McCain wins senate primary in Arizona

Unfortunately, the man running against McCain was bat **** crazy. Where in the hell are the great thinkers in the GOP when you need them. Whatever happened to the William F. Buckleys of the party? They have gone the way of the dodo bird, and have been replaced by nutters.

You should vote Democrat Dan, the GOP's just too crazy for you. Too extreme, no good smart candidates or thinkers. It's all over for the GOP. Or maybe you could vote Libertarian, anything but vote GOP. They just aren't good enough for you. Maybe they'll see the light and elect nothing but Arlen Specter and Olympia Snowe type candidates in 2012! Then you could vote for them again!

Hopefully the former.... his biggest mistake, however, was plucking Gov. Sarah Palin from obscurity in Alaska

That was his best moment in 2008, his worst was rushing back to DC and trying to help broker a Big Gov't solution. That's what killed him.

If you were a great thinker, would you like to get into the cesspool of D.C. politics in 2010?

Sarah Palin is one of the WORST things in the GOP right now... her and her ilk make me glad I left the party...

really? the reason i like dana is that he's HONEST. to me, he is one of the few real conservatives on this board. the rest? meh.....not so much.

Horrible Outcome.

The biggest Rino in Congress gets another term.

What evidence do you have of this claim?

hey, there.... you don't think I am a real conservative? just because I am not one of the neocon yahoos that populate this board here...

You owe me a mouthful of tea. That was hysterical

Exactly WHAT is wrong with her? I'm just curious cause I read stuff like this and yet the answers are always so... interesting.

I think Dan should have that as his sig myself "The liberals think I'm a real conservative".

Giggle!

So, which of the following do you consider a "real conservative"

JC Watts
Susan Collins
Mark Rubio

I am not going to personally insult her as some have because that is not my style. I just think that she has further dumbed down political discourse in the US -- and I wasn't sure that was even possible... and yes, BOTH sides are to blame for this... I don't find her to be very intelligent or astute about many things, either...

How can he be "the biggest Rino in Congress" when he's not even close to being the furthest left Republican? All 3 New England Senators are to his left, and by a pretty large margin.

I'm not even sure why he's supposed to be a RINO in the first place. Does any Republican who has any moderate positions on anything now qualify as RINO material? If anything he's center-right, or even to the right of that, not moderate.
He even had the guts to vote against Medicare Part D and not sponsor a single earmark. That's being more fiscally conservative than pretty much every other Republican in Congress.

That said, he's been in Congress way too long and is starting to lose it. His positions now change practically daily and nothing he says makes much sense anymore. That is why he should have lost the primary, if a good candidate had run against him. Unfortunately all he got was Hayworth, who was not a good candidate by any standards.

Glad McCain won. A voice of reason has actually survived in the Republican. Radicals in BOTH parties have taken a hatchet job to reasonable voices. However, as long as there are McCains and Liebermans around, we all still have hope...

Please tell me this is a joke. Both men are responsible for the massive expansion of government.

Got it, she "sounds dumb" and the media made her sound worse. Have you ever... read her position on things? She's not the dolt you think she is. Is she perfect? HELL NO. But people like you make me sad, style matters more then substance for you.

You and I have our disagreements, but to me, you are the real deal. :)

Oh boy, a strong possibility of another term for Senator "I don't know how to use a computer but I'll sponsor bills drastically altering the nature of the internet anyway" McCain!

I think this nickname might be a bit long.

Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act ("McCain-Kennedy Bill", S. 1033) was an immigration reform bill introduced in the United States Senate on May 12, 2005 by Senators John McCain and Ted Kennedy. It was the first of its kind since the early 2000s in incorporating legalization, guest worker programs, and border enforcement components. As United States immigration debate unfolded in Congress and in the field during 2005 and 2006, the bill became a landmark legislation that was often referenced by most parties of the debate to indicate support or opposition to a certain kind of immigration reform that incorporated the three components. The bill was never voted on in the Senate. The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 and the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 are two additional compromises based on the original McCain-Kennedy bill.

But now, the onetime champion of comprehensive immigration reform appears nowhere near ready to rejoin Democrats in the fight, which left him alienated from his party and feeling abandoned by Hispanic voters during the bruising 2008 presidential election.

Not a chance, McCain said, when asked about the expectations of immigration advocates that he might once again take up the cause.

"Really? I'm certainly happy to hear that, since they have been unrelenting in their criticism of me," McCain said sharply. "I will maintain my position that we secure the border first, which is a position that I've had for the last three years."

Immigration-reform advocates miss John McCain

In 2005 John wanted to give citizenship to 20,000,000 illegal aliens.

In 2010 John looks at the polls and wants to build a fence.

I wonder what he'll want to do in 2011.

McCain has been a RINO for years. He runs to the right at every election but when its over, he's back to the left.

Pro Amnesty. Now he's pretending he's not but everyone remembers that bill

Created gang of 13 thawarting republican issues, bills and judges and he did it imo only because Bush beat him in the primary

Against the Bush tax cuts in 01 and 03

Voted against Alito for the Supreme Court

Voted against free speech with his McCain Feingold bill which was overturned

Claims enhanced interrogations are "torture"

Against drilling in Alaska

He sided with Gore on global warming

He's the biggest RINO because he's done the most damage to republicans than any other Senator.

I have read her stands on many things... on some, I DO agree with her, but not on others, and regardless, I find a lack of depth in her thought processes...

Okay, so like I said, he is moderate on some issues.
I don't agree with him all the time, but on pretty much every issue you didn't list, he holds the same views as the rest of the party. That is, with some important exceptions, like his opposition to earmarks and Medicare Part D - which really should make him more favorable in fiscal conservatives' eyes than the rest of the party, balancing out his moderation elsewhere.

And he was never pro-amnesty, he was pro-guest worker program. It is disingenuous to act as if they are the same thing (though too many conservatives do so). And frankly, I would have favored that immigration bill he co-wrote.

That last line doesn't even make sense. More damage "to republicans" than any other Senator? What does that even mean? I thought "RINO" meant "Republican In Name Only", not "person who does damage to other Republicans". McCain isn't nearly as much as a RINO as actual RINOs like Charlie Crist or Arnold Schwartznager, not to mention other Senators like the two from Maine.

Anyways, he clearly didn't do enough damage to Republicans to stop them from nominating him for President last election. Thus proving that not all Republicans are of the label-purity, black-and-white-thinking type. Frankly, out of the choices given at the time, I myself had decided that McCain was probably the best candidate for the GOP.
