MP stripped of his Parliamentary seat by court

Yeah, you have a right to be blatantly lied to in your media and politics! Yeah, go America, #1! :2party:

Well, not being a moron, I can tell when it's happening. If you need help, then that's your deal.

Which explains the constant lying American media, politicians and in general everyone are doing on a daily basis. The truth has become a premium in the US.. and a rarity

It will be interesting to see whether turnabout is fair play and those who have called Tony Blair a liar are all brought to justice.

This appears to be another fine example of selective outrage.

Right, PeteEU.

Everyone in the United States lies and everyone in Europe tells the truth.

It's always easier to have official opinions where the truth is never in doubt,

Actually Tony Blair is a liar

That is not what he was saying now was it. Pete supported the idea of having the politician removed from office as he won based on documented lies and libel. Obvisously a lieing european politician

This is a good law

The people, we the electorate cannot recall a MP if they have been found to be lying.
That power is with the court and if there is sufficient evidence. They will be stripped of their seat and the people will have another say.

The constituents deserve a representative who didn't lie and play the race card to win and they will get their say. I have nothing but support for the Judges decision.

That power has been removed from the people and given to the courts seems to have gone over the heads of many of these posters. Now, with the courts vetting the peoples electoral decisions, we'll watch with some interest how this effects Britain over the long term.

Right now some they like the decision because their guy won. However who the courts favour the next time some politician "lies" or appears to have lied, their responses might be quite different.

Quite a remarkable transition of power from the people to the courts and, so far, no one appears too upset about this precedent. I think we can expect more decisions along these lines, with the court examining all election winners to see whether any lies were told. How long before party politics enter these decisions I wonder?

Not sure what post you're referring to but here's what PeteEU said in the post i was referring

So all i have here is your unfounded accusation then?

You know you can be banned from running for public office for three years for those kind of statements?

Unfounded?

All the claims he made about Iraq were false now werent they? Read the Downing Street Memo

I would also only be banned from running for public office if I used lies and libel to influence an election. Not a bad thing in my opinion

You are making an unproven claim that the man is a liar. You should be hauled before the courts, and this case under discussion sets the precedent. You will have to prove to the courts that you are right, and you obviously haven't done that. Ergo, no political campaigns for you for three years

Do you get the point?

They would have to prove that I was liar about Blair being a Liar first now would they not

You really have no idea what the courts might decide. Did he believe what he said was true at the time? Are there others involved?

The political and judicial systems will now become plugged with claims by politicians that their opponents "lied", as though the electorate can't discern the differences themselves and make their own mistakes.

This is a horrific precedent and will lead to massive abuse over the coming years. It's another nail in John Bull's coffin.

Libel isn't mentioned in the Constitution.

Ah. Up with the Ministry of Truth, eh?

Idiotic statement. No wonder US elections are such a mess since the people accept the way they are run... lies and counter lies. Just think, the US use to be the becaon of truth, fairness and democracy.. now it is another banana republic in many ways, where the truth is defined by those with most power/money.

The truth is defined by the audience. That's how it should stay.

You don't get to the truth by letting the government declare what it is.

And as for "used to bes," it was the Europeans who came up with that idea. Yeah, I guess we are backwards, being about the only place left which actually takes the principles of the Enlightenment seriously. Silly old ideas.

HELL no.. the truth is the truth. It is your attitude that have lead to the worst atrocities in human history, because the "audience" denied the truth or facts, and took it out on others.

Er.. the government aint doing anything. The law in question has been on the books for a century and rarely used since the burden of proof is quite high. And the law does not dictate what the truth is, since the truth dictates that, and that has nothing to do with the government.

Point is the truth itself can hold up to scrutiny if the process is fair.

Hm sorry dont understand what you are trying to say here.

So a guy is legally stripped of his position for "lying," pursuant to a law, and that has "nothing to do with the government." :lamo

This is in no way surprising.

But now truth will be defined by the courts, in whom you appear to have a great deal of trust. The people's selection will not count. The courts will look at a single issue in determining the outcome of an election and the people's choice be damned.

I can hear the wheels grinding already as to which political party will control the Courts and then, thusly, The Truth!

Opinions will now also be based on The Truth and The Truth, in this case, will surely not set you free.
