U.N. to appoint space ambassador to greet alien visitors

the only thing Laila seems certain of is her hatred of the human race.

How? I haven't exactly lied about human's actions and history. Slavery has happened, genocides have happened and so has intolerance. Still goes on in all corners of the world.

Humans at times are a very intolerant race, I mean. Look at US's own history. How made decades has it been since blacks got the right to vote after how many years of segregation and slavery?
US is just one example. Look at Africa, ME.
And if that is how we treat fellow humans, who knows what we'd do to something we don't even consider human. We're not a cuddly race that would welcome non humans with open arms, please. We'd sooner lock 'em up in a cage and experiment on them imho.

It is very naive and idealistic to assume humans have changed to the point where we wouldn't do it anymore. When pushed, humans are capable of alot.

So... should we start marking off the borders for District 9 now, or later?

So your assumption is based on the wrongs you perceive from the past? I am not saying that you are entirely wrong, just very callous against humanity.

I think it is more logical than they'd want to come over just to see how it is in Earth. If they are another intelligent race, sure they'd want to explore, expand their knowledge.
But assuming they were like humans, one must take into consideration they are also after new resources and territory.

No one said anything is sure, this is all speculation. If Hawkins isn't 100% certain, no way in hell I am. But I'd take his speculation over anyone elses.

Trying to apply human behavioral concepts to aliens is a tough exercise in the first place. I mean, they could be more like an ant colony, placing no particular value on individual lives and seeking only what's best for the collective. Or maybe they're horrendously xenophobic because their religion teaches them that all other life is created by their version of the devil, and thus must be exterminated in the name of their creator. Or maybe humans are just really, really tasty. There's no reason to assume they'd be somehow enlightened or peaceful.

It takes a tremendous amount of energy to pull resources in large quantities off the surface of a planet. It would be way easier to get the same resources elsewhere in the universe or even in this solar system. They'd only come to our planet if they wanted the planet itself.

Or may

Care to share why? Because of this decision?

You do know that probably every first-world country on Earth probably has a similar post and contingency plans for such an event, right?

So you have no problem with your tax money going for this person to sit in that office and do nothing?

The UN is useless and full of perverts and liars

I would have a problem with that, but this isn't what's happening. It's some guy who already has a UN job who has been granted this extra "responsibility."
Why the hell would you assume this was her only job?

I've got the perfect candidate for the job - Jerry Brown.

Ross Perot-rumor had it he was the Ferengi Alliance's ambassador to earth anyway

Why couldn't they be like we would be on space travel, I reckon they'd be primarily interested in studying us, just as we would them.

Yeah the would study us…deciding whether we would be better grilled or fried.

so he must be over paid if he can take more duties. This is as credible as the oil for food scam they had with Saddam

I won't bother explaining for the 10th time why the UN is not meant to be suprainternational enforcement body; people who bash the UN for its inaction never seem to listen to the basic facts of what the organization was made for, so there is no point in wasting my time on them anymore.

As for the OP... my guess for alien contact would be that it would happen behind closed doors first, if it hasn't already. The other thing to remember is that making contact with aliens could represent a major strategic advantage if they are willing to collaborate, and not a single world superpower would want to share that with anyone. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up fighting amongst ourselves while clamoring to be the first to hear about the secrets of alien technology. I personally believe that the major world governments are already in the know, but there is too much power to be lost by admitting to everyone that we're not alone.

I agree with Hawking though. Our radio and t.v. signals are already reaching the edge of our spacial sector so they could already be detected. Nothing quite compares though to the foolishness of sending the Voyager space probe in the 70's which contained a map and recording telling them where we are, and with the explicit invitation to come visit us. No one knows what happened to that probe by the way. It reached the Kuiper belt after an unnatural deceleration that no one could explain, and then stopped broadcasting. It's also foolish for SETI to be sending signals into space for the express purpose of making contact.

The only weapon we have on this planet that could fight an advanced alien society would be nukes, and using them would blow us up along with them. We simply have no security preparations for an alien visit. It's illogical to appoint an ambassador to aliens without also appointing a committee to address what we would do in the event of an alien invasion.

Hopefully aliens are free market anarcho-capitalist that would just stop by to buy some wares, maybe trade it for some knowledge on how to build a cool space station or something like Deep Space Nine.

There are two Voyager probes, both still functioning, though Two's data is currently garbled due to a memory glitch which they are working on. SETI is a passive receiver, not a broadcaster.

Oops, they fixed it.

I hope Aliens don't come in my lifetime, They would be so far technologically advanced they could squash all of us like a little bug.
