Most of the country's attention is understandably focused on the Gulf oil spill given the magnitude of the disaster. However, few know about a much smaller oil spill in Salt Lake City, Utah which is being referred to as a "devastating situation" by Governor Gary Herbert (R).

Unlike the BP oil spill in the Gulf, the Utah spill was caused by a pipeline onshore owned by Chevron. The pipeline spewed out oil at a rate of 50 gallons per minute before being discovered and shut off by Chevron. The Utah spill has already affected a six mile area, including over 150 birds. Officials are concerned the oil may reach more rivers and streams in the state doing more damage.

Ug when will it end. I'm wondering about our infrastructure falling apart.

It will be interesting to know how this Pipeline failed.
The reason why the majority of Pipeline failures occur is because of Corrosion, either internal or external.
Either way, Corrosion or the onset of corrosion can be detected
Other reasons for Pipeline failure might be external damage caused by Machines or Explosives.
A recent case in Texas was where a Contractors crew were drilling the ground preparatory to erecting utility poles, unfortunately a crew drilled a Gas Pipe.
In some Instances Ground movement can cause a pipe to bend or in extreme instances crack.
Earthquakes can cause this type of damage.
Pipelines can be deliberately drilled, I somehow doubt this would be the cause in this instance.
