Repaving roads, which I see all over the country is not adding much value to our infrastructure. The Chinese used part of their stimulus to add 700 miles of high speed rail. Now that helps giving a country a long term economic advantage.

If there was real talk about high speed rail, airports, bridges that need fixing the cost if people will be honest is at least a trillion dollars. The amount Obama is talking about can only generate make work B.S. projects, not real infrastructure investments.

I too thought high speed rail would be a good investment but after reading a couple articles it appears it may not be worth the costs. I noticed though that part of infrastructure was revamping ATC software which was said to be a huge deal and would lessen flight delays. I mean infrastructure isn't just confined to highways and interstates.

Bravo! :applaud Really guy's, take a bow. :doh Once again no one in here has said that the country's infrastructure isn't in need of updating, and repair. However, You liberals just had some $787 Billion dollars to achieve that very thing for the past 18 + months, and all we heard leading up to it was how it was going to "put America to work", "Keep unemployment below 8%", "bring America into the 21st century".....etc.

Now we need more, for "shovel ready jobs" again? Fool me once.....:failpail: You liberals must really believe that American's are just butt stupid. We don't want higher taxes on those that create the jobs, we don't want American's taking part time jobs that are being counted 3 times, we don't want sunshine blown up our pant legs while we can see the reports saying exactly the opposite of what Obama says, and come this November you guy's are gonna see WE DON'T WANT LIBERALS IN CHARGE ANYMORE!!!!!! :moody

So far, it looks like the current administration is making the right moves. The only problem is that it should be bigger steps.

Not all Americans are stupid, just those who get their education from the likes of Beck and Limbaugh.
BTW, this "liberal" always votes republican on the federal level, and most of the time on local level.
That may change. If the GOP can't select a viable candidate, I will just stay home on election day.
Twice the back room boys have selected wrong, once when it chose Bush over McCain, and again when it chose McCain over anybody. McCain has lost touch with reality, as has most of the party backers.
If you understood economics, you would know that it is consumers who create jobs, not whoever you are thinking of. No business is going to hire people to fill jobs that don't exist, and those jobs won't exist until we consumers start spending our money. The USA can't exist economically with only service type jobs. Wall Street, Madison Ave. and the financial district can shuffle papers all day long, and it won't create one job....
We need useful products, and those products must be manufactured LOCALLY, not overseas just because it is a bit cheaper....
BTW, when I say OUR money, that isn't just taxpayer money, too many people, and too many companies, who HAVE money are afraid of spending it. I don't get that....
Where is the confidence in the American Economy that the Wall Streeters claim to have?

Ok, let's see....So you got a special interest group that fed at the trough of the first stimulus wanting more funds....Big surprize....I thought the days of special interest pork were over with this one? Guess not. And the second article from USA Today, is an example of cheer leading journalism citing 75% of economists (naming none) and of the two they did name, David Bernson is clearly an Obama hack. Former VP at Fannie Mae, and political contributions to democrat exclusively in 2008 from what I gather.

So hey, I am not telling you what to believe here, but if you really want to fall for the line that Obama and team has improved the economy, when it is clear that they are playing to special interests like Unions, and political friends, then that is on you. Nothing has changed in DC, just who's doing the lying.

Finally, J-mac got something right....nothing has changed in DC, just who is doing the lying. 2 years ago, it was the GOP....right?:2razz:

Damned straight Bill. I didn't see it then, I was wrong. But today my eyes are clear. I am still a conservative, but I pay more attention to what politicians actions are now than I did then.

And the current crop sucks.

you're easy to please

the president came out on monday with his newest proposal which he wasn't even thinking about a full week ago

he wants another stimulus, he wants hi speed rail in wisconsin (read up on that project, i challenge you)

fine

except---he doesn't have a bill, he doesn't have a legislative base, he doesn't have a vote, he doesn't have the votes, he doesn't have time

Obama assails GOP, promotes new jobs program - Yahoo! News

all he's got is his teleprompter and his desperate political needs

ie, FLAIL

55% Oppose Second Economic Stimulus Plan - Rasmussen Reports™

party on!

all but the most dogmatic doctrinaires can see the suit is empty, yes

it's all thru the msm, they're pretty much disgusted

coverage of his "economic plan" yesterday was close to 100% cynical

party on, progressives, rapidly oer the precipice

Maybe we need some herbicides and pesticides sprayed over D.C.? Kill all the diseased crop, and start over with a bunch of amateur liars...

I thought he hadn't spent much of the stimulus yet? Is it all gone? Why can't the $50 billion come from there?

Nah, they're immune to it. What we need is less central government, and more accountability by the people.

I think some tax breaks for big business will be repealed, to pay for the stimulus package....

Oh, goody. Now they'll have to lay off even more people. I guess the more co-dependent Americans that Obama can create, the better.

Many large companies didn't HAVE TO, they just did. Surely you saw some of that in years past? Before the recession? I did, about every 5 years at the last company I worked for. Mostly they were trying to move the older employees out by offering enhanced severance packages. I got 9 months salary and a piddling retirement. Of course, being as paranoid as I am about money, that retirement is just one little egg in my retirement basket.
Lots of companies have lots of cash on hand, and they aren't hiring. It would make no sense to hire people before you need them, and that hasn't been the case yet. We need consumers, and hopefully those of us with money to spare will start spending it, creating more jobs in the process. Consumerism has created more jobs than tax breaks ever will...

I'm disappointed with the low quality of posts in this thread. This is an important subject, and merits more than "those Democrats are skanks. I'm votin' for Sarah Palin!"

America is heading into a depression which will be complicated by environmental tragedies. A major stimulus is needed NOT to help the economy grow (which it will never do, and shouldn't be allowed to do), but TO KEEP AMERICANS FED AND HOUSED.

This will require the largest transfer of wealth in American history, from private hands to public works projects. And rather than building highways and airports, it has to be all about downsizing America's resource needs. This can be done by investing in rail, water transport, high density low-rise housing in tight urban areas, the return of small family farms.... etc.

It will cost the rich their current lives of boundless consumption. But without this kind of change, America - and perhaps the world - is finished.

Reducing an issue of this kind of seriousness to partisan soundbites about your favorite political football team (red or blue) demonstrates the need to invest in education as well.

Mind you, I'm aware that cuts to education have been part of the way the rich have taken from the poor as well.

Exactly. And welcome aboard.

I wish I could say thank you more than once. Excellent post.

Trotsky couldn't have said it better himself.

American corporations are sitting on a ton of cash. To such an extent, the basic "tax cuts will spur demand" has not a leg to stand on. Non financial companies are sitting an excess of $1.5 trillion. Public works projects do not seem so bad now do they?
