House GOP blocks bill to extend jobless benefits

Wrong, the reason they are expiring is that is the only way that Democrats would approve them back when Bush took office and Democrats controlled the Senate. Further why do you contiue to buy the rhetoric that people keeping more of their own money is an expense to the govt? That is ridiculous, there is no line item in the budget for tax cuts and as I have shown many times both the Reagan and Bush tax RATE cuts grew govt. revenue so explain to me how growing govt. revenue is an expense?

There is plenty to cut in the budget as all this Congress has to do is get out of those programs that are state responsibilities instead of the Federal Responsibility and then grow the economy to maximize revenue growth.

No, it was the Byrd rule and PAYGO that meant they couldn't go for more than 10 years if they weren't paid for. I would call that being fiscally responsible.

Economists don't agree that tax cuts grow revenue. Tax everyone at 1% and see what that does. :rofl

Plenty to cut in the Budget? Okay, show me the money. What are you going to cut to get us in the black?

Conservatives are sending more than their withholding?

Oh yeah, "Other People's money", people who are wealthy now can afford it. I think that is preferable to putting it on the credit card and letting our grandkids pay it off. It's a moronic policy to borrow money for things that depreciate in value. You pay interest and get no return on your investment.

You don't know what withholding taxes are? Who are you to tell someone else what they can afford? Why is it you aren't focusing on what the poor can afford? Have you Seen any of those "poor" owning cell phones, computers, flat screen TV's, or how about cable?

As for putting things on the credit card, ever consider that spending is too high. How much interest is there on the 3 trillion that Obama has added to the debt? How much does the govt. spend on unemployment benefits each month and I reject the claim that money benefits the economy as it is offset by the taxes and debt service to pay for it.

Don't know if anything will get through the think head of a liberal. You don't have to pay for people keeping more of their own money. That means less need for that so called "liberal help." Show me a line item on the budget that shows tax cuts? In order to pay for something it has to be an expense which destroys the liberal argument.

As for what economists think, I can show you economists that believe that tax cuts grow revenue but that is irrelevant because I have shown the actual numbers from the U.S. Treasury Dept which is the checkbook of the U.S. Please explain to me how tax revenue grew AFTER tax cuts? Bush tax cuts went into effect in July 2003

2000 3,132
2001 3,118
2002 2,987
2003 3,043
2004 3,265
2005 3,659
2006 3,996
2007 4,197

I'm not telling them what they can afford. I know they will be just fine if they have to pay an extra 3%. Why are you framing this discussion as class warfare?

The GOP is going to raise the debt ceiling. I already said that spending is a problem. Quit pretending that I didn't.

Do foreclosures and bankruptcies help the economy?

Never fear they will hide a day or two and then come back acting like those facts were never presented and making their same tired old argument over and over again. Facts confuse liberals who prefer buying rhetoric from this incompetent Administration.

Most of the foreclosures and bankruptcies should never have occurred as people signed onto loans that they couldn't afford. Whether or not they hurt the economy is a mixed bag as they have both a positive and negative affect depending on how the govt. reacts. Stop bailing out people who make poor personal choices.

Please show me a line item in that budget I posted that has tax cuts as an expense?

You called tax cuts an expense and ignore that FACT that spending isn't A problem, it is THE Problem. Social engineering is what liberal govt. always wants to do and that will always be the problem because all that does is give govt. more and more power by creating more and more dependence. Why are liberals fighting so hard to keep the American people from keeping more of what they earn? Which party cares the most about what individuals get to keep and what they pay in taxes? Think about it?

Believe the issue and reporting of the bill has been somewhat distorted. My understanding is that the GOP was just insisting that the money for the benefits be appropriated from existing funds. And not just pulled from nowhere and added to the debt. Dems couldn't abide by that little detail.

Personal opinion is that the overall benefit extensions have gone bat **** crazy. Two ****ing years of unemployment benefits??!!! Am thinking maximum was 13 weeks when I was a lad. And am pretty certain it was 26 weeks not too long ago.

This isn't just a Democrat thing. Both parties are vote grubbing rascals and fiscal dimwits....

.

Dems didn't need any help from the Rep. The Dems are still in power. Blaming the Rep. is just just dirty pool playing. They did the same thing with something else a while back to make the Rep. look bad in the media. They could have gone regular order and only needed Dem. votes. Instead they took a different route and needed some Rep. Then again it still could have passed in a bi-partisan way if the Dems had agreed to pay for it with unspent stimulus funds. They said no.
You are right, 26 wks is supposed to be the limit. They just keep giving "emergency" extentions. The state have to pay this money back WITH INTEREST to the federal govt. I think it's an emergency that we stop now before more than Ca is in the crapper.

I think far too many have very short memories on some issue, like the November 2 election, when the Republicans took over 60 seats in the House and 682 state legislative positions, a truly historic election and results. The people were screaming, "Stop the Spending!" so now we have a test of that vote so let's see what happens. 2 years doesn't seem to be enough time to find a job for some people so just how long should people be given? Cannot get an answer from any Obama supporter!

I hope I haven't already posted this link in this thread. It's an eye opener and explains things in simple terms anyon should be able to understand.

The reason: Danish studies show that the longer a person goes without a job, the harder it is to find work. Many people get a job within the first three months of entering the system, but many more wait until just before benefits expire to take anything available.

it shows that between 2005-7, the number of people who got jobs during their four years of benefits — the green line – rose at the beginning before dropping sharply, then spiked as benefits were about to run out, only to plummet after. The red line shows similar behavior in 1998, when Denmark’s benefit period was five years.
“It shows that people are not seeking all the jobs they could get, but just the jobs they would like to have,” said Steen Bocian, chief economist at Danske Bank.

When in trouble always bring out the classwarfare card and "republicans want to starve kids, kill seniors, and pollute the air" rhetoric. Now add to that Republicans want to kick the unemployed into the curb. How long do today's unemployed get unemployment benefits? doubt that many here who support extension even care that it is two years.

It's not 2 years. Should this latest extension somehow pass, it would be called 99 weeks of unemployment, which would result in recipients receiving checks for 49.5 weeks. You receive double compensation checks from your State unemployment commission. I know, I was unemployed in 2003. When my year was over only 6 months had passed. I got an extension from president Bush for 13 weeks. You guessed it: 6.5 more weeks of compensation.

I just wanted to inform those, who may have never been unemployed, that screaming about "2 years of unemployment compensation" is wrong.

A lot has changed since 2003

FRBSF Economic Letter: Extended Unemployment and UI Benefits (2010-12, 4/19/2010)

then it was extended another 26 weeks prior to the November 2010 elections.

You are right. It really is 99 real weeks. Oh well, it looks like our homeless population is about to expand by an order of magnitude.

99 Weeks: When Unemployment Benefits Run Out - 60 Minutes - CBS News

It cost $100b to extend unemployment to 99 weeks. I guess it's time to cut off the extensions. It's also time to liberate the Iraqi people from US taxpayer dollars. We won't look good if we finance the Iraqis while feeding American citizens cold turkey.

Right we have homeless people in this country because of the Iraq War? We have starving people in this country because of the Iraq War? Since when has lack of spending caused the problems of high unemployment, poverty, and homelessness? Too many here are very naive when it comes to actual facts and reality. I don't know why you or anyone else continues to buy the liberal rhetoric which does nothing but make you look foolish when countered with the facts.

This country has spent trillions on the "War on Poverty" and we still have poverty. I hate to break it to you but there were homeless people and people living in poverty before the Iraq War.

Yeah, 99 weeks. And the historical tradition of our congress pricks in Washington is that once an "entitlement" is provided/extended it seldom is ever reduced/rescinded.

Will be surprised if it is ever less than 99 weeks anytime soon....

For those who thought unemployment benefits were only adding to federal debt. Check out the states that are headed for trouble because of the extensions.

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/25830479/detail.htmlState
Sen.-elect Fran Millar told Geary the state owed the federal government $416 million dollars, money borrowed to cover unemployment benefits since the economic downturn.
Millar said that total grows to $1.1 billion by the end of 2013 if the state does not make changes to taxes or how it pays benefits

Beebe Hopeful for Compromise on Unemployment Debt - ABC News

Gov. Mike Beebe said Tuesday he's hopeful business and labor leaders can come up with a proposal to repay more than $330 million Arkansas owes the federal government for unemployment benefits so lawmakers can address the issue during next year's session.
Arkansas is one of 35 states that owe the federal government money for regular unemployment benefits, said Randy Zook, the president and chief executive officer of the chamber. It has had to borrow because of the number of residents collecting unemployment benefits. Zook said that if Arkansas doesn't find a way to repay the money, the federal government will recoup it by raising the tax businesses pay for unemployment.

Don't unemployment benefits go right back into the economy? Those collecting usually are paying for mortgages, food, heat, pretty much the essentials. They aren't saving much of that money. When unemployment for millions runs out there will be another wave of foreclosures and we will fall into another recession. Might want to be careful what we wish for.

Well it looks like the House Dems finally learned something from the GOP. Its not about laws or people or the nation but rather the most important thing is making your opponent look bad. Thanks for the lesson Republicans. We hope to see more of it in the future.

It's a good thing the Democrats never tried to do that when George W. Bush was in office.

Actually, I work for a living. And when at work, I am actually working. I have a hockey game to go to tonight but I'll be back later. ;)

For those that want the extension, what are you willing to see Congress cut to pay for it? We have got to quit spending beyond are means. Goes for the govt. as well as people.

99<104. How is a 3% increase in taxes "telling people how to spend their money"?

its more like a ten percent increase in taxes. a 3% increase of the tax rate is much more than a 3 percent increase in the taxes

most of those in the top 2% aren't using much if anything of the direct programs funded by the income tax. we need to stop spending on stuff that is not clearly constitutional
