BP says new cap has stopped flow of oil into the Gulf

Re: BP says oil has stopped leaking

After this test is over and assuming BP has managed to obtain favourable results, they next have to locate a pipe with a Diameter of 7" located some 190080" away and drill into that 7" pipe.
By all means hope and pray, but please do not assume that having a temporary cap on this well is the be all and end all, because it is not.

I can think of several whys. heres a few..

1) karma
2) It's their oil. heck it's even got their name on it. so I figure it belongs on Britain's beaches rather than mine.
3) my inner-evil-genius thought it'd be fun watching 007 try to stop ginormous oil slicks heading for the isles.

Even were any of the slicks to get out into the Atlantic they would inevitably be broken up by the frequent storms in that ocean well before the Gulf stream might deposit them on British beaches.
Incidentally in order to get to the Atlantic the slicks would have to pass through the straits of Florida, which might not be overly good for the everglades.

If this all works we could actually survive this disaster. I was waiting for them to say that we needed to evacuate.

Even with a worst case scenario they would not issue that order until more than a few hundred citizens died.

Certainly good news.

Will be interesting to see if this warrants a Presidential news conference in the next few days. The White House took an amount of political grief over this spill (mostly undeserved i'd say) Would suspect they would like have their name associated to the "good news" now after spending 10 weeks being linked to the bad.

(just having a passing political thought here. I'll be quiet now.....:nails)

.

True they did receive unfavorable publicity but this was mainly because the Obama administration took such a long time to get their act together and do something.
The ones who deserve any praise that may now be deserving are those Scientists and Engineers & Physicists who have in a very short time been able to learn how to deal with Deep Water leaks and design and build the machinery required so as to be able to tame such.
Obama might receive some praise for EVENTUALLY ALLOWING foreign ships to enter the Gulf into American waters, but even there, he took too damn long.

Their intent was NEVER to plug the hole for daddy...it was to reconfigure it so they could continue to draw oil.

In part yes, but in order to plug the well permanently they require the well to continue to spill oil.
You see, what they intend doing is to inject MUD and then Cement into the pipe BELOW the sea bed, this is known as 'Bottom Kill', what they do is hope that the pressure from the field will draw the injected MUD first up into the WELL bore that leads to the Blowout preventer that failed, they need the New WELL CAP to be open to get the required movement up of the injected material. They tried earlier to inject MUD and other rubbish down into the WELL, that idea failed but was called the 'Top Kill' method.

I can read too...now...how much do you want to bet they are back to normal ops in 6 months once they well is 'capped'?

Blatantly stolen from another forum, but if we're looking to finalize who is held responsible:

Re: BP says oil has stopped leaking

It's good news.

Not only is it plugged temporarily but my share price went up by almost $3.

Expect that to fall when they start the investigation.

Been home to BP. 'Nuff said.

It was home to British Petroleum, not BP, which was formed from their merger with................................. AMOCO! I wonder if Indiana would benefit from an oil slick?

Re: BP says oil has stopped leaking

Expect that to fall when they start the investigation.

When it does, Exxon/Mobile will buy them out.

Then who ya gonna blame?

Finally, this nightmare is over.......

Or is it?

Discussion?

Article is here.

I had heard this is only a temporary solution, though.
Hopefully they can get something permanent in place soon.
I was at the coast this past week; Texas coast is looking beautiful as always.
The oil never made it here.

Re: BP says oil has stopped leaking

That people that were in charge at the time.......

The driller, the toolpusher and the company man? Two of those guys are dead. That don't leave you with much.

Correction: All three drillers died, along with the toolpusher and both mud engineers.

Re: BP says oil has stopped leaking

The kids and I spent the week in NOLA. There were shortages of oysters in some of the restaurants, though others seemed to have access to some from farther west. On the way home, we stopped by Pensacola Beach, just to see what we could see. There were at least 1,000 BP employees there engaged in cleanup, and perhaps a 3rd of the beach was restricted from the public. You simply could not get close to where the BP employees are working to see how bad the damage is. Apparently, it is now a crime to set foot on the areas where the cleanup is occurring, and BP has designated those areas.

When, in the history of the U.S., have we allowed a private company to dictate those kinds of terms for cleaning up a mess they made?

The oil is clearly visible in Mobile Bay, you can see large mats of oil floating in the water. It's gross.

Pensacola has a strong odor of petroleum in and around Pensacola Bay. They are saying that the areas farther east will be closed in the next week or so.

Unbelievably, people were allowing their children to swim in the water, even though it was clearly marked as contaminated by the spill.

Yep, been a couple of people arrested in Louisiana for that already.

That bugs me as well.

It seems like we've placed the power over this entire debacle in the hands of a multinational corporation. It seems...anti-American.

In charge

Are those people in charge.... nope?

Then stop once again stop changing the subject. We hold leaders accountable for the failures of their companies don't we? You know heinous safety violations?

Then why are they drilling relief a well to kill it? Plus why would they be using ships that suck up the oil and then BURN it at the surface???

Nice try.

It's the oddest damned thing I've ever seen. Fed agents can detain or arrest anyone, including state employees of Fl, La., Al., etc. and anyone else not contracted by BP for "interfering" with the cleanup, yet somehow it's only BP cleanup zones. I don't know what the hell is going on and don't even have the nerve to speculate.

Don't fall for the lines. They want that thing to produce again, but right now they want the wellhead to equalize so they can stop the flow to minimize damage. I wouldn't be surprised if in about 1.5 years that wellhead were to be tapped again.

If the well is safe to drill in 1.5 years and there is no ban on deep water drilling then its fine. The well itself had no problems it was a lack of safety issues with BP. If these issues are addressed then beginning to drill the well again is fine. Besides, they already tried other solutions that would have rendered the well incapable. These are points that also make his post incorrect.

This still doesn't stop the fact that his post's intentions were that BP was rigging some sort of system to continue to drill the well when in fact this is not true at all. What happens 1.5 years from now is irrelevant.
