Cold empties Bolivian rivers of fish

Eeesh! It does happen, catfish are pretty tough too. I dunno, that had to be one hell of a swing though and I think the "climate scientists" are taking a huge leap in the AGW direction instead of trying to figure out why the temperature swing happened and if it has cyclical or historical relevance.

I am no climate scientist but it seems that the jet stream can cause these wild weather fluctuations. To be honest though the following article did not directly blame global warming for the change in the jet stream, rather the influence of recent re-awoken solar activity.

Oh man, that cracked me up, seriously.

Then you obviously do not understand the basic premise of climate change - could you please explain what you THINK it might be (she says respectfully fully expecting to be either ignored or insulted in return)

I'd waste my time I bet explaining that for ten years I was an AerographersMate in the US Navy, so my understanding of Meteorological processes is as solid as they come.

How about: Climate Changes.

That's it. You want to know why? Variations in the Earth's Orbit, output from the Sun those at the two BIGGIES, after that comes a wide array of gases and particulate matter in the air. Man's impact destabilizing the climate? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

No, I was thinking more about the (mis) concept that "global warming" means that everywhere is getting hotter all the time.

Me personally? I do not listed to what people claim as their "qualifications" as I have no way of verifying if you are what you say or some precocious 12 year old with Mummy's computer

So, let us address the the orbital change idea - have you any proof that that is currently influencing the climate

I seem to remember you saying you were some kind of weather expert in the Navy.

I guess you were exaggerating because any expert will tell you that all weather is a function of heat. And this was caused by man-made global warming.

Is this your way of coming clean and admitting that in all those old posts you really weren't the expert you pretended to be?

He did but since he is claiming to be an "aerographer's mate" he obviously does know know the difference between weather and climate

You sir, missed the question, so did your new friend.

Then you obviously do not understand the basic premise of climate change

I talked about Climatic Forces. Our Orbit, and the Sun's output > all other factors in Climate. Period.

Saying "all weather is the function of heat" is... silly. You missed a word.

TRANSFER.

But he didn't ask about weather, he asked about Climate.

Weather - study of short-term changes in the atmosphere.
Climate - the combination of weather elements that characterize an area over a long term. Takes into account seasonal changes as well as short term extreme fluctuations.

MOISTURE

Learn something today, and make it not a waste

yes but the whole thing about "tipping points" seems to have passed you by - which is really the difference between a meterologist and a climatologist - the latter has studied paleoclimatology.

Atmospheric composition I woud suggest is an even bigger influence than either solar output or orbit

Oddly, in most of his GW / Environment posts, he confuses them all the time.

You'd think someone with that type of training wouldn't be taken in so easily by the partisan hackery and propaganda on this issue. I mean, even the untrained novice can see right through the likes of Jim Inhof.

At least he had the courage to post this in the first place. Maybe he is coming around.

This is what amuses and appalls me - the same people who were frothing at the mouth over the leaked emails swallow whole things like the "Oregon Petition" which is such an obvious fraud

Oregon Petition = Dentists, Chiropractors, and former weather men.

Scientific American did a piece on one of those 'Petitions'. They took a sampling of 200 names and the results were very humorous. My Congressman still has Fred Seitz's petition listed on his website. I written him asking him to take it down, but no go.

It is not an ecological disaster. The Earth wants to do this. Its not like we dumped tomato sauce in there. It is the Earth doing what it needs to do.

the earth is not sentient, it obeys the laws of physics, and thus physics ****ed over the fish, this could lead to any number of scenarios that could kill the river life, and only be able to recover in the long term.

Add to that the cherry picking of data and quotes, the use and referencing to the same sixty or so names (out of tens of thousands worldwide) IF there is any referencing.

The sad part is that most people are scientifically illiterate and genuinely do not know the difference between a blog and a research paper

You know, when someone comes out with a statistic about how hot a certain place has gotten hotter, the deniers will be the first to jump in and shout, "Climate is not weather!!" And yet... the second they find an instance of a place being colder than normal, they think they've struck gold.

Gotta love the double standard.

Wow, Vicchio actually posted a Global Warming story.

There's hope for him, yet...
He sure did.
With such extreme climatic events potentially becoming more common due to climate change, scientists are hurrying to coordinate research into the impact, and how quickly the ecosystem is likely to recover.

My favourite is mixing local with global

But I have discovered a new phenomena - underpinning the idea of a scientific conspiracy is the core concept that all the climatologists in the world number about 50 and Al Gore has the lot chained to a workbench in his cellar wiring Igor up to the lightning rods.

When you point out that the Department of labour in the US alone counts over 2 million scientists and engineers it sort of kills the old conspiracy theories

Actually, can you please show where anyone has "struck gold"? The warmers were the ones tying this to "AGW", i just find it a fascinating weather event. And a sad one.

Doesn't stop these people from perpetuating them though.

AGW is politics, not science. Climate ALWAYS CHANGES.

Tell me, what is the "perfect earth climate"? You can't answer that, I can't, no one can. It doesn't exist, it CAN'T exist. We might pass through an optimal from time to time, maybe 100 years, maybe 1000, hell we might sit there for 1,000,000 years! But it will change. No matter if we're driving cars or swinging in the trees wondering if those caves would be safe.

All the "answers" to "Global Warming" revolve around the notion that mans MASSIVE pollution of Mother Earth can be reversed to save us, if we just cut back, 10%, 50%, if we just give up that which makes our lives so much better. Oh but those pushing such non-sense don't abide by their own demands. algore anyone? That alone should let you in on the big secret, the mans made MINT off the gig, yet his lifestyle is far more damaging then some small communities! (according to AGW theory atleast).

It's silly nonsense to believe WE are causing the Earth to "heat up" and even dumber to think WE can save her by lowering our standard of living.

That's what I got out of this article. Based-on many previous debates, my gut tells me the Mr Vicchio posted this article because he thinks this dispels the Global Warming theory. After reading the article, I feel the opposite. For many years we have been warned of extreme, freaky, and unique weather patterns/activity, and this could very well be one of them. A shame of the Bolivian people... this will hurt them for years to come, I would think.

I'm waiting for the link to be made to Hugo Chavez; it must surely be his fault.

That damn global warming!

What's really telling is even with record lows in both hemispheres in regional areas the Global averages are still on the rise.

Gee i guess that's why they call it Global Warming.

But hey I know you have a political agenda and damn the facts so carry on.

But I can answer that - the optimal climate is the one that brings the monsoon to Asia every year, that allows California to be the breadbasket of the USA, that fills the Murray Darling river system here in Australia to allow us to grow enough to feed not just us but the rest of the world. It is about NOT suffering "droughts and flooding rains" it is about NOT suffering more intense cyclones and tornadoes

See this is not about city dwellers turning up the air con it is about feeding the world.

So, just because Billy doesn't have to clean HIS room you don't have to clean yours? did your mother let you get away with that?

83 million barrels of oil per day.

That is the current level of consumption for this planet - it has to do something to the atmosphere - not to mention all the other problems it brings. Would be nice to cut that back don't you think?
