Poll: Most US troops OK with gays in the military

And your story about the Marines being against gays serving was pulled from where?

Here you go DD.. Read it and weep.............

Marines Chief Warns Most Are Uncomfortable Serving With Openly Gay Troops - FoxNews.com

WASHINGTON -- As many as 95 percent of Marines would be uncomfortable serving alongside openly gay troops, the retiring commandant of the Marine Corps told Fox News in an exclusive interview.Gen. James Conway told Fox News' Jennifer Griffin that a majority of his men and women think a repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy barring gays from serving openly will be problematic, so he has to believe that, too.

"When we take a survey of our Marines, by and large, they say that they are concerned that it will cause potential problems with regard to their order and discipline -- that it will impact their sense of unit cohesion," Conway said.

He never said the bolded part. Here is his quote:

Nowhere that I can find does he give a figure. You can of course document where he said "90 to 95 %, since you claimed it.

This is my favorite part...

Conway says these few gays don't cause a problem now because their homosexuality is not known publicly. But he said if their sexuality does become public, "90 to 95 percent of the Marines" he has informally surveyed are concerned about the consequences. Conway cited impromptu surveys he has conducted by a "show of hands" among Marines at town hall style meetings.

Now NP, do you want to take a guess why a show of hands at an open meeting in front of one of the leading commanding officers might not be the best ways to take a survey?

Names are not put on the surveys...

I wonder where Disney Dude and Redress are hiding today? They wanted proof on the Marines feelings on DADT and then the silence is deafning....I believe and apology is in order.....:)

Hey Navy, if you look at the bottom of the page, you will see a list of names of who is online. Where I have been today is sleeping, then taking care of dogs and picking up the house. Just because some one does not reply to your post when they are not online at the board does not mean they are ducking you.

I stand corrected Navy, he did say it. It also seems highly likely based on the OP that his guess was wrong.

Just pulling your chain a little Redress No offense......Really looking forward to DD's response.........He is usually right behind me when I post something...........

Until the Pentagon study is presented to congress on Dec 1, it would be difficult to get anything through the senate.

That would make sense. Do you think the Pentagon will be against it or for it?

As I understand it, that is not the purpose of the study. It was to find out what was needed to make the change so that a process can be set up to make it as little disruptive as possible, to find out what concerns of the people in the military are so they can be addressed, and things like that.

If this story about the survey is correct, that just makes it easier for congress to act. They, not the Pentagon or DoD will make the decision.

This is true, but do you think Congress would vote against the will of the Pentagon? If this is not resolved by January do you think a most likely Republican house will still vote to repeal DADT? I'm not sure Congress has to act because it has been ruled unconstitutional in court.

Yes, but I doubt very much that the Pentagon is going to advicve against the will of the COmmander in Chief.

I doubt it will be done before the end of the year, but I am still pretty sure it will get done next year. With the court case ruling against DADT, strong public support of repeal and most people in the military favoring repeal, I think it will get enough republican votes to pass.

I'm not sure Congress has to act because it has been ruled unconstitutional in court.

That would be the slow way, though it is quite possible the courts will rid us of DADT if Congress does not.

Being a retired vet myself whom served in a combat line unit, I can say without a doubt the combat troops will have a huge problem with it.

I believe--inittialy at least--that gays will be barred from enlisting in combat arms MOS's.

I think it's time that we repeal DADT. I don't know why there is a holdup.

There are alotta particulars that have to be worked out. The government isn't going to be able to just snap it's fingers and the ban on gays just go away.

Well no, they have to pass a bill, then DADT goes away. A little more complex than snapping fingers, but not much.

It's not going to be that simple. There are issues within the military that have to be taken into consideration. Like it, or not, that's the way it is.

If it were as simple as you say, then it would have already been done.

What's deafening Navy is your silence regarding the fact that the pentagon study says that the vast majority of military personnel have no problem with gays serving side by side with them, sleeping side by side with them...and GASP....showering side by side with them.

The fact that some old retiring guy takes a show of hands is hardly indicative of the results of the actual study.

Face it old man....your generation of intolerance and hatred is dying out. Its a new day in America and America is finally growing up and recognizing that bigotry and hatred are not values that America stands for.

Face it liberal, we can say the same thing about liberalism, no? Americans are kicking them to the curb in record numbers so it must mean that the generation of liberalism is dead and America will no longer have to deal with the hypocrisy and intolerance that accompanies it. Its a new and wonderful day that the diease of liberalism is dying a slow death in America.

LOL of course America is tired of liberals. They've been in charge for a full 2 years, and the country isn't perfect yet. So now, the general mass of sheep that comprise the majority of this country are lloking to the grass on the other side, convinced it's greener. In a few years, when the right has failed to fix things, they'll swing back the other day. BTW, what a laugh for a Republican to throw out the words "intolerance" and "hypocrisy"; the right wing in the last 2 years have become so partisan (not to mention completely indifferent to the truth) that it borders on treason.

Question for you, it seems you're in favor of gays in the military. I'm trying to have a debate with a thinking liberal regarding this; I tried starting my own post but didn't get many bites, the only one I did avoided (probably unintentionally) the actual question and gave generic reasons why gays should be allowed to serve.
How can we not view allowing gays to serve as special treatment? You mention that soldiers aer OK with gays showering and bunking with them, which is fine and dandy. However, we do not allow straight soldiers to bunk or shower with members of the opposite sex, i.e. the objects of their sexual attraction. Why, then, would it be ok to allow gays to do so?

Gays men are not women and gay women are not men. This is a large, unsubtle distinction.

However, you won't be able to force straight soldiers to billet with gay soldiers and vice versa.

Sure you can. No law against it, and it is happening now.
