Should Videotaping the Police Really Be a Crime?

It should absolutely be legal to videotape police when they're on the job in public. There is no expectation of privacy in that situation.

Yeah cops love their special privileges, and for every 10 good cops you have at least 1 that thinks they are the pimp and the law is the bitch. I say they should definitely be videotaped.

Thanks for bringing this thread into a bitching and crying fest about how you don't like the police.

No problem, just figured I would add some other then "I concur I concur as well, I agree with that guy." I agree with all of you, but cops definately have a pretty sweet deal...at least the ones where crime is a non-issue thing and the most they do in a month has to do with traffic stops. I know in more dangerous cities they have a tough job, like say Cincinnati, OH an hour from me but where I am in Brooksville, KY? It's like the Andy Griffith Show.

Well, that's just about EGZAKLY what the Maryland Attorney General said about this case. "The Maryland Attorney General has released an opinion advising a state legislator that, contrary to the claims of Harford County State’s Attorney Joseph Cassilly, a traffic stop is probably not an instance where a police officer can claim a reasonable expectation of privacy." Maryland Attorney General Sides with Anthony Graber | Cato @ Liberty

HOWEVER, the trial is still going forward in October. Whaaaat???????!!!!!!

Without actually going forward with the case and bringing it before a judge they can't set a judicial precedence for the law being unconstitutional. Have to run it through the courts and let a judge set a precedence for this law being bad this way it becomes official.

It doesn’t seem to be a problem in Sweden.

Absolutely not. The police can and should be video taped all the time. Who polices the police? The rest of us. There has to be a check on that power. But some places seem to not like it so much when their indiscretions are caught on tape. And in this particular case have tried to enforce a law that is obviously not being applied correctly. I would go so far as to say the police and DA who try to arrest people and try them for this crime should all be fired and barred from ever again holding a position of public office or duty.

I am as conservative as they come, with TWO family members in law enforcement, and there is no way on this earth that it can possibly be argued that unless the cops are undercover and risk danger, like in a drug buy scenario, that it should be anything but legal to videotape people on the public payroll.

The attorney general Shipley in that video will be receiving a phone call from my office, and i will even donate to an org I totally despise, the ACLU, to fund an operation attacking any state or municipality with laws akin to MDs.

It's totally unfair that a private citizen should bear the cost of a trial on such an obviously bogus charge. The tape clearly shows a guy in street clothes leaping out of a car with a gun in his hand. He's lucky the guy on the bike didn't gun it and run him over trying to save his own life.

Everything about this case just stinks to high heaven.

Yeah and two of my cop buddies just got shot last week. You're welcome to your opinion but I know better. These guys work their ass off for a thankless job, shamefully underpaid, and have to put up with the ungrateful receipents of their unselfish efforts, such as yourself, all the while holding their tongue.

There are a LOT sweeter deals out there to be had.

They're on the job; they're public servants.
Their job is to serve the public. They are ultimately accountable to the public.
It never has and never will be a violation of anything, for an employer to videotape his or her employees on the job in a public place in order to ensure that they're doing their jobs properly.

They videotape everybody else with their dashboard cams.
It's ridiculous to say, "I can videotape you during our encounter, but it's against the law for you to videotape me."

Wow... my gaydar just hit the ceiling. Plus that cop was kind of hot :)

Why are Europeans so much cooler than North Americans?

It's interesting that wire tapping laws are cited with video taping police, when in those same laws it requires all parties to be notified that they are being phone tapped in order to give them the opportunity to place their own recording devices for the sake of consistent evidence. This of course doesn't count for discreet investigations, and then it requires a warrant.

Are police obtaining a warrant everytime they video tape me from their cop car? I didn't think so. They're out in public, and they serve the public.

****, with the kind of agreement on this issue demonstrated in this thread, we ought to take it to the next level and form an advocacy group and go public.

HAHAHAHA.... Reminds me of some **** we did once when the news showed up at a minor crash scene with no injuries for some reason....

I think this fellow doesn't know much about what he speaks.

The Officer Down Memorial Page, Inc. (ODMP)

Wow wow, look at all the small town police officers getting killed in the line of duty.

But didn't the know it all JohnWOlin tell us this just doesn't happen?

I know man. I almost didn't even respond to him it was so rediculous. But when people dis our troops or our cops, they get sideways with me. I get baited in everytime.

Good news is, both of my bud's are gonna be alright.

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (WTAQ) - A 23-year-old man accused of shooting two West Allis police officers is in critical condition.

The incident Saturday morning started as the officers tried to stop a driver who had run a red light. When the car drove away, those officers followed department policy and didn't chase it, but they found the vehicle later. When they tried to arrest the suspect, he opened fire, wounding both officers as they fired back.

Both officers and the suspect were taken to a nearby hospital. The officers injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The arrested man is said to be a felon who is wanted for a parole violation. He has a history of criminal offenses. http://www.wtaq.com/news/articles/2010/aug/08/man-accused-shooting-west-allis-cops-critically-in/

Be careful out there Caine. When you least expect it, there you are. You and your brotherhood are always in my prayers.

Don't we all assume we are being video taped whenever we are out on the street?

Does the law cover surveilance cameras that are on every building and on every corner?

How could this guy and his camera be any different than any other camera on the street taping the same movements?
