Gay Workers Will Get Time to Care for Partner?s Sick Child - NYTimes.com

It seems that homosexuality is a hot topic at DP lately, so at the risk of adding fuel to the fire, here is another story.

WASHINGTON — President Obama will soon expand the rights of gay workers by allowing them to take family and medical leave to care for sick or newborn children of same-sex partners, administration officials said Monday. The policy will be set forth in a ruling to be issued Wednesday by the Labor Department’s wage and hour division, the officials said.

Under a 1993 law, people who work for a company with 50 or more employees are generally entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a newborn or for a spouse, son or daughter with “a serious health condition.” The new ruling indicates that an employee in a same-sex relationship can qualify for leave to care for the child of his or her partner, even if the worker has not legally adopted the child.

The ruling, in a formal opinion letter, tackles a question not explicitly addressed in the 1993 law. It is one of many actions taken by the Obama administration to respond to the concerns of gay men and lesbians within the constraints of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman as husband and wife.

...

Federal law does not recognize same-sex relationships. But Labor Department lawyers have concluded that people in such relationships may nevertheless qualify for family and medical leave when they act as parents, sharing the care and support of a child.

So what do you think, good idea or a bad one?

I agree - you don't have to have marriage or blood ties to a child in order to be their provider and caregiver . . . and they get sick, they're kids - there you go.

common sense.

Looks like a good thing to me.

Sounds like a good thing and focuses on the key component in the GM debate, IMO: children and family.

I support this and think it's a good idea.

I'm not a fan of administrative law-making in general, but this is a pretty good use of it.

I think everyone can agree that this is a good idea.

So that joke went over your head too.

That's our Tex.

Ah crap, you're right sorry.

Oh SH&T

WTF is going on in this thread? Where's the Partisan Hackery?

WTF! Is the World Ending Tommorow?

BTW props Obama!

this isn't right, everyone's agreeing on something, if i don't put a stop to this, we'll be seeing 4 flying horsemen by tomorrow afternoon.

I'm against it, because...errm.....it'll contribute to the moral decline of society, and errm.....geihs are teh badness.....and buttseks......yeah, and something to do with islam, and global warming

Oim rite wif you'ze Spud :) We'fe gotta stop em fag... gots.

I don't think it's any of the governments business, so i remain against it.

I do, however, commend businesses who adopt such a policy.

I think rather that this is a rather fractured position by Obama, on one hand he stated in order to get elected that he believes a marriage is between a man and a woman, on the other he uses federal power to dictate to the states....

What? This isn't about marriage.

I'll start the popcorn, you get the sodas Tex.

Yeah, this seems like a no brainer. Someone needs to be there for the child, whether it be his mother, father, or even second father.
