality doesn't matter. As far as starving to death my sources say his troops are well fed and it's the general civillian populace that is suffering.

I dont doubt his mental status. Dementia/delusions sort of come with proclaiming yourself a God. And yes it is his people that are starving, but eventually the coffers will run dry...even for the military. As I said...I doubt he wants a war...he wants concessions.

isn't that what we want the media to say when they have not confirmed initial reports?

one thing that appears to be overlooked is that the south koreans may have fired first, during military exercises NK warned them not to conduct in disputed waters
it was reported that the south korean's initial shelling was not towards the NK border
again, reportedly

From what I read, it said that there were going to be training exercises in an area that NK disputes, not necessarily a generally disputed area. Also, considering the attack on the SK ship several months ago and now this, I am amazed at the restraint that SK is showing in trying to avoid all out war...In days past NK would be toast by now.

Written like a true liberal. LOL

I'm no liberal. Just pointing out the double standard.

Funny how when we put a panzy in office, the whole world starts squawking. China won't discuss North Korea with us. Russia won't side with us against Iran. Our enemies meet openly and proddingly with Venezuela, Cuba, etc., make all sorts of deals in our face.

This is nothing new. Same during Bush 2. I seem to remember Russian invading Georgia while Cheney squawked and Bush did nothing. I also recall several incidents with NK during Bush 2 with nothing that smacks of the macho you assume. Your lack of memory is telling. Revisionist history actually.

The world laughs at Obama. He is the kid that gets stuffed in the trash can and has his lunch money stolen every day.

Not so. Only right wingers hoping the world laughs. Most of the peace loving world is relieved Bush the cowboy is gone. I also can recall some real laughing by the world when Dumbya was in office. I cringed whenever he opened his mouth. I was embarassed to have him as my president.

I think when 1/2 parties disputes a territory it is 'disputed'. Also they are likely restraining themselves because they're not likely looking for a total war.

You're assuming a man who thinks he is God would make rational sane decisions, and one being he does not want war. I would never assume the actions of a nut job. For all we know he may want to go out in a flame of glory.

There have been past incidents involving casaulties on the DMZ. In all cases SK has shown restrain. Some day the cork will pop, or hopefully there is an overthrow of the NK regime by the people. If that happens it will be very bloody.

America would be well advised to come back to North America and leave the South Koreans to their fate.

HA! USA would then lose all credibility with their allies. It does not matter that the people of those nations hate us. They would hate us even more if we left and they were stuck with a war due to that decision.

If that be the case, I would not be unhappy to oblige him in his request. But I think Kim is already preparing for his future and legacy (his son is being groomed to be the next nutbag in chief of NK)...I dont think he is THAT crazy.

Ok, well, I dispute that Mexico is not in its entirety part of the US. Does that mean that Mexico is disputed land?

Yeah, fair enough, although I don't think that the DMZ incidents have been of this magnitude have they?

Yes. N.Korea has fired MLRS at S.Korea before.

The question is, what is China trying to accomplish with this latest event?

Kim Jong Il doesn't have much longer left to live, I figured he'd go out in a bang.

I think you all have to understand a few things. Should China cross the Yalu River this time it will not be to help North Korea and South Korea can take care of itself. Also, this most recent development is just a further indication that the internal political situation is becoming increasingly unstable. Kim Jong-Il is in bad health, his successor is an inexperienced youngster, and their economy increasingly suffers. As a result of all this, and the fact Lee Myung-Bak is less forgiving than the past administration, the North's military is asserting itself more and more.

While further escalation may make war unavoidable at this point it is quite possible to calm tensions.

Only a fool would defend a people who hate us. The South Koreans don't like Americans. Do you remember the Mad Cow Candlelight vigils that attracted hundreds of thousands of anti-American demonstrators.

See its questionable about their hatred. Do they really hate us enough that they would want us out so that NK can go in and start a bloody mess? I doubt most SK's would put a fight like the NK's would. So if we leave the NK's would have one hell of an easier time defeating SK. The will of the people in the SK is weak. They could never last against a regime and people of NK. While they have had their number of anti-American protests most protests have been against the US government. And our government is liked by who? Not even our own people are 100% supportive of its government. But most would not dare to rise against the nation. We have it good and so do the SK's. If we left we'd leave them open to invasion and certain defeat.
