Lula didn't. Dilma Roussef (as far as I know) hasn't. If by "leftist politicians" you mean Hugo Chavez, then you'd be correct.

This presumes that all politics everywhere in the world revolves around the United States, which is just not true. And it also presumes that people are too stupid to vote according to the issues that are actually affecting them in the here and now.

50% higher IS pretty massive. And in any case, the US has a higher level of wealth overall so it's not a problem to the same degree. There is nowhere in the poorest areas of the United States that looks anything like what you'd see in a Brazilian favela.

Dilma Rousseff was Hugo Chavez's favorite candidate. That's not a good sign at all for Brazil. Rousseff was a blatant guerrilla, but the Brazilian people were well aware of that, when they elected her. So, they'll have what they asked for. That's democracy after all, isn't it?

The reason that South America tends to be left-wing nowadays is very simple indeed, but in my opinion it’s not just the HUGE amount of wealth disparity that exists. It has to be with the corrupted people who have ruled South American countries like Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil, and Argentina among a few more. It doesn’t matter the political definition of those thieves. They took advantage of their countries and sank our people in misery. When these “new” Socialists offered to destroy those former corrupts. We believe them, but the reality is that they are as much as corrupt as the others were, and some former corrupts are still working with these new regimes (from right-wings to Socialists over night)

They just changed their name from neoliberals to neo-socialists and not necessarily with new people.
They are fooling poor people telling them that they’re fighting poorness. That’s a flat lie.

Let’s hope for the best. Lula was not as commanded as the other Presidents are by Chavez.
