"SEOUL — North Korea warned Saturday that it will respond with "powerful nuclear deterrence" to joint U.S. and South Korean military exercises poised to begin this weekend, saying the drills amount to a provocation that cannot be ignored."

"On Saturday, North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission — headed by leader Kim Jong Il — backed that threat up by promising a "retaliatory sacred war" against South Korea and the U.S. for what it called a second "unpardonable" provocation after wrongly accusing the North in the Cheonan incident."

"The army and people of the (North) will legitimately counter with their powerful nuclear deterrence the largest-ever nuclear war exercises," the commission said in a statement carried by the country's official Korean Central News Agency."

Bring it on, shorty.

I, for one, am terrified. Really.

There is hope, however!

All we'd have to do to get the North Koreans to lay down their arms is offer to feed them.

Very poorly for all involved. Pretty much the reason it hasn't happened already.

Will the U.S. ignore the drills (NK response) or escalate the situation?

I think if North Korea is threatening nuclear attacks we should do a preemptive strike against them. I believe a nation with such an abhorrent and irrational leader will use a nuke anyway somewhere down the road. I don't think we should act gung ho and instigate a nuclear conflict, but I do think we should strategically find a way to disable their nukes and overthrow the North Korean communist regime.

Nuh-uh.

I don't want the US anywhere near that mess of a country.

If you think we have it bad in Afghanistan, just think of how bad we'd have it in a nation where we were directly responsible for the toppling of the national cult of personality.

No, thanks.

I think China would get involved and support N Korea like they continue to do

I'm not so sure China would support North Korea creating a nuclear war though. If China is in the mix I'm sure Japan would also lend their aid (even though socially the Japanese and South Koreans tend to hate each other).

At any rate, joking aside, here's how this is going to go.

The United States and South Korea will conduct their excercises as planned.

Afterwards, the North Korean news will be ablaze with reports of how the aggressors stayed away from territorial waters, how the DMZ was dead silent, and how the show of military might plainly avoided any signs of turning into an incursion.

Then they'll trumpet how the might of the North Korean people terrified the imperialists, and life will go on as normal.

Depends on China's pact with Russia and their past goal of creating a globally geographically strategic alliance with Brazil, etc.

Chances are this is exactly what will happen...

How do you predict it will turn out?

Frankly I expect Kim Jong Mentally-Ill to rant and rave and otherwise do very little. Maybe pop off another test-nuke, or shoot a No-Dong missle off to annoy the Japanese. He might go so far as to sink another SKorean ship if he can sneak up on one.

NK has saber-rattling down to an art. Well, actually more like fingerpainting for preschoolers than art. It would be comical if it wasn't so serious.

In reality it would be very unwise of them to actually use nuclear weapons. They probably have only a few; there is no evidence that they have a nuke they could actually mount on a ballistic missle. They could only lose a nuclear exchange.

OTOH the conventional military situation isn't so great. The army of the ROK is big, tough, well-equipped and far more formidable, but if I am informed correctly the North has massed large units of artillery at the border, within range of Seoul, and claims that they could annihilate the capital city within minutes if they so chose.

NK would be just a sad joke if it wasn't for all the poor NKoreans living on the edge of starvation so Kim Jong Mentally-Ill can have a big army, missles and some piss-poor-grade nukes, and the South Koreans that have to put up with having his finger perpetually in their eye.

Actually warring with NK would be bad, because Kim Jong Mentally-Ill could probably get a lot of his own people (and a lot of SK's) killed in the process, but ultimately it would turn out the worst for Kim Jong himself.

Yeah that idea is ****ing insane.

More like plastic spork rattling, I'd say.

People in this country need to find something else to be patriotic about besides war. It will be the destruction of this country.

So what would make it any different to Iraq?
