BBC News - US church defiant despite condemnation of Koran burning

Is someone trying to muscle in on the Westboro BC's territory? I'm sure US troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan will be delighted people are making such good use of the freedom of speech they are trying to defend with their lives.

Can or should anything be done to stop this calculated attempt to stir up trouble? Is this like calling 'fire!' in a packed theatre? Or is free speech just too precious?

Nothing can, nor should be done about this legally. Though we all should point and laugh at the irony, their ignorance, and condemn their hatred.

Pointing and laughing won't be what the troops in Afghanistan are doing when angry mobs take to the street.

Of course, those angry mobs ought to appreciate the value of free speech, but they don't because they have their own version of Pastor Terry Jones organising International Burn An American Flag Days for many years now.

This is a bit like sticking your fingers in a light socket and expecting the electricity to respect the fact that you can do what the hell you like in your own home.

Nothing should be done. If those people in the middle east can burn Americans flags, bibles and all sorts of other **** that Americans and other people find find offensive then they have no room to bitch about someone burning a Koran. So I do not think Americans should tip toe when it comes to muslims being offended. So **** those terrorists. If some terrorists want to get all riled up then they will make easy targets for our troops to spot. I think the preacher should burn those Korans out of principle to show the terrorist scum in the middle east we do not give a ****. A the same if someone wanted to burn some bibles I hope he does not complains and I hope the same people pissing and moaning about muslims being offended over koran burnings will do the same if someone proposes a bible burn.

"We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam."

... by insulting and showing your intolerance to the vast, vast majority of Islam that is not radical.

They better plant some trees to offset the carbon emissions of the burning Korans.

I don't care for what the church is doing, but part of being in the military in the US is standing up for our freedoms. I think what the church is doing is ****ty, but they are free to do it under our constitution, and that is what soldiers, in the long run, are fighting for, our rights under that constitution.

It's ok for Muslims to insult Americans.

The shoe is on the other foot, now. How do ya'll like it?

The article mentioned the church having only 50 members. Looks like they are having a membership drive to me.

There has to be more Georgians married to cousins than that.

Yes, I clearly said it was 'OK'...

So to protest intolerance, you suggest displaying intolerance as the best route?

The Pastor (who happens to be a real idiot [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_i0J7LH0CA]), said he prayed before making his mind on going through with this ridiculous event. I wonder if he thought of Luke 31:

Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Obviously not.

I think the pastor already knows that the muslims in the middle east burn bibles, American flags and other things that are offensive to Americans who are Christians. Thats probably one of the reasons he is burning korans, because the muslims are doing to others what they want others to do them.

And then so is he, so by his actions, according to your logic, he is encouraging and promoting bible and flag burning, 'cause he obviously enjoys it.

That makes no sense and does not follow any logic. It is not about what the Muslims want done to them. The Pastor is a Christian, and as a Christian, he should "do to others as he would have them to do him". Or does the Pastor only follow some of Jesus' teachings?

Don't muslims in the middle east already burn bibles, American flags and other things Americans might find offensive?

Yep, and by his actions, the Pastor is saying that he wants it done to him as much as they want it done to them.

It does if you view "Do to others as you would have them do to you." as a two way street.

It is not about what the Muslims want done to them.

Has he stated all his reasons why he is burning the korans? Then how do you know what its all about?

Maybe he views the do unto others[/QUOTE]

Don't atheist and liberal Christians(fake Christians) like to play the that's your interpretation of the bible game and don't you all like to say its a book of fairy tales? So why do you right now give a **** what the bible says?

Muslims in the middle east would do those things regardless who burned korans. I just hope that pastor calls all the whiners a bunch of hypocrites while they are pissing and moaning over the korans being burned.

The pastor is as much a dickhead as the people that do it in the ME, there is no way he could even try and claim the moral high ground you seem to be putting him on.

Yep, some do.

and we should show our disgust by being just like them!

One little teenie, weenie church in nowhere, USA and the world turns against one old pastor!!!!! What cowards Americans are. We watch beheadings and flag burnings and simply go about our business as ususal. It is his and our right to burn any book ever written. HE is not killing anyone contrary to everyone is saying. God bless this guy, I'll send money to his church. Burn radical Islam and all its' followers!!

lol!

I'll throw in my 2 cents at this point.

I support this churches right to do this.

But I do find it a little hypocritical...

Did Jesus not say... Turn the other cheek?

I personally think anyone who finds the burning of a book to be offensive, is a bit overly sensitive. And yes I do understand for those that do get offended...

This quote MIGHT be a stretch in this circumstance but...

"It is there, where they burn books, that eventually they burn people."

Burn a book, a flag, whatever you want. It's a free country. But before you do, really ask yourself... why?

I support the church's right to do this. But it's wrong, and as a Christian I am appalled. This place claims that they want to reach people for Jesus. How is offending Muslims going to do that? Yesterday on my way to work the Christian radio station I was listening to condemned what this church was planning to do. However, the irony is that the Afghanis, in pre-protest of a potential Koran burning, burned US flags and an effigy of the pastor of the church. Honestly I think the barbarians in Afghanistan and the Middle East need a swat in the mouth and realize that they are not immune to protest and we will not tolerate their violent backwards way of thinking.

Of course he has the right to do it, but having the right to do it isn't the same thing as being allowed to do it. This refers back to two different debates of recent months, one where we discussed natural rights. Many argued that rights only exist when society permits them. The other discussed free speech, in which several posters pointed out that the right to call 'fire' in a crowded cinema is NOT what the right of free speech is all about. Oh, and I remember a third, discussing wikileaks of info that might help America's enemies.

  • Is this not the assumption of a conditional right despite its abhorrent nature to everyone?
  • Isn't it the use of that right to cause panic, unrest and violence just for the sake of it?
  • And is it not putting US forces in even greater danger by turning the Afghans, Iraqis etc. into even more anti-American mobs than they are at present, hence acting as a recruiting sergeant for the Islamists?

Its perfectly legal its just in poor taste and nothing is accomplished just by pissing people off. And what about Muslim Americans, do those millions of people just not fit well into your absolute black and white world? Or the thousands of Muslim servicemen?
