Nationwide meat recall announced

I usually get food poisoning at least once a year. It used to me more until I cut out mexican and LA oysters.

I've never gotten sick from gulf oysters, but then, I only eat them raw from October - March, when the water is colder and less hospitable to bacteria. The rest of the year, we eat them steamed, with butter & garlic. Yum.

People who have lots of children for religious reasons creep me out ... and thats coming from a Christian.

I completely agree. "Jesus wants you to have more babies, and god is anti-birth control." Could we be any more ridiculous as a species?

That's way too often. I've only had botulism twice in my life and I'll eat pretty much everything as long as it doesn't smell bad.

A good friend of mine got e-coli from raspberries grown in Mexico when we were both on a business trip to San Diego. He was hospitalized for several days and nearly died. I got Hep A while I was pregnant with my son from plums grown in Chile. There's a good reason why I eat the way I do.

I think it comes from Genesis, be fruitful and multiply, but I would say that anyone who looks around can tell that we have fulfilled that command extremely well already.

Or maybe we could convince people to stop having litters of children. But that would fly in the face of superstitious religious nonsense, eh?

I'll tell you what...you can eat whatever crap you want, and I'll continue eating fresh/local. I suspect more people will join me, in the future.

Superstitious religious nonsense? Love tolerant lefties... I happen to be a Catholic and have two children... or is that too many for you? Generally speaking, developed countries have lower birthrates, regardless if they have religious populations or not. The country I live in has one of the lowest if not THE lowest birthrate in the world ... and people are pretty religious here.

Most people can't AFFORD to join you and if more and more people do, the global food crisis will simply become more acute. I strongly favor government oversight of the food industry, but we need MORE efficient food production, NOT less...

I think she was referring to people like this.

I have only once gotten food poisoning -- while travelling in South America on a soccer tour as a teenager... even in my two years in China I didn't get food poisoning... I have an iron stomach...

You make it sound like it is only Christians... do you know why China has such a population crisis?!?!? And hint: it has nothing to do with the Abrahamic faiths...

I guess from this sentence that you've never visited a factory farm to see where your food comes from...For the record, I grew up on a farm where we raised black angus cattle that we ate, so I'm no anti-meat whacko. However, no animal should live in the conditions I've seen on some of those farms.

Neither am I, I abhor Vegetarianism and its hubris as if they would survive a week without society making thier lifestyle possible. That said, I abhor the factory farm just as much. Chicken? I don't think I have purposefully had perdue or tyson in over 10 years....

Bell and evan's or empire Kosher I'll do in a pinch.... But none of that mass slaughtered nonsense soaking in a vat of bleach.

Not a fan of cooked oysters..... I think gulf oysters are average at best. about on par with our local jersey flats that we get around here... Give me a wellfleet or a totten virginica any day of the week.

<------ Oysters, clams, blueberries, chicken, beef, I had Ciguatera which was misdiagnosed as MS... FOrtunatley I knew better than the doctor....

Its what each of us have to decide for ourselves as "Acceptable risk"... I for one have cut out almost all processed foods from my family's diet. If I wan't ham, I buy fresh and from a local farm.

I do what I can as well. Very few "pre-Made" anything anymore. With a few exceptions, like Johnsonville Beer Brats... cause I've yet to find an alternative that tastes as good Mesquite grilled ;)

well, i have to say, i'm a big fan of smoked oysters.

And we would have an even worse global food problem than we already do...

Maybe... or maybe not. There is so much waste here in NA, it's downright disgusting. But we do have some major problems to solve in the future, and one of them is over-population population. We are far too many to substantiate, especially with the growing issues of pollution, climate change and depletion of our agriculture soils.

I have hardly any processed foods in my place. I used to buy salsa, beans, and the like. But now I only keep a couple cans for "emergencies" and I buy all my beans dried. No instant rice, etc. I'm working on my herb garden so I can always have fresh herbs. I have cinnamon sticks to even grind my own cinnamon. ;) The only processed meats I have is bacon. I make my own salsa, going to start making my own mayo, pickles, relish, jams, etc. (I just need to learn how to start canning - working on that)

This is my only "bad" spot. The farmers I get my meat from only sell whole chickens. A whole chicken really does me no good, it would be a huge waste of chicken. I don't care for anything but the breast. So, I buy frozen, boneless chicken breasts at the grocery store. I can't really think of any way around that except to not have chicken at all.

This is right on the heels of the egg recall, which begs the question: Do we continue with business as usual, or do we need more robust regulation when it comes to the processing of foods? Note that in both cases the companies have voluntarily pulled the product without the government ordering them to.

Discussion?

Article is here.

When you pull up to any or all meat processing facilities, there is a special little parking space for the FDA food inspector.

They're doing enough, a food recall here and there just means that we're human and can't possibly expect perfection out of this world.

Salsa?

Home made is sooo much better. ;)

Hack it up, freeze the other parts and donate them to a soup kitchen. You probably will still pay the same or less per lb.

Have you and your honey ever done a CSA? We're doing one this fall, I'm tres excited. :)

Local Harvest / Farmers Markets / Family Farms / CSA / Organic Food

As far as oysters go, the fat, succulently briny/juicy flavor of an Appalachicola oyster is sheer heaven. Having them shucked, fresh, right in front of you by young hotties for $.25 per oyster rocks, too.

Indeed, that's why I make my own now.

No can do. It's given to me frozen.

Thaw it, roast it, and use the chicken breasts as you see fit, then use the other parts for stock, soups & stews. I love a chicken carcass!

I don't understand people who say organic farming is not going to sustain the world yet turn around and say they buy local meat. The meat industries also have a big demand to fill, so isn't supporting local meat contributing to the very problem that you claim organic farming causes? I mean, if you compare huge meat factories to small time cattle ranchers, there is no comparison in terms of productivity. Just playing devil's advocate here. I actually support local.

Also, in response to people to say there are upcoming food shortages worldwide and that we need industrial farming to sustain us, I would say oh well. It was the green revolution that made the world's population swell to the numbers it's already at. More food equals more breeding. It would be awful in the short term to see so many people die, but it's only delaying the inevitable by looking for ways to mass produce food even more. The world's population will get bigger and then will crash anyway. Industrial farming is breeding antibiotic resistant disease and ecological catastrophe. We can't covert our entire nations to food production and even if we could it would just do us in.

Part of sustainability unfortunately means sustainable populations. It is simply a law of nature that some of us are going to have to die out before a natural equilibrium is established again.
