Russia: Iran close to nuke capability

Medvedev statement comes after Teheran-Moscow spat on UN sanctions.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Monday that Iran was approaching the point at which it would be able to make nuclear weapons, Reuters reported.

During a meeting of international ambassadors in Moscow, Medvedev said "Iran is moving closer to possessing the potential which in principle could be used for the creation of nuclear weapons."

The statement was a rare public admission by the Kremlin that Iran may have the intention of building a nuclear weapon. Reuters said the statement came after an argument with Iran over Russia's support of sanctions against Iran.

Well, the cat's out of the bag - and let's hope the 3 US battle carrier groups outside iran will be used to do what should have been some 10 years ago: destroy this cancerous regime and wipe it and its defenders from the face of the map.

It's going to be interesting to see how Russia plays Iran in the future.

Hmm - I don't know about this info.
How can *one* country admit the actions of another country?

I mean - I know about the info - but how can Russia just stand up and declare this on Iran's behalf? What else is really going on? Is this a "hey! look over there! A rabbit!" moment?

... END OF THE WORLD, I tells ya.

Misleading thread title

Russia said Iran is nearly the point at which it could build a nuclear weapon, not that it is

Erm, sorry, but look at what he said:

Medvedev said:

Nowhere did he say "Iran is building nuclear weapons". In fact, it has been pretty common knowledge for years that Iran is "moving closer to possessing the potential which in principle could be used for the creation of nuclear weapons."

This is hype.

Russia would have much better info themselves on it and are playing a political move to separate themselves from Iran as it develops nuclear capabilities it doesn't really desire it to have. Who do you think designed their nuclear technology. I dont know absolutely for sure. But these def. arent american designed nuclear enrichment plants.

Exactly it is completely politically motivated.

They are constructing an Iranian nuclear facility and have benefited politically from the United States' inability to counter their other geopolitical moves. Our distraction has been their benefit.

IMO, President Medvedev was talking about Iran's getting close to having the technical expertise and knowledge necessary to construct a nuclear weapon. He was not stating that Iran was getting close to developing a nuclear weapon. He stated, "Iran is moving closer to possessing the potential which in principle could be used for the creation of nuclear weapons." If he meant to say that Iran was getting close to developing a nuclear device, he would have stated that Iran was getting close to creating nuclear weapons or something along those lines. Instead, he referred to "the potential which in principle could be used" to develop nuclear weapons. Nevertheless, one should not minimize the significance of what the Russian President was suggesting, because possession of the requisite knowledge/technical expertise is almost all of what is required to provide a country with a nuclear weapons capability.
